BLOOMING FLOWERS: A display of colourful entries in Ciitheroe Garden Club Annual Show.(s)
Great day I Record entries at at garden | colourful show club show
vww.dltheroeadvertiser.co.ul
RECORD numbers of green-fingered people entered the popular Sab-
den Horticultural Show. The colourful festival at
THE main hall o f St James’ CE School was buzzing with activity from early morning as exhibitors arrived with a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, flowers, produce and crafts for the Ciitheroe Garden Club’s annual show,
and visitors were reward ed with an interesting and varied display of produce and crafts. This year there were 84
classes with a total of 300 entries from 56 entrants who included 17 people exhibiting for the first time. The committee had intro duced some new classes including one for art and it was particularly exciting to see the large number of paintings arriving. The morning was a busy
time for the judges Mr G. Porter (flowers and plants); Mr J. Lindsay (vegetables and fruit); Mrs M. Jackson (floral art); Mr K. Geddes (photography), but Mrs E. Moorhouse
probably had the best job sampling and judging the entries in the baking and jam classes. Tc.xtile artist Norah Ball judged entries in the textile class and also the children’s classes. The new class for a
painting attracted 23 en tries and for many of the artists it was their first op portunity to put their work on public display. The paintings were judged by local artist Sue Tattersall, who was very impressed by the high standard of all the entries. Tlie exhibition certainly attracted much
'attention from the many visitors to the show who probably didn’t realise how many talented artists there are in the Ribble Valley. The refreshment room
was very busy as visitors took advantage of the tea and home-made cakes available. There was a good crowd
in the hall too for the prizegiving, conducted this year in splendid fash ion by Mr Paul Adnitt,
headmaster of St James’ School. There were too many prizes to mention every winner, but spe cial mention should go to David Harrison, winner of the RHS Banksian Medal as show champion and George Cowgill, winner of The President’s Award for serv’ices to the club. This year there was a
new award and the first Bill Gregson Award for an went to Frances Cullen. As usual the show fin
ished with an auction of the produce conducted by Pam Entwistle, show sec retary' and club chairman, the proceeds going to the school’s Chrisrmas fund. The organisers would
like to thank all volunteers, exhibitors and judges who contributed to the show, a big thank you to all the visitors who helped make the show such a success and special thanks to Mr Adnitt and the governors of St James’ for allowing the club to use their lovely school.
VISIT THE AREA’S LEADING WEDDING VENUE and
PREMIER WEDDING EXHIBITION
tracted scores of exhibitors from all over East Lanca shire as the show marked its 67th year.
There was a wealth of
flowers, vegetables and handicrafts, bakery, wine and photographs on display at St Mary’s Community Hall, Sabden. But it was Alun Parfitt
and John Hartley who stole the show, winning the silver rose bowl forthe umpteenth time for most points in the members’ section. Mr Parfitt was also hon
