VILLAGERS and council officials have welcomed the opening of Whalley’s new-look

Adult Centre. Following a £70,000 facelift,

the impressive facility now boasts a new state-of-the-art IT suite with 20 work stations, a fully-fit ted reception area on the ground floor, a new kitchen, and full access for disabled people to com ply with the Disability Discrimi nation Act standards. The centre was officially

opened by Mr Eric Ronnan, Whalley resident and chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was accompanied by Ribble

Valley Borough councillors, along with staff from the pre-school, Whalley Primary School, District Partnership Office and East Lan cashire Adult Learning. The centre is a listed building

and currently held in a trust for use for educational purposes by the residents of Whalley and sur rounding areas, principally for

adult education classes, but also used as a pre-school nursery cen tre and by other local community groups. Mr Steve Hailstone, principal

at Lancashire County Council's East Lancashire Adult Learning said: “The new facilities at the Adult Centre are fantastic and will really benefit adult learners in Whalley and East Lancashire and the wider community." Lancashire Adult Learning is

the county council's adult educa tion service offering

a wide-range of classes for adults of all ages and abili ties across the county. Our picture

FOR the fourth year we are joining forces with the Salvation Army for our

annual Toy Appeal. The aim is simple - to

bring the spirit of the festive season to as many families who find themselves in diffi cult circumstances as possi ble. In the past our appeal has

brought Christmas cheer to more than iOO Ribble Valley children - last year more th an 144 received special gifts given by you, readers of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times. The task is very simple -

we want to provide children of all ages, from babies to teenagers, with a main pres ent, a book, a soft toy and a stocking filler. Capt. Elizabeth Smith, of

th e Salvation Army, Clitheroe, said: “Christmas is the one time that you really want to be able to do some thing for your children and some of the parents tha t we help dread Christmas, but gifts given through this appeal make it all right for them.” Any present, no m a tte r

how big or small, must be brand new. Said Capt. Smith: “The joy of unpacking toys from their boxes is part of the magic and excitement of Christmas. For most of these children their presents will come from charity shops. “The Toy Appeal really does bring a lot of joy. A lot

of these children live with second hand possessions all the time so this is one oppor tu n i ty when we can give them something brand new. I t does not have to cost a lot, but it brings so much joy to the children and relief to the parents. This appeal really does have an impact on peo ple’s lives.” Previously, as well as help

ing families known personal ly to them, the Salvation Army has also donated gifts via Homestart, HARV, social services, the probation serv ice and the Ribble Valley Mental Health team. However, following the clo

sure of the Homestart organ isation locally, Capt. Smith is keen to hear from as many families who are in need of help as possible. Parents can either contact her on 0770 9351394 or leave a written note at either the Salvation Army shop in Lowergate or a t the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times office in King Street. Said Capt. Smith: “We do

not want to miss any chil dren in families th a t are struggling financially. Any one can leave us a written note including the names and ages of the children, as well as an address and contact details. If you are unable to ring out either Lt Brenda Wise or myself will ring

hack.” Toys will he collected from

now until Thursday, Decem ber 13th. They can be brought to the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times’ office

or taken to the Salvation Army shop. • On Christmas Day the

Salvation Army will also be providing a special festive lunch for Valley residents who would otherwise be on their own. Anyone wanting to go

along to the lunch needs to make sure the Salvation

Army has their name and contact details. Said Capt. Smith: “ Although there are some people that won’t come, I do not like the idea of any one being on their own on Christmas Day. This lunch is not to do with age or with being male or female, i t is about being on your own and is there for anyone.”
