■ Kate Humble to Chatburn. , . Presenter of the BBC’s Spring-

watch programme, K a te ’s visit was p a r t of a project to gather material on the wildlife.associat- ed with Hanson UK’s quarries. ■ I t will be used a t a forthcoming

quarrying conference, which she is also going to present. . Her trip included a,visit to the

biodiversity corner of Lanehead' Quarry a t the top of Crow Trees Brow in Chatburn. '- T he q u a r ry , which is b e s t

known as the source of limestone, destined for cement manufacture, is also home to a nature reserve area set up eight years ago in con

ju n c t io n w ith th e Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Chatbum Pri mary School.

‘ Under th e g uidanc e of th e

Wildlife T ru s t , the area is now undergoing a ne\y programme of management work with pupils from Bowland High School car-

: rying out much of the work on the ground alongside volunteers from the Wildlife T ru s t .. , Kate saw some of the team in

f LET'S not pretend that the expenses I and allowances onslaught is going to

I I go away easily or be overtaken by

events. I t will n ot.'- Excuses go only so far and will be

meaningless if we d o n 't use th is o p p o r tu n i ty .to have a ro o t and ■

branch reform of the whole political system.-

, The toxic allowance system is sys

tem a tic of deeper unease in our political system. I t all needs chang ing and the new House of .Commons, ' and House of Lords needs to wake up to the real anger out in the coun

try. I t h a s been th e ro t te n sy s tem

■ whereby,MPs were able to uplift their pay via allowances and perks which people rightly find so wrong. Inheriting this is one thing, but

carrying on with i t is something else. I t all has to go. , I am n o t going to w a i t for Sir

Christopher Kelly, to reach his find ings on th e longer te rm need for thorough reform before I act. 'We have delayed for too long. The thought of living with some of

my colleagues in a block of flats spe cially designed for us fills me with dread, but a number of apartments around the Westminster area which- MPs can use as a base whilst they are in Parliament will offer a solution to stop the ability of MPs to feather their own nests. i I need to d em o n s tra te th a t I .. understand the anger - that I really getit. ' ' lam going to dispose of my flat in

London and any profit made from that sale will allow me to stop claiih- - ing any second home allowance. I will rent accommodation in West minster. I will n o t claim an y allowances for th a t until every petmy of the profit from the flat sale has go ne.-,;-:?• . .

'.

■ This is just a start. The mood for more fundamental reform of the way

our legislation is created is heard loud and clear. Timetabling of legis lation which denies proper scrutiny must go, and the power of the back benchers to shape amendments and initiate legislation must dramatical ly increase. The election of the new Speaker is

just a start and I am backing Anne Widdecombe as an interim Speaker

■in order th a t someone with great moral standing will be able to bring some order back to our system. . . Ann is standing down a t the next

election and this will give the new House of Commons the opportunity to choose for themselves who they might like to be the longer term occupant of that important position. Delay has got us into this awful

state. Action today is of the essence. NIGEL EVANS MP

House of Commons, London Claims check

I WRITE as a lifelong Conservative, and found it reassuring th a t there was no gravy tra in stop, or even • start, a t local government (Clitheroe - Advertiser, May 21st). However I will still be checking ■

back a t least four years to ensure none pf 'our local couiicillprs have claimed for bath plugs, riioat cleain- ing or duck floats and evasion of capital gains tax. I t is also interesting th a t Nigel

Evans will be publishing his “future”, expense claims. I hope none of our local politicians have claimed thou sands “by mistake”. Lwish I had a

boss like the Fees Office who just seemed to sign off v i r tu a l ly any expenses no matter what for.

:

.' With regards to the Lancashire County Council elections, I see as u su a l we have had the colorful leaflets with the politicians promis ing things th at they cannot possibly deliver and, in a number of cases, cannot even influence the outcome. I was interested in the comments

■ of The Contrarian and would agree th a t Stephen Sutcliffe has done a good job a t County Hall. But sadly, ■ due to the state of politics in general, I will not be casting my vote this time. Yes, Lean hear th e cries of “shame” already. I t is also, in my opinion, very sad

th a t the local Conservatives could not find a suitable candidate from Clitheroe ra th e r th an somebody from Read, as I believe it is impor tant to have people from the particu-. lar area up for election. I realise most councillors and MPs do a good job, but feel the only way

.forward is an immediate General election, give MPs a slight wage rise and ensure only reasonable expenses are claimed for and they must be scrutinised fully and checked inde pendently. IAN BROWN, Chatburn Road, Clithcroc

A59 safety

HAVING had to walk past the acci dent today (Friday) on the A59 at Sawley, I wondered how much longer th is road be allowed to remain

unchanged. The residents of Sawley must be some of the bravest people around as they every day chance the crossing of the A59. Other far less dangerous A roads have protected islands, lower speed limits, traffic lights. Why not here? Every day on my brief journey

into Clitheroe I witness speeding vehicles, vehicles crossing double white lines and ignoring no r ight turn signs. Add to this those drivers using mobile phones and\or carrying under age children in the front seat of c ars or no t strap p ed in a t all. Then those who feel double yellow lines and school zones are where your vehicle should be parked (saves the 100 yard walk).

. . The police say, th a t i t is not the

roads th a t cause the problem, but the motorist. Well if the motorist cannot be relied on to comply with the law, then some actions need to be taken.

. A blitz on the speeders to include roadside checks for vehicle compli ance would be a s ta r t. Better still, proper safely lit junctions, average sp e ed 'e am e ra s and more double white lines where needed. If not, then all we can do is contin

ue to witness more accidents. Just living in the hope th a t whilst “i t is n o t the roads fa u l t” b u t ju s t the actions of the “driver” th a t they somehow manage to avoid, injuring our families or us! Enough is enough. Let’s see action

NOW to stop this constant danger. DAVID ELLIOTT, Sawicy

Transformation

AS a lifelong resident of Clitheroe I should like to express my apprecia tion for all the people who have been involved in th e transformation of Clitheroe Castle and Museum.. I t is an amazing achievement and.

one of which we as members of the borough should be justly proud. We are most fo r tu n a te th a t we

also have the wonderful facility of The Grand which has been given to , the town by the Lancaster Founda tion. We could not have imagined years ago that this was a small popu lar cinema th a t has been t r a n s formed to this state-of-the-art venue. May we all use and enjoy these

wonderful assets to the town. NORMA H. HOYLE Radeclyffe Street, Clitheroc
