Dyslexia conference
A CONFERENCE is being held tomorrow by th e N o rth E a s t Lan cashire Dyslexia Associ a t io n to give parents, te ach ers and health practitioners an oppor tunity to respond to the Rose Report, which is offering placements to two future teachers. The Rose Report
clearly indicated the present need for special ists in the field, one-to- one tu it io n and, most importantly; the need for dyslexia training for all future teacher training courses. If dyslexia or dyspraxia is not recog nised by teachers or par en ts and eventually employers, self-esteem plunges and the child or adult becomes seriously a t risk from missed life opportunities and health problems. Many children and
adults -with dyslexia and dyspraxia are b r ig h t individuals with varied talents and in order for th e ir p o ten tia l to be realised, self-esteem and motivation must be kept intact. This conference will address the prob lems and answers to low self-esteem and lack of confidence, which may seriously blight the life of those with dyslejda and dyspraxia. Guest speakers are
Lois Addy, a senior lec tu re r and published author, and Sandra Farmer, a well-respected speaker and well-known figure in Lancashire edu cation. Tickets for the event

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, November 191h, 2009 Bonfire Night spectacular
THE five service clubs of th e Ribble Valley again pulled off another spectacu lar Bonfire and Fireworks Display on the Clitheroe Castle Grounds. This year’s event,
although dogged by rain during the week, was attended by approximately 5,000 people to watch an excellent bonfire topped by the winning “Guy Fawkes” from Chathum School, sur rounded by other school Guys from St Michael and
St John’s, Pendle and Brookside Primary Schools, all in Clitheroe. The R o tary Clubs of
Clitheroe, Ribblesdale and Pendle View, plus Clitheroe Roimd Table and Clitheroe Lions, provided all the com mittee and 60 stewards needed to run the event in the usual safe environment, where a spectacular fire work display was presented to the usual high standard of previous years. As a result th e North
West Air Ambulance and Life Education Centres, which offers healthy li-ving advice to local pr imary schools, ■will now share the £10,000 profit made on the event. This was generated from
donations made at the gate, sales of goods and the most generous underwriting of th e fireworks by Hanson Cement (formerly Castle Cement), who also provided much of the safety equip ment.
The only disappointing
part of the night for organ isers was an illegal trader selling novelties outside the grounds, robbing the chari ties of some of their normal revenue. Hopefully action will be taken to avoid this next year. The organisers would like
to th a n k th e people of Clitheroe and the Ribble' Valley for their support in
. again making th is one of the star attractions of the year.

Alan turns explorer
AN exploration of Offa's Dyke by Alan Plowright was the subject of Clitheroe Natu ralists most recent lecture. I t had taken Mr Plowright
two weeks in all to complete the trip, but in two sections after a slip on the base of a monument a t Knighton caused a back injury. The 168-miles of the dyke
started near Chepstow and ended at Prestayn near Rhyll. Constructed in 757 A.D.,
the Offa Dyke was built as a border against warring ene mies of the Mercian kingdom. Much of i t is now a green trackway. The first sign of the structure was near the village of Redbrook, where a naval temple possessed memorials of famous admirals including Horatio Nelson. The architec
ture of the county town of Monmouth included a historic shire hall in Agincourt Square and a 13th century bridge ■with a toll house often used as a prison. Hay-on-Wye was reached
and then the hills of Radmor- shire with the banks of the dyke becoming more evident. Mr Plowright continued his
journey the following year via the River Severn, the Iron Age camp Beacon Circle, the Montgomery canal and the remains of the racecourse at Oswestry, followed by Chirk Castle. Panoramic -views were enjoyed across the country side and the walk came to a close by the Prestatyn coast, where the Offa's Dyke Centre gave details of th e whole
route.
being collated and will be published soon. The winners in each age group will then have their images entered into th e R o ta ry Lan c ash ire and Cumbria District Competition, the results of which will be known early in the new year. As well as prizes for the winners,
all entrants -will receive a certificate of accomplishment and Rotary hope to hold a display of all the entries in Clitheroe in February 2010. Other Rotary youth competitions
being held over the winter period include Young Chef, Young Writer and Youth Speaks, as well as the ever-popular Rotary Technology Tournament, which will be held on March 12th, 2010.
