3M throws weight behind road safety

LOCAL employers 3M marked National Road Safety Week with a spe cial event for the children at Brookside Primary School, Clitheroe. The company, which is a headline

sponsor of the national week, set up a marquee in the grounds of its Upbrooks site with demonstrations and talks by the police and fire service. Goodie bags containing reflective snap- bands and other high visibility acces sories were also handed out to the 130 children who attended the day. Headteacher Graham Claydon said

the school had really appreciated the effort put in by the company on its behalf. “If it only stops one child from hav

Small grants for voluntary groups

LOCAL, voluntary and communi ty groups based in Clitheroe and the surrounding villages can bene fit from the latest round of small grants available through the Clitheroe the Future Small Com munity Fund. This grant scheme is funded by

Clitheroe the Future and is admin istered by Hyndburn and Ribble Valley CVS. The fund awards grants of up to £250 to help local groups carry out new projects and activities, which benefit and involve the local community. The fund aims to help small

groups (those without paid staff) to c a r ry out activities, which might not otherwise be possible. Projects must work towards a t least one of the following aims: • Getting people involved in

local decision making, such as cre ating a village youth forum • Preserving and enhancing the

area’s local heritage and natural environment, such as creating art work to go in a community garden. • Helping to promote the area

as a quality visitor destination, such as organising a stage produc tion in a village hall

• Ensuring that area is provid

ing key services and facilities for local communities, such as setting up a new mother and toddler group in an isolated village • Contributing to the local

economy, such as organising a pro gramme of poetry readings which take place in local cafes. To request an application pack,

or to find out more about the fund, please contact the CVS office on 01200 422995. Groups are urged to apply now for this time limited fund, which is due to end in March 2008.

ing an accident it will be have been worth it,” he commented. “We teach road safety in school, but

if they are taken out to a special event like this then the impact is far greater. They thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a great deal at the same time.” 3M is promoting child road safety in

Lancashire in a number of others ways this winter, including taking the mes sage direct to the schools with a the- atre-in-education show being per formed in local primary school halls. The musical production by Quantum Theatre highlights the health and envi ronmental benefits of cycling or walk ing to school, while reinforcing the road safety message. The company is also donating anoth

er 1,300 high visibility vests to primary schools in the district as part of its

national ongoing campaign, which has involved around 95,000 vests being given away to schools close to 3M’s UK sites since 2005. I t has also teamed up with the Department for Transport, teachers and the road safety charity, Brake, to create a free online road safe ty teaching resource - www.3Mstreet- wise.co.uk - which provides worksheets for teachers, interactive games and ani mated film for pupils, and a separate section for parents. Site manager Dave Smith said:

“Road accidents are the single biggest cause of accidental death among five to 14-year-olds in this country and that is a concern for us all. “We are delighted that the Brookside

pupils enjoyed the event and gained so much from it. We hope that the combi nation all of our activities in the region will be a real practical help in reducing child road accidents this winter.” • A survey has been launched on the

3M Streetwise website for Lancashire parents to have their say on the steps they want to see brought in to reduce the number of local children killed or seriously injured on the roads and the results will be shared with the Depart ment of Transport and the region’s highway authorities.
