Injury halts

big final

THE Clitheroe and Dis trict Mid-week Cricket League held its finals on Sunday at Clitheroe Cricket Club. The Bradlow Cup

Final was abandoned due to a serious injury to a Sabden player who required an ambulance journey to hospital. In the second final,

Rimington and Low Moor contested a 36-over game. Asked to bat first, Low

Moor made steady progress with M. Coulter and P. Craig who both scored 25 before suc cumbing to the tight Rimington bowling. Low Moor soon lost

more wickets and were eventually all put for 101. John Davies was the

pick of the bowlers with 2-12 from six overs. • In reply, Rimington

made steady progress, taking the total to 51 before losing their first wicket. Three more wickets

quickly followed which put pressure on the remaining batsmen. . However, S. Whalley

with 32 retired, then S. Graham and A. Corma- ck, saw Rimington home with 14 balls to spare.. League treasurer Mike

Moss handed over the Mike’s Sportsworld Challenge Cup to Rim- ington’s captain Dave Binns.

Chatburn suffer

setback

CHATBURN Cricket Club lost by 58 runs against Ingrow St John’s on Saturday. Wickets were taken by

Andrew Booth (3-49), Rod Booth (2-23), Neil Cartledge (1-22) and Andy Lambert (1-28) as the Yorkshire side posted 211-

8. In reply, Cartledge was

chief run-maker for the villagers with 33 not out, ahead of David Lakin (30), John Reynolds (22), Paul Craig (14) and Rod Booth (12) as Chat- bum finished on 153-8. The seconds suffered a

disappointing six-wicket defeat against Glusburn. - The locals batted first

and were all out for 59 in a very poor batting per formance. Ashley Bennett top-

scored with 15. In reply, Glusburn

cantered to an easy vic tory, despite losing four wickets. Chris Mulhearn was

t \ \

the pick of the bowlers with 3-28. •

Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Old Trafford treat

TEN lucky youngsters from Clitheroe were given the experience of a lifetime when they were invited to Old Trafford. The Cobras cricketers were part of the on-field entertainment during the interval in the England against India One Day International. The lads were asked to perform their

cricketing skills in front of the Members’ Pavilion at the famous ground, and were fortunate enough to meet hard-hitting bats man Dimitri Mascarenhas while out in the middle. The all-rounder was on the sidelines with

a hand injury, but returned to the side at the Oval last week to hit five consecutive sixes off the final five balls of England's innings in the sixth ODI against India, before taking 3-23 off 10 overs as England

won the one-day series 4-3 at Lords on Sat

urday. The Cobras', who were accompanied by

coaches John Dean and Farouk Hussain, were given a further treat when they met England greats Sir Ian Botham and Devon Malcolm. Cobras Chairman Farouk Hussain said:

"It was a fantastic occasion. I am sure the lads will remember it for the rest of their lives. “Not many people get the chance to play

at Old Trafford, especially in front of the pavilion, and the day was rounded off per fectly by meeting such famous former play ers. “Just to make it a perfect day for the

lads, England won a great game by three wickets!” (s)

Batting lets Read down at double

READ’S batting let down their impressiye display in the field as they slipped to a 12-run defeat at Earby on Saturday. In almost a mirror-image of

Sunday’s derby loss at home to Padiham, Will Driver lost the toss before being asked to field. And as on Sunday, Read bowled

out their opponents for a more . than gettable target, only to fail with the bat in reply. On Sunday, bar professional

Hanif ur Rehman and Chris Astin, the Read side were all under 19, and it was another inex perienced line-up at the Apple- garth, although former Colne wicketkeeper David Swarbrick

added considerable Lancashire League know how. Driver, the first change bowler,

ripped through the heart of the Earby innings, taking 6-49 off 16.1 overs, as a prelude to his derby five-for, while former Low- erhouse man Chris Astin also claimed three scalps as the home side were all out for just 134 inside the 42nd over. Driver clean bowled three of his

victims, including top scorer Sam Munns, who made 34, while he trapped Adam Yates in front and had Chris Walton stumped for 16. However, the key wicket of pro

lific professional Ali Azmat went to Astin, who had the Pakistani

Clitheroe see off strugglers

CARBON copy batting efforts by Peter Dibb and professional Michael Papps, followed by wickets from Andrew Pearce and Josh Marquet, saw Clitheroe Cricket Club to a 56-run victory over Oswaldtwistle Immanuel on Saturday. Sunday also brought

success by 38 runs at Barnoldswick, thanks to Dibb’s 80 not out and notable knocks by Papps (65) and Dan Glover (34). However, it was the per

sistent bowling of Mark Hargreaves that made the biggest mark on the home side, as he claimed 7-65 off 14.5 overs to see Barnoldswick all out for 196. Saturday’s game at

Chatburn Road saw Clitheroe post 173-8, large ly due to 67 runs apiece by Papps and Dibb. The former struck nine

boundaries, and the latter five, but Dibb also made it over the ropes with four big sixes. The rest of the order, bar

opener Malcolm Scott (14), fell for single figures to call for a decent per formance from Clitheroe’s bowlers after the interval. Pearce led the way with 4-34 as he ripped out the

middle order for two ducks and low single figures. Marquet was next to the

fore with his 3-21 as he claimed both openers in Imran Ahmed (15) and Anthony Dignan (5), who were both caught by Papps. In fact, the best

Oswaldtwistle managed was 22 by Oliver Clare, and he formed part of Harg reaves 2-41. Sunday saw a similar

pattern of play as again Clitheroe opened the bat ting, but posted a bigger score of 234-4. Papps (65), Dibb (89 not

out), Glover (34), Daniel Turner (15), Scott (13) and Carl Palmer (10) all con tributed, as Bamoldswick’s bowlers' had little success. In reply, the West

Craven hosts saw sizable efforts with the bat from middle-order batsman Luke Hodgson (77), cap tain David Scothern (38) and Shaukat Sheraz (21 not out), as Hargreaves and Marquet (3-60) worked their way through to pull Barnoldswick up short at 196 all out. Clitheroe’s final Ribbles

dale League Cricket game of the season is at home to Padiham on Saturday, wickets pitched at 1 p.m.

ace caught by Kyle O’Connor for 13.

Only Stephen Pickles (17),

Nigel Hodge (18) and skipper Stephen Hipgrave (13 not out) could join Munns, Walton and Azmat in double figures, and at tea, Read must have been confi dent of turning over their hosts. Those hopes were given a major

boost as Read’s reply got off to a solid start, and despite losing Elliott Artingstoll for 17 and pro fessional Hanif ur Rehman for 31, both bowled by Azmat, the Whal ley Road side looked destined for maximum points at 52-2. Driver anchored the innings as he put together a knock of 40, but

he found little in the way of sup port as Azmat and Walton ripped through the order. The scorecard turned into a tale

of woe, with only Joe Marshall (13) able to join his skipper in dou ble figures as Read were knocked over for 122 with two balls remain ing and 13 required to win. The following day against Padi

ham, a combined team effort saw the Arbories men reap success thanks to Philip Metcalfe (31), Umar Saddique (13), Kevin Hitchon (10), Anthony Hall (13), Naveed Ashraf (11) and a late 20 by Duncan Hall. The team rattled off 147-9 in what at first proved a slow start.

Siddique exited at just 10-1,

bowled by Read’s Elliot Lowes for nine, but steady partnerships fol lowed as the side crept over centu ry mark. Regular dismissals were made

by Driver who took the most wickets with 5-40, followed by two apiece by professional Hanif Ur Rehman (2-47) and Lowes (2-24). But the Whalley Road side

hadn’t got it in them to make up the runs as Usher, Saddique, Kashif Siddique (2-6) and Ashraf (2-0) ripped through the order for just 78 all out. Read round their season off on Saturday at home to Ribblesdale Wanderers.

Whalley to Wanderers end on high bounce back

WHALLEY look as though they are going to finish the season on a high, judging by their performances at the weekend. . Victory at Settle by 31

runs was followed by a 77- run win at home to Baxen- den on Sunday. Captain Martin Davies’

men had Neil Cordingley (50), Lee Kearsley (35) and professional Bradman Ediriweera (24) to thank on Saturday as the side posted 177 all out, avoiding where they could Settle’s profes sional Jeevantha Kulatunga (4-31) and Edward Read (3-60). Cordingley’s 50 came off

70 balls, and featured six boundaries and a six before exiting to Read. In reply, Settle made 146

all out thanks to run mak ers Tim Green (47), Neil Heseltine (25) and Andrew Davidson (23), as Whalley’s Sri Lankan paid man Ediri weera took 3-25, aided in the pursuit of victory by Declan Fitzhenry (2-46), David O’Neill (1-17) and Cordingley (1-49). The following day, at

home to Baxenden, Ediri weera produced the goods • again with the ball as he claimed 5-15 to see Whalley home in the second innings.

RIBBLESDALE Wan derers got off to a poor start in last weekend’s penultimate weekend of Ribblesdale League games at Great Harwood, but fired back with a 159-run victory at home to Earby on Sunday. The Church Meadow

Neil Cordingley And with 3-42 from

O’Neill and 2-23 by Cord ingley, Whalley took Bax enden apart for just 93 all out. Earlier, the locals posted

170-9 thanks to the com bined efforts of top-scoring all-rounder Ediriweera (67). Kearsley (24), Cordingley (34 not out), Davies (18) and John Rain (13). Ediriweera faced 82 balls

and struck seven bound aries for his total, as Whal ley proved just too powerful for the title challengers, whose slip up gifted Black burn Northern the title with one game left to go. Whalley’s final game of

the season is at Great Har wood on Saturday, wickets pitched at 1 p.m.

side lost their first game by 41 runs. Terry Braithwaite topped the bowling with 4- 42, and professional Joe Scuderi was chief scorer with an opening 32, just pipping the middle-order 31 supplied by Stephen Kerr, as Harwood’s Peter Sleep (4-37) and Paul Newton (5- 66) reduced the locals to 143 all out. Sunday saw an impres

sive 90 runs from Scuderi and 92 from Alistair Marsh as Ribblesdale posted 237-4 against Earby. Craig Hall contributed

23 and single figures from Lloyd (9), Martin Briggs (7 not out) and Joe Bun- yan (6 not out) completed the outing. Only Earby professional

Ali Azmat (2-68) and Stephen Hipgrave (2-49) had any luck with the ball.

Joe Scuderi In reply, Earby were all

out for 78 as Braithwaite * impressed with a further four wickets (4-31), S accompanied this time by ° 3-25 from David Howard and 1-18 from Scuderi. £ As a result, Earby’s _

innings was reduced to a ® handful of low double fig ures and a late order col lapse. The best efforts were

seen from Sam Munns (19), Chris Walton (12), • ^ Adam Yates and Stephen ® Pickles (10).

New team’s flying start

Colne.............................3 Rimington Under 12s .8 RIMINGTON picked up where they left off last sea son with Clitheroe Wolves with a convincing win in their first game for the new team. In the first half Riming

ton took full advantage of the slope, and the lightning pace of Elliot Kay struck as early as the second minute when he ran from his own half to pick up a through- ball and confidently push it past the keeper. Four minutes later the

visitors doubled their lead as Nikolai Petriaho found the back of the net. Kay found the net twice

more, before the Colne defence found its feet. After the break, Colne

pulled a goal back, but this inspired Kay to make two long, uphill runs to net two more goals in a minute. James Barnes and Cal-

lum Sykora missed glaring opportunities, while Tom Perris struck the ball wide of the right hand post from close range. The slope of the pitch

finally took effect midway through the half as Colne scored twice in a minute, but Kay rounded off his man-of-the-match perform ance with two goals in the last five minutes.
