CLITHEROE’S cup joy continued on Tuesday night but if Peter Smith’s side are to be successful th is season th e y need a league win on Saturday. Harrogate Railway are
the visitors to Shawbridge, and the game will be the Blues’ last opportunity to gain three points before October, as FA Cup and UniBond Challenge Cup fixtures take precedence. Joint player-manager
Smith said: “We need a win, sim ple as th a t , we need the three points. “One win and another
a .
result after that and you’re soon climbing. “We’ve already played
less league games, with f ive, than some, so i t ’s impor tant th a t we g e t those three points.” Clitheroe entertain Pre
mier Division Colwyn Bay on Tuesday night in the Challenge Cup, before wel coming Spennymoor Unit ed in the next round of the FA Cup the following Sat urday.
Smith’s men progressed
in the FA Cup past Chor ley, coming through 210 minutes and penalties.
And the B lu e s boss
couldn’t praise the stamina of his players enough: “It • was a typical derby game and credit to the lads they didn’t crumbla Some peo p le don’t want to take penalties, but the five that did all stood up and came forward to say they want ed one, and I like that in a player. “There- were some glar
ing misses in Tuesday’s game and Sarge was the first to hold his hand up about his miss, but he held it together at the end. “You can say the same
about James Mann when he spilled their goal. After all his good work through the game, the ball rico cheted off him, b ut he made up for i t with tha t penalty save.” He added: “On Satur
day we showed the same character to come from behind with an all-round performance, but we know there are improvements to be made in the number of chances we create.” . Meanwhile, Paul Stans-
'
field has left the club, but the door is not shut: "Paul has a couple of issues with travelling He might come back, we’ll hate to sea ” Chris Ward showed his

displeasure at being substi tuted on Saturday, and if his injury doesn’t improve Smith will bring someone else in: “Chris has a ham string problem which is frustrating, and we’ve told him to give it two week’s rest with light training “Russ Clarke has been
injured and could feature Saturday, but I thought the two centre halves did very well. I’m pleased with Kieran Fle tcher as he ’s on ly 20 and he came through with shining colours. “Ryan Fisher was a
massive boost for us with his runs, and Sam Heap has hags and bags of pace. “Sam’s only 21 but he
will cause problems. He still has a bit to learn, but he took his goal well and is the ideal lad to throw on for the last 20 minutes. “Will Ex ton came on
Tuesday but he’s still not himself, and if Chris takes longer than expected, we may have to strengthen as we need to improve in that area.” • Blackburn Rovers

CRAIG Sargeson had the last laugh with the winning penalty in Tuesday’s arduous FA Cup replay against Chorley. Having missed a prime opportunity to
win th e game outright in 90 minutes with a miscued shot from six yards out, the Clitheroe winger smashed home the deciding spot kick before reeling away and celebrating with the bench. However, just like the game, and the
30 minutes of extra time that followed, the shoot-out was far from straight for ward. C h orley s tru ck home the ir f ir s t
through Eddie Stanford, before Antho ny Daniels made i t 1-1. Blues keeper James Mann looked as though he would be the hero of the hour when he saved Chorley’s second by Stephen Burke, and Joel Byrom made it 2-1. But John Osbourne opted out on a
run up for Clitheroe’s third kick, which Chorley stopper Phil Priestley proved equal to, and Chorley netted their next two, either side of a successful Russ McKenna effort, to see it all square at three apiece. However, pressure got the better of
former Burnley midfielder Joel Pilking- ton, as he put the Magpies' final kick wide of the post to leave Sargeson to seal the deal, scoop the £2,250 in prize money and earn a home tie with Spen nymoor United in the Second Qualify ing Round. The two teams couldn’t be separated
on Saturday a t V icto ry Park, as the Blues came from behind twice through a Byrom p en a lty and a Peter Smith equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw and this replay.
.
So all square at 0-0 after 90 minutes, despite b oth teams having p len ty of
opportunity to take the game, it proved a long night as the Shawbridge side had to come from b eh in d a third t im e through substitute Sam Heap to force penalties. Chorley had looked the livelier side in
the first half as they had more time on the ball, made more of their possession and looked hungrier than the Blues as they chased and fought harder. The introduction of Daniels towards
the end of the half added some fire to the Clitheroe midfield and chances appeared
in the second half. The visitors went close with a shot
against the post on 51 minutes before Sargeson had the miss of the season 15 minutes later. With time and space to poke the ball past Priestley, the ball spun awkwardly off his boot. Stanford proved a threat throughout
. Saturday's game with his free kicks and strikes from distance and this encounter proved no different. Gregg Anderson, Keiran Fletcher and
Adam Koslowski were exceptional at the back to keep Chorley at bay, but they could do nothing when a 30-yard free kick struck through the box came back off the chest of Mann for Chorley to net on the rebound in the first period of extra time. Clitheroe didn't give up, and a period
of sustained pressure in Chorley's half when the two team s swapped ends a ' third time rewarded the Blues with an equaliser. Byrom floated a 25-yard ball in to the
box and Heap got on the end of it to nod past Priestley and take the game the full distance. Clitheroe: Mann, Koslowski, McKen
na, Fletcher, Anderson, Fisher (Exton), J. Osbourne, P. Osbourne (D an ie ls ) , Jackson (Heap), Byrom, Sargeson. ADRIAN CAPSTICK
