A MOTORCYCLIST was killed on Monday afternoon when his bike was in collision with a car driven by a Pa3ithome man near to the Moor cock Inn, Blacko. ; The accident occurred at 2-35 p.m.
and the road was closed for more than five hours between Barrowford and Gis- bum while investigations were carried out. ’
. Police said the 54-year-old motorcy
clist was travelling towards Nelson on a Honda 600cc bike when he attempted to overtake other vehicles and was in collision with a sports car, being driven by a man from Paythorne, which was heading in the opposite direction. ;
• The motorcyclist was pronounced
dead at the scene and later named as Peter Lawson, of Oakwood Close, Burnley. The car driver, who has not been
named, was taken to the Royal Black- bum Hospital by air ambulance suffer ing from head and shoulder injuries and a suspected broken back, but his injuries were not thought to be life- threatening. ' The accident is the latest in a long list
going back over the years which has led to the road between Nelson and Long Preston being classed as the most dan gerous in Britain.
' The 15-mile stretch has seen more
than 100 deaths or serious injuries in the past decade, with more than half of accidents involving motorcyclists.

Getting ready for big festival
MEMBERS and friends of Clitheroe United Reformed Church are busy making prepara- tions for a Community Festival of Flowers, Art and Craft. It takes place at the Castlegate
church from Friday to Sunday, June 5-7th, and will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
on the Friday and Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A team of flower arrangers
from the Clitheroe area are being led by Jane Brown and Cynthia Nanson. Artists and craftspeople from the Ribble Valley-based group New Form Arts will mount an exhibition of their work in the
lower hall. The children of all the Clitheroe churches have also been invited to make miniature gar dens on a dinner plate to display at the festival. Visitors will also be treated to
live music from local pianists and organists who have volunteered to go along and play.
Clitheroe. Police say the driver was attempting to overtake the tmek, which had been travelling in the same direction and was turning into Smithy Bridge Farm. Follow ing the accident, the car collided with a stone gatepost. The A59 was closed for several
hours and traffic diverted through Grindleton and Chatbum causing congestion. ‘ Sgt Mick Young, of the Road
Policing Unit, said: “The male driver of the car is in a serious con dition and the police would ask anyone that saw the collision or witnessed the manner the Citroen
Saxo was being driven in prior to the collision to come forward. “We had to close the road in
both directions although we did get one lane running towards Clitheroe by 9-15 a.m. to try to alleviate the problems in the local ■villages. “However, we had to keep the
other side of the carriageway closed while we carried out our investigations. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience.” • Anyone with information
about the accident can ring 08451 25 35 45 or the Eastern Division Traffic Police on 01254 353210.
