Simonstone netball players second in county finals

THE sunshine at Hollins High School saw nine schools from Hyndburn and the Ribble "Valley com pete in the annual Hi 5 netball competition for the right to compete at Lan cashire Youth Games. The standard of the

■ whole day was a delight to see with parents and teach-

■ ers all fully appreciating the hours of practice all partici pants had put in leading up to the competition. Teams were split into

two groups with the top two from each progressing to the semi-finals. "Winners of the recent Hi

5 Netball league were Moor End Primary School, and they looked well in the opening exchanges. Early pacesetters were

free-scoring Simonstone and most schools saw these as the team to beat. In the other group. West

End B and Mount Pleas ant were both looking to progress to the knock-out stages. Simonstone emerged as,

the eventual winners and" they.now qualify to the Lancashire County Final

. at Preston Sports Arena today. - ' Roger- Haythornth-

waite, competition manag- * er, added: "The whole day was a great success with all participants having a great time competing against each other..” , Simonstone then pro

gressed to the county finals.' ■ Playing at Preston

ly enjoyed the day and- were a great credit to their school. ■ During the tournament

they came up against schools representing Lan caster, South Ribble, Blackpool and other bor oughs across the county.

■. In a great final versus Preston the girls came out

, second best, eventually losing7-4. • - ■ Roger Haythomthwaite,

added: “The girls were magnificent, their skill is

great to see and the enjoy ment level is very pleasing also.

■ “For a school the size of

•Simonstone to have so ' many-netball stars in a great achievement, for all involved.” The girls are pictured

the new trophy played con sistently well in tricky con ditions throughout the two-day event that was hit by rain, hail, wind and some sun.' The Blackburn, saw off

the semi-final challenge of Mary Griffiths, a Sabden" bowler, and Jack Palmer, from Accrington, 21-14. The home team won

their nail-biting semi-final 21-19 against Ribblesdale’s •
