A CLITHEROE comput er training centre has com pleted the shipment of 21 refurbished computers for use by u n d e r-p riv i leg ed children in South America. The Database IT Centre, in

Henthorn Road, has sent the computers to Bartica Sec ondary School, in Guyana. During the past year students John, Martin, Karl and Danny from Ribblesdale High School Technology College, in Clitheroe, have been working with staff and volunteers at Database to refurbish, test, configure and shrink wrap the donated second-user comput ers. The practical skills learnt

during this time were comple mented with portfolio work, allowing the Ribblesdale stu dents to successfully achieve accreditation in eDigital Com petence Certificates in Com puter Hardware. The recipient school, Barti

ca Secondary School, is well known to Database staff, as one of them, Dr Alan Wood, spent two years working there. The students at the school and the dormitories will benefit greatly from the availability of computers. Some of the stu dents come from remote vil lages and travel two days to

reach school, living in the dor mitories during term-time. Some of the computers will

be located in the dormitories, which will allow these students to work on school projects and homework in the evenings. The remaining computers will be located in the main school for use by all students. David Hargreaves, from

Database, said: “We would like to thank everyone in volved in bringing this project to a successful conclusion. Our next project is already well under way as we prepare com puters for shipping to Damaturu, in Northern Nige ria. We are currently looking for assistance in shipping these computers to Nigeria - if you are able to help please contact Database.” This is just one of the excit

ing projects at the Database IT Training and Development Centre, on Henthorn Road. To find out more about the training opportunities and other activities available there, call 01200 425537 or visit the website www.data- base-clitheroe.org.uk Our pictures show the com

puters being shipped to a school in Guyana where they will give pupils a chance to use education as a route out of poverty, (s)
