A HISTORIC award-winning choir will make its debut per formance in Clitheroe next weekend. For the first time Nelson Arion
Male Voice Choir (pictured) will appear in the Valley town. The concert will take place at
Clitheroe United Reformed Church on the evening of Satur day, November 28th, with pro ceeds going towards the congre gation’s Vision Project. The aim is to regenerate the
Moor Lane building and make, the church more welcoming and of greater use to the community. Tickets, which cost £6 for
adults and £3 for under-12s including refreshments, are avail able from Clitheroe Music, from church members and by ringing 01200 427115. • Formed in 1887 by a group of
eight men froiri Pendle, the Arion won its first competition in 1893 and its first Welsh National Eisteddfod in 1919.’Over the
Flooding on roads
HEAVY rainfall caused chaos on the Ribble Valley’s roads in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday) morning. The A59 was badly affected at
both Sawley and Langho, with police directing traffic during the peak rush-hour period as com muters travelled to work. In Clitheroe, police received
numerous distress calls including one from a motorist stuck in ris ing flood water under the railway
bridge at Waddington Road and another close to the Edisford Bridge pub. Bolton-by-Bowland Primary
School also closed for the day due to some members of staff being unable to make the journey to the village school because of the flooding. As the rain eased during the
morning, most roads, including the A59, were once again passable with care.
decades the choir has earned more than 100 first prizes, and in 13 visits to the International Eisteddfods secured five first, two second and three third prizes. In 1967, after 10 years’ success.
Jack Smith handed the title of Music Director to his eldest son Frank. More than 40 years later PVank still directs the choir, with the assistance of deputy music director John Taylor, who is also the choir’s long-serving accompa nist. (s)

A blue Vauxhall Corsa car was
severely damaged during the acci dent, which happened near Little- moor House. Anyone with information
