this Honda is a 4x4 that even its manu facturers tacitly admit is next to useless off road. They know it and you know it. Therefore you
are not in the pre tence game. You are buying this car to drive on the road and are accepting the com promises and per ceptions therein. Of course, you
could kid yourself that this diesel model you have bought is better equipped should you ever feel the need to tackle a gently inclined

gravel drive, but let us get real. The benefits of
this 2.2-litre oil burner are really felt when (a) flying past yet another fuel station with half a tank still showing and (b) feeling a juicy surge of torque when you jink off the roundabout and down the motorway on- ramp. The advantages
of this car over its petrol sibling are largely in conven ience and that additional engine muscle. Company car
buyers will be able to swing the argu ment in terms of carbon dioxide tax ation, but for the vast majority of CR-V drivers try ing to justify this diesel version in terms of pounds and pence over its petrol sibling just is not going to hap pen. Here is why.

Most will use their CR-V as a subur ban scoot with the occasional trip to the coast thrown in and never rack up the sort of mileages that will claw back the price premium the diesel model is saddled with. Despite Honda’s
best intentions, the CR-V is no sports car and the diesel engine suits it real ly rather well. It is fascinating to see how this engine,
once the state of the art, is now no longer at the very pinnacle of diesel engine develop ment, offering a lit tle more lag and a tad less refinement than the best pow- erplants in its class. It remains a very
impressive per former and there is always the slightly guilty pleasure of driving a car with an engine that is a bit bigger than is strictly necessary. It handles well,
too. Unlike many 4x4s in this sector of the market, the CR-V does not feel the least bit top heavy. So many of its
rivals pitch and lurch along, gener ating what chassis engineers describe as “head toss” for their unfortunate occupants. The CR-V is dif
ferent, thanks to a taut suspension backed up by Honda’s revolu tionary Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. . The Honda CR-
V diesel offers a distinctly car-like feel, which for the vast majority of customers is the one thing they want, allied to that commanding ride height and keen practicality. Although it may
aim at a limited brief, it does the job with ruthless efficiency.

used model guide: Volvo C70 (2006 to date)
By ANDY ENRIGHT
MODELS COVERED: (2dr coupe-con vertible, 2.4, 2.5 petrol, 2.0, 2.4 diesel - S, SE, SE Lux, Sport)
car was the MKl Volvo C70. It was good looking and solidly screwed
S
together arid this, along with the other Volvo corporate values, were enough for most customers. The fact that it was not particularly great to drive was beside the point. Sales were strong and the car lasted right through to 2006. Its successor is, by any objective measure,
a massively superior proposition. Melding the coupe and convertible versions of the old C70 into one car, the 2006 C70 features a folding hard top roof and a sharp chassis. It has also singularly failed to capture the
imagination of the market in the way its less able predecessor did. Perhaps this is as a function of improved competitors or the fact that savvy car buyers realised that there was not a vast amount of difference between the C70 and the Ford Focus CC in their basic architecture. Nevertheless, the Volvo remains a well
respected product. Perhaps aware of the premium pricing issue, Volvo took steps to reduce the C70’s perceived cost by introduc ing keenly-priced 2.0-litre diesel variants in autumn.
What You Pay The C70 is in reasonable demand and
plump used prices reflect this fact. You will need to front up with around £23,000 for the first of the 06 plate 2.4i Sport models and about the same for a slightly higher mileage SE. The T5 SE starts at around £25,000 for a decent example. Diesel models are a little tougher to find, but kick o ff at around £25,500 for a D5 SE. Insurance for the C70 is not cheap, with the bigger diesels and petrols ranging between Groups 15 and 18.
What You Get Unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Show,
this C70 retains the sleek good looks of its predecessor, but augments the offering with a folding hard top and improved driving manners. With the hood in place, you probably
would not guess that the C70 is capable of flipping its lid. The rear deck is not overly long (the usual giveaway) and the roofline is smooth and beautifully integrated with the rest of the bodywork. The old C70 coupe used to sell within five seconds of cus
OME cars were never particularly good yet somehow wormed their way into the national affection. Just such a

tomers dapping eyes on it - and this gener ation model has proved similarly successful. After all, many of the basic ingredients
are much the same. The stance and propor tioning are similar, it will still sit four adults in comfort, and it still adheres to Volvo’s impeccably high safety standards. Volvo developed this C70 to offer new standards of preventive and protective safety in the convertible market, the car including an advanced body structure, greater torsional rigidity and several innovations that make it unique among open-top cars. An example of this is the door-mounted
Inflatable Curtain (IC), part of the C70’s integrated Side Impact Protection System (SIPS). As the IC cannot be fitted in the roof, as with the rest of the Volvo range, it has been fitted in the door to inflate upwards instead of downwards. Volvo’s safe ty engineers have also fine-tuned the IC to be extra stiff, so it can stay upright and help protect the head more effectively. In addi tion, the curtain then deflates more slowly to provide additional protection if the car rolls over.
What To Look For The big ticket item to check with the C70
is the hood mechanism. It is one of the more reliable actions of its type, but you will need to make sure everything is working fine and that the boot cassette engages properly in its mount. The underlying mechanicals are tried and tested parts and should not give cause for concern. The interiors are also more hard wearing than most.
Replacement Parts (approx based on a 2006 C70T5) Expect
to pay around £175 for a clutch assembly, while front brake pads will not see much change from £70 for a pair, with rears weighing in at a more lightweight £38. You will be looking at £180 for a radiator and the best part of £200 for a starter motor.
On The Road In the UK, this C70 was offered from
launch with two in-line, five-cylinder petrol engines, the range-topping, turbo-charged T5 producing 226 b.h.p. and torque of 320Nm, plus a normally-aspirated 2.4-litre unit producing 170 b.h.p. In addition, there is a five-cylinder, 180 b.h.p. D5 diesel engine, plus the later addition of a four cylinder 136 b.h.p. 2.0D unit. The most impressive engine is the D5
common-rail turbo diesel. The 178 b.h.p. output indicates strong performance and the 0-60 m.p.h. sprint of 8.8 seconds is very rapid for a vehicle of the C70’s bulk, but it is the engine’s hefty torque output that defines its on-road character. A muscular 350Nm is generated between
1,750 and 3,250Nm and this endows the car with strong and instantly available accelera tion across a wide range of engine speeds. It also helps the D5 work nicely with its five- speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The gearbox does not have to work hard
to keep the engine on the boil and it all adds to the tranquil atmosphere inside the C70. The car produces a 38.7 m.p.g. combined fuel economy figure and CO2 emissions are pegged at 193g/km. If you do not need all that power, have a lower budget and want to improve emissions, a four cylinder 136 b.h.p. 2.0D diesel version is on offer. The Volvo is no slouch, but it is not a par
ticularly rewarding car to drive fast. The pleasure is to be gleaned from folding that roof down and going for a leisurely cruise.
Overall The Volvo C70 does a very good job for
the sort of customer it is targeted at. These buyers will likely be older and would like a feelgood car that does not impose tiresome sacrifices. The D5 diesel is the pick of the bunch, but given that many C70s cover very modest mileages, the 2.4-litre petrol models are the most plentiful.
