LUKE IS UP TO THE TASK

on the up and up • By Dan Black

BLUES boss Peter Smith is enjoying his unpredictable whirlwind romance with the U n iB on d League as his Clitheroe side continue to

climb the table. The Shawbridge outfit look to ,

have overturned and forgotten the heartache suffered in games gone by with last minute goals conceded, poor refereeing deci sions and strings of bad results, as they climbed to 11th in the First Division North standings after dropping just two points from their last five league games. The latest victory in that fine

nm came against Ossett Albion on Saturday where a superb hat- trick from in-form Andrew Nay lor inspired the Blues to a com fortable 5-1 win. Smith said: “I have been say

ing week-in week-out that we have been and are capable of creating chances, and it was only a matter of time before we started taking them. “I try to play attacking foot

ball where we can get at teams and create chances. “We scored five against Ossett

Albion and to be fair we created another seven or eight decent chances as well. “We really took the game to

them and I was really pleased for the lads. “When you play that style of

football you run the risk of leav ing yourself exposed at the back

and that’s going to happen sometimes, but I don’t like to see a side sit back and approach the game negatively.” Danny Willianis pounced to

score from close range following good work from Nathan Taylor in the 21st minute, but the hosts levelled the scores just before the interval. The- Ribble Valley side,

regained the advantage in the 52nd minute when Naylor grabbed his first from eight yards before he scored again just seven minutes later after Zach Clarke made the most of a goal keeping error. Naylor rounded off his hat- trick in the 65th minute when he

drilled the ball past the Ossett stopper before Clarke set up Gavin Lee Ellison three minutes

.later who rounded off the scor ing and secured the three points. “Performances and results like

that give the lads a lot of confi dence,” said Smith. “We are a new team and a

young team so for me.we can only get better because the more UniBond experience they get the better these players will become. ■ “We are looking good; we’ve

got pace and strength so I believe we are always going to hurt teams. “We have been on the wrong

side of some results which we didn’t deserve, but the players are getting their reaps now and they are enjoying their football which obviously has a positive affect oh the pitch. “They have shown that they

can bounce back and I am really pleased for them. “We have got a long way to go

so we can’t kid ourselves because we have got a lot of tough games ahead of us. “We don’t want to get carried'

away just yet but I feel whoever we play we will give them a- game. “The lads are doing their best

and working hard and the sup porters have been enjoying themselves as well which is good to see. “When the lads see the sup port it really gets them going.

•We have got a good bunch of positive supporters who play a big part at the football club.”

Tuesday evening’s game

against bottom side Rossendale United was postponed at the last minute because of a wet playing surface which a confi dent Smith saw as a huge missed opportunity. He said: “I was disappointed

that the game was called off because we are on a good nm of form at the moment and we want to play games. “I saw the game against

Rossendale United as a game we could have won and with not many teams playing on Tuesday night it gave us a chance to catch up on points with the teams above. “We just need to stay focused

and not get carried away. “We need to keep working

hard and not let these results get to our head because to stay with the chasing pack you’ve got to keep grinding out results. “But if we had played and

taken the three points on Tues day night we coidd have climbed

.another three places. “We just want to keep our

heads down and keep getting good results because we are climbing the table without any body noticing us which is good for us.” The Blues will now look to

continue their ascendancy through the league table when they play host to Wakefield on Saturday, with kick-off set for 3 p.m. The Blues then replay the fix

ture against Rossendale United on Tuesday with kick-off at 7-45 'p.m.

MICHAEL Bisping [o&ove] returned to'the ring in fabulous style atUFC105. Defeat in his last

bout to Dan Hender son at UFC 100 had aroused questions in certain quaiters! . But the Clitheroe- bom fighter stepped up to the plate in some style at Manchester’s MEN Arena, achiev ing a second round TKO to overcome the challenge of Canadi- ann Denis Kang.

, -And afterwards,

Bisping spoke of his delight. “I am absolutely over the moon, you have no idea how I felt after the last fight,” he said. ' “This is my life and

I dedicate everything to it - it really hurts me that people don’t give me the respect I think ideserve.’’ ' ' Bisping soaked up

the pressure Jrom Kang in - th e -first round, and despite never being in trouble,- he lost the bpenerafter being dropped by a right hand and on his back. ') '■
