Pendle team found hiin difficult to deal with as he ran in two quick tries, both converted by Tom Tabemer. Alistair Sansome and

Joseph Kenny also looked pacey with ball in

hand, before Max Ble- witt stormed over for Clitheroe’s third try. This was quickly fol

lowed by Will’s hat-trick try, while Oliver Murray, Jack Crocker and Jake Alston also touched down to give the locals a com manding interval lead. With the coaches

deciding to swap the teams around at the

break, Murray scored three tries for Pendle to

Harrogate B............... 29 Clilheroe Under 13s...l7 AN under-strength

Under 13s headed west to play a well-organised Harrogate side. The match started well

with Clitheroe scoring a break away try in the first few minutes through Ethan Wringe. However Clitheroe did

n’t have things their own way, and having broken through the staunch Clitheroe line three times, Harrogate went into half-time leading 22- 7.

Clitheroe kept their spirits up and tries from Jarvis Stanton and Wringe cut the gap to five points, before a late Harrogate try saw them beaten. All age groups from

Under 13 (Year eight) upwards are at home to Burnley on Sunday, while Under 12s (year seven) and below are away at Chorley. Meet at the club at 9-

lead shortly after, as Cookson again swung the ball over for Ryan Hilton to nod the ball across for fellow centre half Dean Austin to sweep home. A free-kick conceded on the

edge of the box gave Catforth a way back into the game, before Ross’ cleveri header sent Cook

Super Luke is up to the Task

Athletics

A RISING athlete from the Ribble Valley has been hon oured at a star-studded awards ceremony. Fifteen-year-old Luke

Tasker, who regularly competes at national and international level at modem pentathlon and now represents Great Britain, was crowned the “Rising Star” a t the Lancashire Sports Awards 2009. The talented teenager, who

lives in Waddington and attends Bowland High School, Grindleton, has just recently returned from the European Championships in Portugal, where he achieved a youth boys bronze medal, the first ever for GB and he is ranked second in his age group nationally. Training every night of the

week, Luke truly is a credit to his sport and the clubs he trains with. He was among the many

Red Rose county’s rising stars and amateur sporting champi ons who were recognised at the sports awards, staged at the Paradise Rooms, Blackpool • Pleasure Beach, on Friday. A host of national sport

stars, including Jimmy Arm- field QBE, Olympic boxing medalist, Courtney Fry, and Kara Nwidobie Sharpe (“Pan ther” from Sky One’s hit show

“Gladiators”) were among the 500 guests who attended on the night. Lancashire Sports Awards,

now in their eighth year, recog nise and reward the achieve ments of people who have made an outstanding contribution to sport in Lancashire - represent ing all 14 boroughs from across the county. Among the awards up for

grabs were Coach of the Year (sponsored by the University of Central Lancashire), Commu

nity Club of the Year, Young Volunteer (sponsored by the “Vinvolved” youth volunteer ing programme and Lancashire Education Business Partner ship) and Rising Star (spon sored by the Haythornthwaite Sports Foundation). Mr Adrian Leather, chief executive of Lancashire Sports Partnership, which organises the annual event, said: “Lan cashire Sports Awards is a fan tastic celebration of sporting .talent and dedication, of which

the county should be truly proud. “The night was a great suc

cess and it was wonderful to have such prominent national sporting champions as special guests. “They’re an inspiration, not

only to all the winners of the 2009 awards but to everyone involved in grassroots sport in the county.”

(s) Whalley making cup progress

Greyhound Ford Red .2 Whalley Red .................4 THIS second round cup game was played against a strong wind, but it was "Whalley’s close passing game that was best suit ed for the conditions. Whalley went three goals up

Soccer

by half time thanks to two goals from the left boot of Lewis May- bin and a solo goal by Andrew Blacklock. The second half saw Grey hound start well with more pres

sure on the Whalley goal that resulted in a penalty to pull one back, wth a second goal scored just minutes later. The Whalley team responded

well to the added pressure and the match was secured by a great individual run and cross

from the left by Joseph Turner that was gratefully turned in by Eliot Mashiter for the winning goal. . I t was a reflection of this

hard-fought second half that the Whalley man-of-the-match was defender Matthew Learning.

The foundations are clearly

there for Chipping to do well in the division. However, work is clearly

back to winning ways when they welcome New Longton on Saturday (kick-off 2 p.m.).

A team are out

of luck Badminton

CLITHEROE A were in action in Division Two of the Mid-Lancs Badminton League with a tough match against table-toppers Hawks B. Jane MacEwan and

Laura Cannon won one ladies doubles match, while Paul Cronshaw and Mal colm Brown took a mens. Louise Burrill and

Stephen Pym did well in the mixed doubles, winning two and nar rowly losing one 17- 14.

However, it was a

disappointing night as no points were accrued. In Division Four

the C team battled hard against Whittle A.

Chris Smitton, who

made a return from injury, recorded three wins partnering Ann Taylor in the ladies and young substitute Ross MacEwan in the mixed. Dave MacKenzie

also took three with Shirley Bush and Bill Robertson, with Robertson and Ann Taylor taking the total to seven games. In Division One of

the Blackburn and District League the local A team notched up a solid win with Stephen Fym and Malcolm Brown tak ing five games each and Louise Burrill keeping a clean sheet for a 16-4 victory.
