: Big Dave’s big day
A BULLOCK aptly named “Big Dave” put Kibble Valley farmer ■ Ian Townson among the prizewin ners at the prestigious 2009 North ern Limousin Extravaganza. Staged at Skipton Auction Mart,
the show attracted the cream of the crop of Limousin cattle from across the North. Ian, who farms at Lower Thorneyholme, Dunsop Bridge, took the reserve commercial cham pion title with !‘Big Dave”, who was also the first prize Limousin- sired bullock, sired by the more grandly titled Broomfield Regency.
Organised jointly by Craven Cat
tle Marts and the North East Lim ousin Breeders Club, the Northern
: Limousin Extravaganza provided an opportunity for breeders to exhibit 2008-h6rn juvenile Limou- sins, most entering the show ring for the first time. More than 40 up-and-coming
Limousins competed for a total^ prize fund of more than £2,000. Our picture shows Ian Townson

Ramblers take long way round
SIXTEEN members and friends of Clitheroe Ram blers completed the Clitheroe 60k walk, while 11 more completed at least one section of the route. The Clitheroe 60K walk'
is a very scenic and chal lenging long-distance circu lar walk over Longridge Fell, Pendle Hill and skirt ing Grindleton Fell, includ ing nearly 5,000ft. of ascent, a similar, height gain to that of the Yorkshire,Dales’ three peaks walk. Saturday was glorious for
.the first leg , an undulating route of ups and downs. There was some gain in height from Higher Hodder Bridge, up to Kemple End, almost all of which was lost on the descent to Greengore.;
The main climb of the
day led through forest and moorland to the summit of Spire Hill, the. highest point on Longridge Fell. This is one of the finest view points in the Ribble Valley. Then downhill, past
Bradley Hall, Carr Side Farm, over the stepping stones at Bailey Hippings and along the banks of the River Loud: to Loud Mytham Bridge. The good weather contin
ued on the second day as the Hodder Valley was followed' to Newton, with a couple of easy climbs over New Laund Hill and.Hodder Bank Fell. Easington Brook was
then followed past Harrop Lodge to the picturesque
hamlet of Harrop Fold. From here an ascent was made across access land to the forestry plantation on Grindleton Fell and along Shivering Ginnel to reach the summit of Beacon Hill, a fine viewpoint with the backdrop of Pendle and the welcome sight of Sawley in the valley bottom, the end of the 15-mile walk. On the final day, the
weather took a turn for the worse. The rain set in as the walkers started the climb up into the mist on the lower slopes of Pendle. "rhe summit plateau of
Pendle can be a confusing place in bad weather and care had to be taken to keep the group together. After passing the Ordnance Sur
vey trig point, there was no let-up in the conditions over Black Hill and Apronful Hill, but the party finally emerged out of the.mist, if not the rain, on to Pendle Road at the "Wellspring’s Hotel. Those who had’completed
the whole of the 60k walk received a c er t if ica te of achievement from the walk leader, Ben Brown. The Clitheroe 60k was
devised by Eddie Ross of Clitheroe Ramblers. Route cards and c e r t if ica tes of achievement are available from Clitheroe Information Centre and Clitheroe Inter change.
