RIBBLE Valley Netball Club’s annual trip to Nottingham proved a success. . Six squads, aged 10 to 15, participated

against teams from Tameside, Birming ham, Poole, Lincoln, Blackpool, Essex, Hartlepool, Hertford, Oldham and Not tingham.

The Under 11s team played their first

tournament at 7-a-side, and managed a mixed bag of wins, draws and losses, but their effort and commitment throughout was admirable in finishing mid-table. The two Under 12s teams gained eighth

SUCCESS: Ribble Valley’s Under 14s (s) Bittersweet loss for Maroon and Golds

ClitheroeRUFC. . . . . . . .14 Thornton Cleveleys.......... 21 CLITHEROE endured a bit tersweet defeat in their first home game of the season. Having scored two unan

swered tries, you would have thought you deserved victory, but the winners’ champagne turned to vinegar as the visi tors’ fly half had one of those d a y s w ith h is b o o t ’ , as i t seemed he just could not miss. P en a lty k ick s and drop

g o a ls , b oth were th e same result, scoring three points at a time to slowly whittle away

Clitheroe’s lead and consign the Littlemoor outfit to their second successive reverse. Even though they had two

enforced changes, with loose forward James H a yn e s s t i l l out of action after being forced off last week, replaced by last se a so n ’s C o lts skipper, the improving Simon Cowgill in his first full start for the senior team.

In the three quarters, Mar

quite gift victory, though, as substitute professional Pankaj Tripathi opened. the innings and carried his bat for a typically bel ligerent 72, but it wasn’t enough to se e the Arbories men to victory. Tripathi stepped in for

Kashif Siddique to close the season and helped the side to a total of 213 all out. R u n s from Calum

Clarke (3 0 ) and P e te r Usher (24) upped the vis itor s’ score, before both fe l l a t th e h an d s of B o lto n a s p a r t o f th e Clitheroe man’s 6-53. Mark Hargreaves (2-

5 4 ) , home professional M ich a e l P ap p s (1 -5 2 ) and Josh Marquet (1-7) also got in on the act to see Padiham stopped in their tracks.

Neil Bolton In reply, B o lton was

joined by Papps for the first wicket, and between them the pair almost won the game on the ir own before the la t te r was caught by Usher off the b owling o f M ich a e l Hawke for 63. Low singles from Peter

Dibb (4), Dan Glover (6) and Carl Palmer (3) fol lowed, before ca p ta in Simon Coulter (.16 not out) did enough alongside Bolton to see the Ribble Valley side to victory. Kevin H itch on was

Padiham’s leading wicket taker with 2-55, catching Dibb off his own delivery and bow lin g Glover shortly after. Palmer was run out.

ous week’s effort. Looking more purposeful in

both the pack and among the hacks, they made good inroads through the Thornton defence. And after some sustained

pressure saw th e defence crack, Lafrancechina was on hand to shrug off a couple of

would-be tacklers to claim the score. However, after a successful

conversion, Thornton kicked in to gear, and C l ith e ro e ’s defence was tested to the full. Sortie hard work on the training paddock in this area

paid dividends, as Thornton couldn’t find the time or space to launch a meaningful attack. At the turn round, Clitheroe

were ahead 7-0 and looking comfortable, but the visitors came back into the game and s ta r ted ch ip p ing awa y a t Clitheroe's lead, first by a cou ple of penalties, and then the T ho rnton number 10 h i t a purple patch and slotted three drop g o a ls to lea v e the Maroons reeling. A last big push in the final

quarter saw Clitheroe play some of their best rugby. The

pack got their driving game g o in g , and supported the backs well. Wingman James Dickinson

d isp la y ed some a gg res siv e charges, setting up good field position. Then out of the blue, veteran number eight Ollie McEntyre blasted through for a touchdown under the sticks. A conversion closed the gap,

but yet another transgression from the home side gave yet more points to the Thornton kicking machine. Desperately disappointing for Clithe ro e , but where

Tho rnton kicked the ir chances, Clitheroe’s kickers couldn't find the target, with nine simple points going beg ging at various times during the match to ultimately prove th e difference between the teams. Chorley are the visitors to

Littlemoor on Saturday, with the likelihood of an early kick off (1-15 p.m.) to catch the England v Samoa game in the clubhouse.
