Village mourns former singer and librarian

TRIBUTES have been pouring in for Whalley res ident Elizabeth Brigid Snape, who died peacefully

in hospital on Sunday. Born in London and bap

tised at Westminister Cathe dral, Mrs Snape (known as Betty to her family and friends) was brought up in Read, where her father, William Helm, was the village postmaster; at that time, Read Post Office was located at 108 Leigh Terrace, Whalley Road. Mrs Snape’s father was also

a director of the family firm of William Ingham and Sons Ltd, cotton spinners and man ufacturers, of Albert and Riverside Mills, Padiham, and her ancestors had built the town’s first powered spinning mill in 1807. Her mother, Mary, was a

native of County Wicklow, Ireland. Mrs Snape (pictured right)

was educated at St John’s RC Primary School, Padiham and Notre Dame Convent Gram mar School, Blackburn. On leaving school, she

trained as a secretary before leaving work to raise her fami

ly- In 1975, Mrs Snape began

work at Whalley Library where she worked until retire ment in 1989. During her years of retirement, Mrs Snape devoted herself to her husband and family. A talented musician in her

younger days, Mrs Snape gained her A.L.C.M. Diploma (piano) at only 16 years of age and received singing lessons from a noted teacher at the Royal Northern College of Music. She was well known in and around the Burnley area as a gifted soprano soloist. Mrs Snape was a devout

Roman Catholic and a parish ioner of English Martyrs, Whalley, where she first met her late husband, Eddie, at a wedding of mutual friends. Mr and Mrs Snape cele

brated their 45th wedding anniversary in September of this year. Mr Snape died last month. A funeral service will take

place tomorrow at 10-30 a.m. at the English Martyrs Church, Whalley. Mrs Snape leaves three

sons, John, Andrew and Michael and two granddaugh ters. (s)

Former Clitheroe shop owner dies aged 101

A FORMER Clitheroe resi dent, who celebrated her 101st birthday with her twin sister last month, has died. Mrs Elizabeth Sowerbutts

e

(pictured) died on Friday, less than a month after celebrating reaching three figures. Mrs Sowerbutts and her sis

ter, Mary Blackburn, were among just a handful of twins to have reached the landmark of notching up 202 years between them and at the time a Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “It’s a pretty rare feat.” Mrs Sowerbutts was bom in

Pendleton. Her mother, Emma, died when she was just two years old so she and Mary were brought up by two maid en aunts in Eshton Terrace, Clitheroe. Mrs Sowerbutts was well

known in the area for running a shoe shop in Moor Lane, Clitheroe, for more than 30 years with husband, Horace Sowerbutts. The couple had one son,

Brian, who was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School for

Boys. After his national serv ice, he joined the Milk Mar keting Board in Clitheroe, retiring in 1991 after 39 years of service. Mrs Sowerbutts moved to

Wembury, south Devon, 15 years ago to live close to her son and his wife, Jean. Paying tribute to his moth

er, Mr Sowerbutts said: “She always enjoyed life. She was kind, caring and loved spend ing time with her grand and great-grandchildren.” A funeral service will take

place at Efford Crematorium, Plymouth, on Wednesday, (s)
