Countess of Munster Trust, their concert start ed with the “Duo Concer- tante”, a gentle and melodic piece by 19th cen tury guitar virtuoso Mario Giuliani, followed by the “Himgarian Pas toral Fantasy”, by Franz Doppler - better known as the discoverer of the Doppler Effect. piece by contemporary American composer Jason Cress was next. Com posed in 2008, “Indone sian Scenes” is heavily influenced by Balinese gamelan music, where instruments are played in

pairs, tuned slightly apart to produce the very ‘b u ^ ’ and “shimmering” sound. Sarah had to use some advanced tonguihg techniques, while the per cussive effects used by Andrew gave the impres sion that his guitar was a set of drums. Many mem- bers of the audience

. expressed their enjoyment of this unusual piece of music. The first half finished

with “Sonatina”, by Mario Castelnuovo- Tedesco. Italian bom, but, emigrating to America in the late 1930s, Castelnuo- vo-Tedesco later became the teacher of Henry

hich movie? •

Mancini and Andre Previn. Sonatina’s beauti ful melody, heightened by Latin rhythms and har monies, proved to be a foretaste for the rest of the concert. • The second half started with a guitar solo,

“Jongo”, by Paulo Belli- nati. This was based on an Angolan dance brought to Brazil by slaves. Highly popular, the jongo was banned by the authorities, which gives a clue to its exuberant nature! Although French, Jacques Ibert's “Paraboles” and “Entr’acte” enabled the two instrumentalists to create an image of a Fla

menco dancer finishing with her arms in the air and a stamp of her feet. The recital finished

with pieces by two con temporary Latin Ameri can composers. Brazilian Egberto Gismonti is a classically trained pianist who taught himself to play the guitar. His “Agua e Vino” has a haunting melody which gave little clue to what was to follow. Argentinian Maximo Diego Pujol’s “Nubes de Buenos Aires” and “Can- dombe de los Buenos Tiempo” are both based on the candombe, another dance brought over the Atlantic by African slaves.
