THE Mayor of Clitheroe, Coun. David Berryman, lays a wreath at Clitheroe’s war memorial. (T111107/12d)
Veterans ought to be considered, and given due dignity
AFTER attending the Remembrance Service with my father, now aged 85,1 wondered if anyone had considered remem bering “them” - the vet erans of the war. Each year they climb
the sloping s tre e ts of Clitheroe, resting to draw breath, then continue up the steep slopes to the war 'memorial to watch the wreaths being laid there, after setting off in plenty of time to com pose themselves for the service. Surely we should be
able to have some trans port laid on for these peo ple who fought in the wars, a minute to remem- ber them fighting not
In this way they would
not need to set off for the service hours before and stand freezing, waiting for the rest of the town to arrive. Perhaps Clitheroe
deserves to remember not only those who died while fighting, but also those who came back to face families broken by the war, and give them a lift to the war memorial. We will remember
only the war, but also the slopes of Clitheroe. Perhaps a minibus
from the Market Place would be an idea for those men and women sporting their medals of courage.

was observed outside Clitheroe Town Hall, before a procession made its way to St Michael and St
war veterans and members of the public then made their way to the war memorial in the grounds of Clitheroe Castle for the annual lay ing of the poppy wreaths. Due to the work currently being
carried out at the Castle, special arrangements had been made to enable the procession to make its way to the memorial. Among the famous citations
given during the morning were the Kohima Epitaph: “When you go
home tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow, we gave our today,” and Laurence Binyon’s Exhorta tion: “They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years con demn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remem ber them.” Acts of remembrance were also
held at other venues across the Rib- ble Valley honouring those th a t gave their lives in the two world wars and other conflicts. For more details see our district pages.
