ON PARADE: Young handlers with their livestock in the main ring, (s)
fk by Julie Magee
DESPITE the wet weather, this year’s 66th Hodder Val ley Show, proved no damp squib. Although attendance num
bers were slightly down on last year’s show, which was blessed with bright sunshine, show president David Carlton said he had been pleasantly sur prised by the number of people who went along. “It was great that we man
aged to get such a good crowd of people to the show, con sidering the way the weather had been for the two previous days,” said Mr Carlton. “It was quite wet under foot,
but the weather on the day was quite good, with sunny spells.” “At Hodder Valley there’s
always a really nice homely atmosphere and it manages to remain quite traditional,” added Mr Carlton. “It always offers something
different too and because it changes location every year, this keeps the show fresh.” Mr Carlton, who normally
runs the show’s sheep dog tri als, was privileged to judge the show’s many stalls. After much deliberation
he judged the best stall in the food hall to be Chocolori and the best craft stall as Fisher Forestry. “I was really impressed with
the exhibits and with the food tent where there was a lot of
real quality produce and lots of people were buying and tasting the free samples,” he said. Mr Carlton, a semi-retired
farmer from Newton who was at the show with his wife Bess, added: “We had a very good show of trade stands too, which makes a big difference to the revenue brought in.” This year’s show was held
at Boarsden Farm, between Newton and Dunsop Bridge. Alongside all the usual sheep, cattle, heavy horse entries and sheep dog trials, there were around 20 craft stalls and trade stands. The crowds were wowed
with displays by the Jez Avery Mountain Bike Stunt Show
and the Matthew AIpe Motor cycle Stunt Show. Ribble Valley teenager Tim
Ankers, who was runner-up on BBC’s Junior Apprentice hit TV show, also supported the event and manned a stall for Bowland Stoves, which recent ly opened a new showroom in Poorsland Barn, Slaidburn. Other attractions included a
vintage tractor display, a horse plaiting demonstration in the main ring, a display from the Airedale Beagles, fell racing, sheep shearing, egg catching and tug o’ war competitions. A real family day out, all the
attractions took place to a back drop of music by Slaidburn Sil ver Band.
