Tradebusyat new Primrose development

A NEW petrol station and conven ience store in Clitheroe lias been well received by local people. :.

■ The first few \yeeks’ trading at the redeveloped Primrose Garage site in

: Whalley Road have been very busy and encouraging for its owners, the

■Kay Group, who invested heavily in the site. - : ,

It now has a Texaco filling station,

a large and well-stocked Londis con venience store and a Subway fast food outlet, all reporting good business.

An aggressive fuel pricing polic}', in cluding a customer loyalty scheme, has

. seen fuel prices consistently among the .lowest in the UK in an area which in the past has been criticised for its liigh prices, say its owners.

The Subway store lias also proved

a popular addition, while sales con tinue to grow at the Londis store, both = from passing trade and residents in the Whalley Road area. Ken Kay, of the Kay Group, com- •

mented: “Trading has generally been buoyant and above expectation, and .

• so many of tlie customers have gone out of their way to thank us for finally ■ bringing competitive fuel pricing to : Clitheroe. “They are also thrilled with the new

Subway, which really struggled to cope with the amount of business in its first week of operation..”

exploited five teenage girls

A CLITHEROE man lias’been found guilty o f grooming and sexually ex ploiting five children following a nine day trial at Preston Crown Court

. Edwin Dillon, (23), of Nelson Street, Clitheroe, was convicted of 10 charges of engaging in sexual activity with five differ

ent girls aged between 13 and 15. .' Dillon was arrested on January 12th af

ter a lengthy investigation by the Engage

team. His offences started in August, 2008, and continued until October, 2009. ■ PC David Dutton, from Lancashire

Constabulary’s Operation Engage team, said: “This has been a long and complex investigation and I am delighted with the verdict, which should send a strong mes sage that this type of predatory crime will not be tolerated. “Dillon took advantage of young and

vulnerable children until they became infatuated with him and he then sexually exploited them.

. “The victims in this case have shown tremendous courage in coming forward and giving evidence at court. “I would like to reassure local people

that we will continue to target those sus pected of sexually exploiting children and

I urge anyone with concerns to contact us.” .

■ ■ Chris Thayne, Blackburn with Danven

Council’s executive member for children’s services, said: “Sexual e.\ploitation not only ruins the lives of the children and young people;.the effects on the whole family are devastating. “To date this is the biggest case the

Engage team lias dealt witlilince the pio neering unit was established two years ago to tackle child sexual exploitation in the borough. “This has been an excellent example of true partnership working at its very best.

.The team has been instrumental in help ing these young people to pursue prosecu tions whilst coming to terms with what has

' happened to them and helping them to move on with their lives. ; “So in congratulating the Engage team,

this is also an opportunity to commend these young girls for their bravery in sup porting this case.- ’■ “Even after their ordeals they have been

able to testify against their abuser in court. This is not easy and can often be the main obstacles often faced wlien trying to bring prosecutions in cases of child sexual ex ploitation. • . “I hope this conviction will make peo ple more aware of sexual exploitation and

help towards preventing this from happen ing to other vulnerable young girls.’/’ > ’ Paul Wilcox, assistant director for chil

dren’s services for Barnardo’s, which is part of the multi-agency Engage team, added: “Barnardo’s has been working-., closely with the young people involved in ^ this case. “We commend them for showing out

standing bravery and for testifying in court and will continue to support them and en sure their safety and well-being.”.'■ ■: -. ■ ■ The court remanded Dillon in custody until he is sentenced, which is due to be on October 14th.
