THE term “Big Hitter” is often used to describe any one that has made a success of their chosen career, but it rings even more true for a Kibble Valley drummer who is making his mark with

a classic rock band. “Wishbone Ash”, who were

i

famous in the 1970’s, have al ready played 86 gigs in 16 dif ferent countries this year and will be bringing their set to The Grand in Clitheroe on Wednes day, October 13th. Part of their ongoing popularity is down to their drummer Joe Crabtree who, when not travelling the world with the band, is based in Read. The line up of the rest of the

b.ind is truly global, with the '■inger and lead guitarist based in Connecticut, USA, and the h.issist and second guitarist in London and Finland respec- mely. ____ Educated at Clit heroe Royal Gram mar School, Joe has fond memories of his early musical career with the first

TALENTED: Joe is ready to hit the drums! (s)

band he formed in the school as sembly hall. “From there, I have continued my love of drumming and now do it for a living with a band that my parents listened to when they were at school them selves!” Joe’s advice to any up-and-

coming musicians from the Ribble Valley is simple: “I went through all the traditional chan nels of contacting agents and trying to get my name out there, but in the end, the best advice I can give is that you really need to network properly by being pro fessional and likeable. If you get the chance to work with musi: dans, they will always remember you first for your personality, so make sure you make the right impression so they will want to work with you again and recom mend you to others.”

The band’s links to the Ribble

Valley were forged after Joe visi- tied The Grand in Clitheroe last year for a drum recording session in their state of the art studio. Having last visited in its previous life as a cinema, he was so bowled over by the transformation of the venue that he invited the band there for rehearsals on their next trip to the UK. His band mates were so impressed that the live recording of their next album and DVD will be recorded there. “I think it’s fantastic that we can do these things so professionally and at the same time, so close to home” says Joe. “It’s so strange how things turn out!” Tickets are available now from

the booking office at The Grand, for further information go to wvw.wishboneash.com or www. joecrabtree.com

Get set for the tango

BARRICA Wines, at Huntleys Farm, Samlesbuty, has a reputa tion for staging some fabulous wine extravaganzas. On Saturday, September 18th, their Argentine an dinner and wine tasting looks set to be the best yet, with an e.\- pert Argentinean wine maker and two tango dancers flying all the way from Argentina just to host the evening. Mauricio Lorca, one of the

finest winemakers in Argentina, is coming all the way to host the dinner and wine tasting - and he is bringing two authentic Argen tinean tango dancers with him to ensure that the night has a truly South American theme. Jane Cuthbertson, owner of

Barrica Wines, who won the con verted title of Independent Wine Retailer of the Year 2010, visited Argentina on a wine buying trip in February as part of her prize. She said: “When I visited Argentina I was blown away by the quality of some of their wines and Mauricio Lorca is making some of the best Argentinean wine there is. I am delighted and truly honoured that he is coming all this way to visit us and I am very excited that he is bringing tango dancers. The tango was a lasting and very evocative impression I took away from Ar gentina and I can’t wait to share the experience with a Lancastrian audience! This is going to be a fabulous night.” Tickets are £40 per person for

a four course dinner, wines, Mau- ricio’s expert knowledge and the tango dancers. Available from Barrica Wines shop at Huntleys or on 01772 877933.
