m s » , Our country, let us decide
Like most English people, I am a demo crat and feel uncomfortable about the
F fere.
European Union. If our own Parliament wants to reintro
duce hanging for mass murder, I do not think it is any business of Estonia to inter
If we want to nationalise the banks, it ' . . .
is not for the French to control the process. The Germans have no business telling us whether or not we should import lamb from New Zealand and it is nothing
.to do with the Hungarians whether we should privatise the Post Office. Neither is there any reason why Italians should decide how many hours we are allowed to
work. . There are four political parties which
are wholly committed to foreign interfer ence in these areas and I therefore cannot vote for any of them. They are the Con servatives, the Liberals, Labour and the Greens.
'
If I jus t wanted to make a protest about this, there are quite a number of
or weeks, I have been obsessed about the county council elections on June 4th, but today, I turn to the European Parliament elections.
Funnily enough,,in the county council !»

As I See. ft . . ,, by Contrarian-" Read otlier As I See It features at ^
oddijall parties for which I could vote. ^ There will be the Christian Party Pro -: HaimiTig Christ’s Lordship and the Social- -, ist Labour Party. Or I could vote for .the Jury Team or the English Democrats. ; Unfortunately, the Monster Raying Loony Party is not standing,- but the British National Party, Libertas and No2EU would fill that gap.
: '
But I do not want to make a protest. In my own boring and rather old fashioned
way, I just want us to be able to trade freely with the EU while running our oivn affairs. It is not much to ask and, as there is a boring and old fashioned party which stands for exactly that, I will be voting for it. I t is the United Kingdom Indepen dence Party. I hope I am not alone in sup porting it.

bought for the Week Plastic surgery?
OME years ago, my hus band and I underwent drastic plastic surgeiy.
We didn’t have a facelift or
a' tummy tuck,' although we could probably both do with
.them; We.went for something far more radical and far more: life changing: we took out all our credit cards, spread them. out on the table and ceremoni ally cut theni all up, initially
i leaving just one card for emer- gencies and our debit card. •
v_,- • We resolved to transfer any ; debt to the one card and even- i tually paid that off and then; cut th a t card up too. Since ' then, our finances have never
looked better. Why? Because .we only buy what we can ; afford, what we can pay for and what we need rather than yearn for. . I t sounds simple and rela
tively painless, but I don’t pre tend that it is easy. It has how-' ever, changed our approach to . money and to materialism:
. the gods of 21st Century con- : sumerism.
. ,
• • Rather than listing our ...wants and our desires (or rather what advertisers want and desire for us) we began to ask the questions: ; • Can we afford it? • Can we justify it? c-
O Do we really need it?: ■ •. The advantage of using a ■
debit card rather than a credit card is th a t most purchases ; are checked against the abili-. ty to pay at the point of pur-; chase and the money is taken - directly out of the account.’■' ■Unless you want to be hit by overdraught charges you keep - your debit card in balance. -

CLITHEROE Roller Skating Compa ny had acquired a site for a new rink with maple floor, spectators gallery and Winslow skates. The up-to-date rink wais to be built on the site of a former hen run between Balfern Terrace and the railway station a t a cost of £1,500. • At Clitheroe Borough Police Court
a man was sentenced to a months hard labour for destroying his clothes. The man told the task master that his gar ments were not fit to wear - they were replaced at a cost of five shillings. • Pupils a t Low Moor School per
formed the o p e re t ta “ Among the Fairies” which had been written by headteacher Mr. E. Woodcock.
Looking Back 50 years ago
A SILVER gilt chain of alternately linked single Lancashire roses and Lacy knots, with a silver gilt and enamelled- pendant replica of the arms of Clitheroe RDC, was presented to Coun. Ernest Holgate. • The Ribblesdale League pro
gramme was completed in ideal condi tions for cricket. At Whalley the village side declared after scoring 218 for the loss of six wdekets. • It was a proud day

of Pendleton when Sir H. Russell Horn by, of Barraclough, opened the new vil lage hall - the result of 14 years of efforts and work after the old village institute was burnt down in 1944.;
elections, I will be voting Conservative, but only because I have such a low opin ion of politicians. For the past 28 years, Labour has run the county council and, so
' far; as possible, it has spent its £700m. a -year in towns and villages th a t vote .Labour.:It is terribly unfair, and I think the Conservatives are just as bad.
I ■?-.With'only a 4% swing, the county ■ council will go Conservative this time and, ■'if we have a Conservative councillor in ■ Clitheroe, we are likely to get the next new school or old people’s day centre. This will not only benefit our children and old peo ple, it will also be a boon to Clitheroe peo ple who work in the construction industry and are on very hard times. About three quarters of our council tax
is spent by the county council and, under Labour, Clitheroe - with its Liberal coun cillor - got hardly any of it back. When the county council goes Conser
vative, next week, we have to decide whether we are going to be on the winning
side and get the gravy. e-mail:

the reins of Sgt Rob Evans as geograph ic co-ordinator of the Ribble Valley. The 37-year-old, who has previously
worked in higher crime areas such as Accrington, Burnley, Blackburn and Great Harwood, is pleased to have joined the Ribble Valley police family and is keen to forge strong bonds with the com munity as well as crack down on crime. He said: “Although the borough is the
safest place to the live in the North West and according to the British Crime Sur vey, i t is the third safest place in the country to live, we cannot be compla cent. , -

working in a rural area and keen to work with his team of dedicated officers, part ner organisations and the community, Sgt Tapp, who is married ivith two chil dren', said: “The Ribble Valley is a place I have never worked before.
