Maroon and Gold are up and running

CLITHEROE gained their first competitive win of the season at Aldwinians, with a tenacious performance. Tlie hosts scored first as,

from a turnover, they barrelled down the pitch to touch down. From the restart, Clitheroe

pushed into opposition ter ritory where an Aldwinians indiscretion at the breakdown allowed Kino to slot an easy three points. As the half wore on,

Aldwinians who pressed and pressed, eventually scoring near the posts to move their advantage to 12-3. Again from the restart

Clitheroe pressed, and after some great support play. Chambermaid drew the defence and slipped the ball to Jim Smith, who went over for his inaugural first XV tty. The conversion just faded

and Clitheroe trailed 12-8 at the turn round. In the second half, Clitheroe

started to gain some cleaner ball up front, with the back line looking dangerous, however, the referee spotted something on the floor at the ruck and awarded Aldwinians a penalty to move the score to 15-S. At times in the past this

might have been a killer blow, but the Maroon and Gold responded, and after the for wards gained possession in midfield, Watson at scrum half fed the ball to Peel, and on to Railton, who took it over the gain line, before full back Kino joined the line and chipped ahead. His kick was right on

the button and landed in the tiy area, where, following up his own kic,k he touched down for a great score, which he also converted to level at 15-15. Disaster struck with around

15 minutes to go when Slinger, who was having a fantastic game on the open side, left the pitch with a dislocated shoul der, leaving Kino to move onto the flank, and a tremendously sporting gesture from the hosts allowed Gretton back onto the pitch to cover the full back position. Clitheroe moved into the

Aldwinians’ half as the clock ticked down and were awarded a penalty, Cowgill realised the defenders had not retired the required 10 metres and took a quick tap - forcing the referee to march the penalty 10 yards deeper into the Aldwinians half. Ice man Kino stepped up to

slot the three points on offer to cap his man-of-the-match performance and seal victory. Saturday sees the first

play at home for the first time this season, with Leigh the visi tors for a 3 p.m. kick-off. Clitheroe seconds beat

Leigh 4ths 29-12 with tries from Dickinson (2), Penney, Redfeam and Williamson tiy. Unfortunately there is

no second team fixture on Saturday, with their next game at home to Rossendale 3rds at Littlemoor on September 25th.

Revenge proves sweet for Clitheroe

CLITHEROE Tennis Club avenged an 8-0 defeat to Blackburn Northern in last year’s East Lancashire Mbied Cup Final to take the title. Clitheroe captain Mary

Brass fielded a strong team this year, as Roger Ravenscroft partnered

TENNIS

Jennifer Holgate, and Steve Pym partnered Louise Burrill. In the first round of

matches Roger and Jennifer beat Blackburn’s first pair Ian Broughton and Liz

Maskell 6-1,6-4. On the other court, Steve

and Louise won the first set 6-2, only to lose the second, to leave Clitheroe 3-1 up at halfway, and needing only two more sets to win. Roger and Jennifer

won their match against John and Michelle 6-1, 6-

4, and although Steve and Louise struggled against the Blackburn number ones and lost 6-2,6-2, by that time the match was won 5-3. Pictured,

Chatburn on cloud 9!

CHATBURN came away from Skipton with a 9-0 win ob Satur day.

They went ahead on 20 minutes

when a header from Evans sent Holgate through on goal to coolly slot past the keeper. The secong goal wasnt long in

coming, and a Hodges corner was met by Dolan. Hodges then got on the

scoresheet himself when he drilled home the third. Chatburn were rampant now

and before half-time they scored twice in quick succsesion. The fourth saw Bicknell find

Dolan, who lost his marker to slot in from close range. And the fifth was the best of the

half as Holgate swapped passes with Bicknell before giving the keeper no chance. After the break, Bicknell got the

goals his performance deserved, the first a cool finish after a'clever pass from Holgate, before he smashed a second past the keeper after running onto a header from Evans. Hodges added number eight

when he just got his toe to a long ball by Humphreys, and Dewhurst

rounded off the scoring when he collected the ball 12 yards out and fired an unstopable shot past the keeper. ® Clitheroe RBL beat

Borrowdale 3-1 on Saturday, but made hard work of making it nine points from a possible 12. After creating and squandering

a host of chances, the deadlock was finally broken on the half hour as Shields hit the bar and Eglin

jinked inside the full back and smashed home from close range. The second half went the same

as the first with Clitheroe passing the ball well and creating chances, and they got a two-goal cusion when Shields latched on to a pass and smashed the ball into the bottom right. However, the locals were

stunned as Borrowdale pulled one back, as a ball over the top was neatly finished by the centre forward, as he rounded keeper Scriven and slotted home past Hall on the line. But the game was finally put to

bed five minutes from time when man-of-the-match Eglin got his second of the game as he slammed the ball home from close range.

FOOTBALL ® A pulsating match at on

Saturday saw Chipping beat Wyre 5-4 to record their first win of the season. Wyre took the lead, but against

the run of play Chipping equal ised. Following some good passing in midfield, Rick Bolton cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable left footer into the bottom corner. The villagers then took the lead

shortly after from the penalty spot. After being taken down in the box, Ben Bristo stepped up and slotted into the bottom corner to make it

2-

1. The visitors reacted well to

going behind and from a comer, a Wyre player rose unopposed to head goalwards, and though Ireland parried, the rebound was smashed home. The game seemed to be drifting

towards half-time level, but more good work from Bolton down the right set Bristo clear, only to be cynically dragged down in the area. Bristo again dusted himself down and left the keeper rooted as he netted his second.

The villagers knew the next

goal was going to be vital and it was Bristo again who provided it, racing clear before coolly grabbing his hat-trick. WjTe pulled a goal back, the

striker alert enough to nod home after Ireland had tipped his initial header onto the cross bar. But man-of-the-match Bristo

raced clear before slotting the ball in from the angle for his fourth. Wyre made it a tense finish

when the lively substitute found the bottom comer, but some stout defending saw Chipping home. The villagers travel to Leyland

Athletic on Saturday in the Guildhall Cup (kick-off 2 p.m.). • Dog Inn slipped to a shock 3-

2 defeat to Helmshore Harriers in their opening game of the season at Hashngden Sports Centre. Dog made the better start and

took the lead when Nick Lord met Ollie Steele’s cross with a stunning volley. Helmshore were level, though,

within minutes and another counter-attack saw them lead at half-time. When Dog equalised with a Mark Lord header early in the

second half, there only looked to be one winner, but a controver sial penalty put Helmshore back in front, before Dog missed a late spot-kick of their own. Dog entertain Ossy Refugees at

Wilson’s on Sunday. • Whalley Juniors U8s won

their first game of the season against Blue Star. Sam Jones scored a penalty

to get things underway before Niall Derbyshire capped a supetb team performance to make it 2- 0. The side then drew 3-3 with OswaldUvistle St Mary’s after a brace from Derbyshire and a strike from Lewis Hamilton. ® Clitheroe Wolves UlOs Reds

went down 2-1 to Mill Hill Reds. Mill Hill took a hvo-goal lead

after the break, and despite an own goal halving the deficit. Wolves couldn’t find an equaliser. Man-of-the-match was Kit Lloyd. Wolves U l ls Red continued

their impressive start to the new season, with back-to-back victories at Highmoor. Against Blue Star, the locals

won 7-0, as Nathan Colman scored another hat-trick, and defender Jack Burgess scored his first goal.

On Sunday morning, Clitheroe

earned a comfortable win over Langho Juniors, with goals from Frankie Jackson (2), Elliot Watson, Nathan Colman, and Charlie Dewhurst and Daniel Holmes. ® Readstone Under 8s Blue

were beaten 4-3 by Barrowford Celtic. Jack Leaver scored a brace with star man Leo Jefferson scor ing the other. The Under 9s Yellow pro

gressed to the second Round of the cup with a 5-1 victory over Barrowford Celtic Blacks. The goal scores w'ere Cade Leonard (2) and man-of-the-match Hariy Burrows with a hat trick The previous week the team

started the league season with a 2-0 victory over Trawden Celtic Black, as Leonard scored both goals with Harry Burrows named star man. The Under 10s Yellow beat

Readstone Reds 4-3 in a veiy close encounter, with both teams contributing to an exciting game of football. The goalscorers were Jack Lofthouse (2), William Wrathall and Ross Birchall, who was named man-of-the-matcL
