WADDINGTON

Sketches At the meeting of Waddington WI, president Mrs Ann Howard welcomed everyone and intro duced the speaker Mr Carr.

He spent some time in the RAF as an aero engineer, and then took a restaurant in Manchester and later a hotel in Blackpool. After the illuminations closed for the winter he decided he would s ta rt drawing and painting again. Many an hour on the sea front he would spend sketch ing and then he would sell them to the libraries in Blackpool, all 13 of them. When he went on holiday he took his sketch book instead of a camera, especially to visit his daughter in Hamp shire, where he painted Rutley Manor and Romsey Abbey. Further north he did sketch es of Ashley Hall House, Thornton, Hollowforth Hall, Plumpton and sev eral by commission which he did for Tracy Dawson at Fairhaven.

Mrs Marian Wood thanked Mr Carr for a most humorous and entertaining evening.

Mrs Elizabeth Under wood has organised an outing to Barton Grange on October 30th and Mrs Mar garet Garnett will go as delegate to the autumn council meeting at Preston on October 10th.

Mrs Doreen Under-’ wood read her poem “Never on a Friday” which has been pub lished in the WI “HotPot”.

The next meeting will take place in the Methodist School room on October 9th. The speaker Mr Simon Entwistle will talk on “Lan cashire Heroes, Vil lains and Myths.” There will be a har vest supper and tea hostesses will be

Previously the event in Whalley has been held in the Confer ence House, but this year staff at the cafe decided to try a change of venue, hoping it would bring in more cus tomers.

Council Parking on King Street, waste bins outside the Alms Houses and the problem of the refuse vehicle going through the Abbey Gatehouse are among items on tonight's agenda of Whalley Parish

Expansion plans to create jobs

THREE new jobs are being created by a Rib ble Valley marketing agency after expansion plans were given the go-ahead.

Workhouse Creative Marketing has been granted permission by Ribble Valley Bor ough Council for a new stone-built studio at its site in Blackburn Road, Ribchester.

The new building will provide a photographic studio, office, storage, disabled toilet, chang ing facility and prop building area. Current ly in its 15th year of business, Workhouse Creative Marketing employs 20 staff and provides marketing and creative services to businesses across the country. Now it is set to expand further with the introduction of the new building.

Managing director Mr Mark Jones said: “The new ‘drive in’ studio will allow us to offer a much greater range of photographic options in house.

“It will be large enough for us to build and photograph kitchens, bathrooms and bed-

. rooms, there MU be a significant prop build ing area and changing facilities for models.

“We will be able to offer top quality photog raphy for use in national press, magazines, brochures, websites and for PR purposes.

“This expansion is part of our ongoing plan to create a centre of marketing and creative exceUence here in the Ribble Valley”

He hopes building work will start early next year.

Celebrating age

NEXT week is Age Concern Week and time to celebrate the charity’s work supporting older people in the Ribble Valley. Every day, Age Concern Lancashire is helping older people to keep their independence and handle life’s up and downs.

Everyone wants to be happy and enjoy life to the full regardless of age, but losing a loved one,- a serious illness or having to move home can stop you in your tracks - especially if you do not have family and

■friends around you to support you. Age Concern can step in to help older people to get back on their feet.

On Thursday, Age Concern’s Ribble Valley office will be hosting a Celebration Day at the Mayor’s Parlour, Clitheroe.

Linda Salazaar, area manager Age Concern Lancashire said: “We are delighted to be officially celebrating older people and their achievements, and this day will help high light the range of services, activities and events for older people living in our com munity that we offer.”
