‘Danger’ road claims another biker’s life
A MOTORCYCLIST died following a crash on the A682 on Monday. The accident happened
near the Ribble Valley boundary sign just past the Moorcock Inn, Gis- burn Road at 2 p.m. The man has been
named as Christopher Lees (40), of Nelson. I t is believed th a t he
lost control on a bend and was thrown from his bike. He suffered serious
chest and stomach injuries and was taken to
Burnley General Hospital where he later died. The road was this year
again named as one of the country’s most dangerous. Those living along it
have, for many years, called for speed calming measures to be imple mented. Police this week erected
signs appealing for wit nesses to contact them. • The A682 from
Howgill Lane to Gisbiirn is currently closed for bridge repair work.

Playing project is proving a big hit
A RECIPE for taking childs’ play out to Ribble Valley villages is proving a runaway success. Earlier this year, Rib-
blesdale Children’s Centre successfully bid for fund ing from Pathfinder in Practice to enable services to be taken out to satellite villages. Various events have
been put on a t different venues and the initial response has been extremely positive with some 60 families taking part. Now a newsletter has
been produced outlining the project’s success, with particular reference to schemes such as “Rumble in the Jungle” - five, two- hour family music sessions which utilised community transport to take families
to Brabins Endowed School, Chipping, joining local children. “Drakes and Duck
lings” gives fathers a chance to spend quality time with their children during environmentally themed activities for chil dren up to eight years old. Gisburn was the venue
for a fairytale crafts ses sion, there was “messy play” at Chipping Village Hall, family fun at Dun- sop Bridge, and outings to the Butterfly House in Williamson Park and, in conjunction with Sure Start Hyndbum, a visit to the Space Centre, Accrington. Still to come are “Wee
nie Workout Sessions” in Slaidburn Village Hall every Thursday during term time, starting today.
£27,000 car stolen
A VW GOLF valued at £27,000 has been stolen from Waddington. Police officers believe
the terraced property in Clitheroe Road was tar geted specifically because of the vehicle. The blue Golf R32 - a
sporty model with this year’s registration - was taken sometime between 7 p.m. on Sunday and 7 a.m. on Monday. Officers believe
thieves entered the house via an insecure
rear window before stealing the car keys and a wallet. The thieves then
made off with the vehi cle. The wallet was later
recovered from the yard. PC Chris Seed urged
other Ribble Valley resi dents to ensure their homes are secure before they go to bed, with all external doors and win dows shut and locked.

Amanda bags a boy band
RADIO presenter Amanda Townsend has bagged a boy band of the future to add to her ever-growing list of celebrity interviewees. Amanda, who in the past has
interviewed McFly, Dale Win- ton, Colleen Nolan, Natasha Bedingfield and “Dr Who” himself, David Tennant, in her role as a volunteer presenter with local hospital radio, has met members of the group Bil- liam, who this year have been the supporting act for super groups Westlife and Girls Aloud. Amanda, who has only been
working as a volunteer for four months, also met Gareth Gates and the Sheila’s Wheels adver
tising girls at the switch-on of Blackpool Illuminations earli er this month. “That was the best night of
my job so far and although having wine with a host of celebrities was fantastic, I still went and stood with my fami ly to watch the lights being turned on,” said Amanda. “This is the best voluntary
job I have ever had and i t ’s such a joy to work with a fan tastic bunch of people knowing that we can bring a little bit of pleasure to someone who is ill in bed.” Pictured seeing s ta rs is

in December. To celebrate, more than 60 members and guests trav elled from Clitheroe to Carlisle on Sunday, courtesy of Northern Rail, joining a packed final DalesRail trip of the season. With balloons and bunting,
there was a festive atmosphere on board with Ribble Valley’s Mayor Coun. Mrs Doreen Taylor and her consort, husband Gordon, joining those, many of whom have devot ed years to the service and its con-
tinuation. Peter Moore has been chairman
since December 1986 and this week recalled the first meeting in St Mary’s Church Lower Hall. It resulted in the formation of a steering committee and then, at a follow-up meeting at the Swan and Royal Hotel, a full committee. The aim was to restore passenger serv ices between Blackburn and
Clitheroe, and ultimately, onwards to Hellifield and beyond. Current ly, Ribble Valley Rail is supporting any future plans for the doubling of the line from Bolton to Black burn. Local and national politicians
were intensely lobbied and Lan cashire County Council subse quently established a scheme to re introduce trains on the line. To raise the profile of the campaign, RVR members organised Ribble Valley Rail Days with specially chartered trains between Preston and Clitheroe, or Blackpool and Skipton. The p art played by the
DalesRail trains was extremely significant. They ran
from.the North West to Carlisle on summer weekends, securing the legality of the line and ensuring that it was included in the then threatened Settle and Carlisle line public inquiry. Public opinion was taken into consideration and the line was eventually saved. In May 1994, the then Regional Railways re introduced a full passenger service to Clitheroe. Rail user group comes of age
Steve Butcher joined Ribble Valley Rail on Sunday and paid tribute to its hard work and determination. In a souvenir booklet produced
by Brian Haworth and Nigel Kirby, Mr Butcher added that he hoped to spend many more years working “with these extraordinary people.” Prior to lunch at Carlisle’s Lakes
Court Hotel, Mr Moore praised Northern, describing it as the best rail operator the rail group has worked with, and added that he hoped the company would shortly be given a 15-year extension of its current franchise. With growing numbers of com
muters using the Ribble Valley Line and freight services shortly set to expand, it has become an award-winning example of a suc cessful partnership between pas sionate volunteers and forward thinking rail operators. Pictured at Carlisle prior to the
return journey, Ribble Valley Rail stalwarts Heather Fairclough, chairman Peter Moore, .Teresa Haworth, Kath Wilson, Gordon Wilson and Brian Haworth, front. (CR090907/2)
Arab TV company filming in town
A FILM crew has been out and about in Clitheroe for the past few weeks put ting together a documentary about the local Muslims’ struggle to obtain per mission to establish a mosque in the
■town. Arabic media organisation Al-Jazeera
International has commissioned docu mentary maker Paul Sapin to make the film. Mr Sapin examines the history of the
building in Lowergate which began life as a Methodist chapel, became a facto ry and is now to be home to the town’s mosque. Resident Sheraz Arshad speaks about
the bid for a place of worship, the 30- year campaign and plans for the future of the building. It is believed that some of those who opposed the bid are also taking part. Footage has been taken around the
town and at the recent Last Night of the Proms. The documentary will be screened as part of the television com pany’s acclaimed “Witness” series of films. A former resident of New York, Mr
Sapin currently lives in Manchester, but spent a number of years in Nelson. The Clitheroe Muslims’ campaign to
obtain planning permission for a mosque in, what is perceived to be a tra ditional English market town is, he believes, a forerunner to others through out the country.. Fund-raising is going on apace to
raise money to convert the former chapel into a place of worship.
