Changes in recent times mean that new Headmaster Simon Corns and his team now welcome from the age of 3 through to 18 boys and girls whose parents wish them to benefit from

"a QEGS education".

Starting with the very youngest children, a QEGS education is about preparation for life. Teaching children in a happy, supportive and purposeful environment is, we believe, the

way to bring out the best in them.

Whether they join at 3,7,11,16, or somewhere in between, boys and girls are encouraged in all that they do, both in school and in the array of extra-curricular activities available

to them.

QEGS has a reputation, which it is keen to continue, for academic achievement and sporting success; but education at QEGS is also about respect for each other and the development of character and teamwork. These are attributes and skills that will serve our boys and girls well at University and in the careers they go on to pursue in the future. They are also the qualities that, we believe, make QEGS pupils stand out from the crowd.

War declared on litterbugs

LITTER BUGS in Ribble Valley are to get short shrift under tough new measures aimed at protecting the envi ronment. Ribble Valley Borough

Council is to use new powers under the Clean Neighbour hoods and Environment Act to tackle litter and abandoned vehicles. Armed with on-the-spot

fines ranging from £50 to £500, the council can now ask residents to tidy up their land and ask takeaway food out lets,' pubs and shops, to keep the street outside their prem ises litter-free. The Act also allows them to tackle nui sance parking, abandoned vehicles and noise pollution. Coun. Robert Thompson,

chairman of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s communi ty committee, said: “People want clean, safe and quiet neighbourhoods, and their view of how well the council is performing is strongly influ enced by how effectively it manages the environment. “Dropping litter and aban

doning vehicles in our coun tryside will no longer be toler ated and over the coming year there will be a concerted effort by the council to use its new powers extensively and effec tively.” The Clean Neighbourhoods

and Environment Act enables local authorities to act swiftly to keep public spaces clean and safe. Councils will be able to remove abandoned vehicles

immediately, ra th e r th an waiting until a notice has been served, as well issue on-the- spot fines for a range of litter, waste and vehicle offences. The Act also defines chew

ing gum and cigarette butts as l i t te r and anyone caught dropping these could be issued with a fixed penalty notice. One of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s central ambitions is to protect and enhance the environmental quality of its area. Pictured from the left are

Great day out for ramblers

A VISIT to a historic church proved an' in te re s tin g diversion during a recent walk by Clitheroe Ramblers. Nineteen ramblers se t off from

Glasson Dock along th e Glasson branch of the Lancaster Canal on a warm and sunny day. The canal was full of interest, with

swans, cygnets and coots. After the second lock, the route deviated from the canal to go past Thurnham Hall, the former home of the Dalton family. A short distance from the hall is the

Roman Catholic church, which was built on the Dalton’s land. After visiting the church and enjoy

ing th e refreshments on sale, the group returned to the canal, which was followed to its junction with the Lancaster Canal. From here the route went through

the fields, including a field of maize, which was difficult to walk through, to Cockerham After a lunch stop behind the vil

lage hall, the group followed footpaths past Cockerham church and through th e parachute centre, where they watched th e colourful parachutes coming down. T h en th ey walked along th e e s tu a ry to th e ruins of Cockersands Abbey. The chapter house has been pre

served because it was the mausoleum of the Dalton Family, but very little else remains. From there the Lancashire coastal

path was followed back to Glasson Dock. The walk was full of interest and

the warm weather made i t a very enjoyable day out.
