good effect, and their cross es caused continuous prob lems for the home defence. Among other goalscorers,

Harrison and Glarkson gave their plucky opponents plenty to think about in what was the Wolves’ first foray in this competition.

Clitheroe Wolves Under 11s R e d ..................... . . .3 R is h to n .......................... 0 TWO goals from WUl Milli gan and a third from Ryan Gattermole saw Wolves extend their unbeaten run to the new season with a solid result against Rishton. This was followed by a

hard won 1-1 draw against Barrowford Geltic, which again saw Gattermole find the back of the net. Another tight game

against Great Harwood fol lowed, where Wolves had the best of the first haF and scored through Andrew Tomlinson. Harwood came back in the second haF and grabbed an equaliser. Wolves Under 8 s .............4 Great Harwood Rovers .1 WOLVES maintained then-

unbeaten start to their first competitive season with two fine results. Their first challenge

ended in a draw against dose neighbours Langho. Glitheroe went behind

early in the second half, only to equalise through a magnificent strike from Elliot Watson. Then Sunday’s visit to

Great Harwood Rovers saw the team take an early grip on the game before finishing convincing 4-1 wiimers. Goals came from James

Scorah, Gharlie Dewhurst, Frankie Jackson and a thunderous str ike from defender Owen Jackson. The Under 7s have now

played three games in their first season of competitive football.

Having trained hard they

have had chance to pit their skills against other young ster in the area. They have won against

Knuzden Juniors 6-1, drawn against Mellor Juniors 1-1 and lost by the odd goal against Langho. Goalscorers were Joe WF-

son (2), Sam Pickles (2), Joe Briggs (2), Harrison Maffia and Harry Gollinge. Pemberton Shooters ..0 Whalley Under 15 .........3 WHALLEY began their season with a comfortable LFA Trophy mn. From the start Whalley

were the better team, miss ing a chance in the f irs t

■minute, as they dominated midfield. Referee’s star man Liam Kinney rounded the keeper

to open the scoring, before turning provider a few min utes later, slipping the ball through for Rick Lang to add a second. WhaUey settled the game late in the haF with a Sam Jennings penalty. Readstone Under 15s . . .6 Wilpshire Wanderers . . .1 GAMERON OIDonnell hit a hat-trick as United started the season in style. George Frelich, Sam Schofield and man-of-the-match Elliot Bywater were also on target. Readstone Under 15 Girls 6 Thornton Cleveieys......... 0 NATALIE Gassidy and Zara Pollard scored two apiece as Readstone got their campaign off to a flier. Niamh McGarthy and

player-of-the-match Gabby Preugsehat completed the scoring.

Readstone Under 10s. . .0 Brierfield Celtic Black. .4 UNITED lost out in their first competitive match, but were unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Oliver Dug dale was the pick of the Readstone players. The side also lost 7-0 to Pendle For est, which somewhat flat tered Pendle as United played some good football at times. Gurtis Moss was man-of-the-match. • Readstone Under Os. . . .1 Brierfield C e lt ic ............ 3 TOM Bridge’s goal wasn’t enough to prevent United going down to defeat. The sides were level at 1-

1 a t half-time, but Geltic netted twice af ter the break. Lewis Simpson was Unit

ed’s star man.

Waddington relaxed and enjoyed playing a combina tion of short and long pass ing football.Harrison scored his second after a fine move, set up by player-boss Adrian Hirst. bean almost scored froni

the resulting kick-off with a powerful header, then super sub Nick Laxton shot into the top of the net after good work by Fletcher. With time running out,

Waddington allowed Bradley more of the play, and this resulted in a 80th- minute penalty. - In the dying seconds of

the match, the excellent Lloyd drilled hard and low after good team work, start ing from Peter Dugdale. : This was a great morale

boosting performance that gives the team a solid plat form. Manager Hirst would like

to thank match sponsor Read Caravans and shirt sponsor Seven Exclusive Menswear. / Their next game is on Sat urday at home against Settle

took the lead, this time thanks to a rare goal from right back Tom Hall. He cut in from the right

and despatched the ball from 30 yards with his left foot.

Once again Stacksteads

equalised thanks to some poor defending. Rimington once again

piled forward and got the deserved third goal with Joe McTear delicately side-foot ing the ball home. All that occurred in the

first half and the second saw little created. Rimington thought they

had done enough to earn the three points. However, Stacksteads had

the final word when a strik er pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box, turned and struck the ball past Anderson. Manager Jason Farmer

was distraught at the lack lustre effort put in and demands more for the tough fixture against Colne on Sat urday. Clilheroe Lions..............6 Em b sa y ..........................0 CHRISTOPHE Pinard scored four goals as the Lions regained their pride on Thursday, after losing to local rivals WFC Clitheroe earlier in the week. They bounced back

emphatically 3vith a 6-0 ■vic tory against an Embsay side th a t were totally shell shocked at Roefield.

With Pinard back in the

side, the Lions looked far sharper in attack, and his hard work paid off. Manager Cengiz Avci

opened the scoring as he slid in at the back post to get the Lions off to a quick start. This only fuelled the

Lions’ hunger, as captain James Clegg and man-of- the-match Stephen Gaugh- aii got a firm grip in the middle of the park, and set a furious tempo for the rest of; the match.

^.JDespite Embsay^s best;

efforts,;tne:LTons rarely looked in trouble, with debu

tant defender Ewan Latham striking up a fine relation-: ship with Matt Day, com manding the back four excel lently to ensure th’eyplayed' a high and attacking line.' Paul Clegg \yas a t the

heart of the second goal as; he bombed down the right hand, side, linking up with Avci to produce the first of Pinards goals. Shortly after, Pinard scored his second with a fine header to enter half-time with a three-goal cushion. The Lions produced much

of the same after the break as Conti and Holgate linked up well to give Pinard his hat-trick. At this point, the striker

was on fire, and he soon pounced on a mistake to score his fourth goal and the Lions’ fifth. Holgate scored the final

goal, taking his chance excel lently after being set up by Pinard, and Gaughan came close towards the eiid, but his chip wasn’t enough to clear the keeper. The result was marred,

however, as heroic defender Day was carried off the pitch after a horrendous 50- 50 challenge, severely open- ing up his shin, an injury which required stitches. Langho ...........................2 Hurst Green .............4. .3 HURST Green produced an excellent perforinance as they went some way to avenging last season’s cup final defeat. With the home side miss

ing the dangerous tr io of Sharpies, Welch and Robert son the opportunity was there to gain an important three points against a poten tial title rival. The game started in sub

dued fashion but the visitors began to impose themselves and took the lead on 15

'- at the backfand were always : lobMhg to get wingers Tip ton and Taylor going down the flanks. Langho were reduced to

long-range efforts which never really troubled keeper . Addicott. , Green leapt out the blocks

at the s ta r t of the second half and were rewarded with aniihmediategoal. Young flicked on a

throughball.which found Walker who cleverly .drew the home keeper and nudged the ball past him. I t seemed like the three

points'were all but, theirs as the back four of Goupe, Phil Walker, Piper and Bamber looked impenetrable, but the champions’ habit of conced ing strange goals continued on 70 minutes as a hopeful, high ball into the visitors box looped over Addicott into the goal and gave Lang ho hope of a point. The visitors immediately

hit straight back. Sub Fletcher released fel

low sub Simpson who beat the home keeper to the ball and, as the ball trickled towards goal, Alex Young stretched to make sure of the score. Hurst Green should have

made it four as they continu ally found gaps behind the Langho rearguard, Wilkin son blazing over with just the keeper to beat. Langho, seemingly beat

en, still managed a consola tion with yet another bizarre' goal but Ilurst Green man aged to see the last five min utes out and took an excel lent three points to continue their winning run.

Grindleloti....................4 Long Lee J u n io r s ..........0 IN near perfect conditions, this early season top-of-the- table clash saw league lead ers Grindleton comprehen sively beat second placed Long Lee.' The visitors came with

the sole intention of intimi dating their opponents, and soon found themselves three goals behind before the break. Striker Scott Fielding got

the home side off the mark with a header from short range after the opposing keeper spilled a comfortable shot.

: - Fellow striker Martin

Gbwey then made it two with a blistering free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box, which the keeper found too hot to handle. As the away side’s frustra

tion mounted, they took it out on the home side, who, to their credit, rose above the over zealous challenges and tried to play the football the conditions deserved to add a third before the break, with Fielding netting his second 3vith a tap in after a shot from Gowey. In the second half,

Grindleton continued to play the better football, 3vith the midfield pairing of Rick and Darren Barrow taking total control in the centre of the park. The back four remained

solid under pressure, in par ticular Darren Jackson, who had a faultless performance at centre haF. And with Long Lee still

intent on kicking their way to victory, Grindleton wrapped up all three points with their fourth goal 20 minutes from the end. Mau;ot-the-match Gowey

claimed his brace with a neat header into the top left corner from a whipped-in cross. But not content with the

four goals, Grindleton pressed forward, and substi tute Martin Dobson struck the woodwork with a fierce shot. .

against Stanley Street Glarets a t Wilson's, the below-strength Whalley side trailed 3-1 at half-time. However, a superb second

half recovery saw them run out 8-3 winners. Liam Hill- Parker and Jamie Enefer scored twice, with the lat ter’s stunning 35-yard strike the goal of the game. Liam Porter also found

the net before a late Darren Fothergill hat-trick complet ed the \vin. Unfortunately, Dog were

unable to build on their opening win as they surpris ingly lost 2-0 to Stanhill WMG at King George’s. They never got into their

stride, and their high-tempo passing game, an important factor in their recent success, was rarely in evidence. Stanhill took lead from a

set-piece midway through the second haF, and doubled their lead \vith a late break away effort. Manager Simon Kerins

was disappointed with the Stanhill result, but remains upbeat regarding his side’s prospects: He said: "We were hoping

for nothing less than two wins from our opening two games, but now we have to dust ourselves down and get back to winning ways in our next match." Kerins also passed on his

team’s best 3vishes to former Glitheroe and Accrington Stanley legend Ghris Grimshaw, who has been hospitalised recently: He added: "Grimmy is a

character and well known to most of the team. We are all sad to learn he has been poorly and wish him a speedy recovery."

■ from back page ■ the right side, allowing Dean Gritchlow to pick his spot past Glarke. But even though the

introduction of player- manager Peter Smith for the final 20 minutes gave the side much-needed width, th e closest Glitheroe came to anoth er goal was Sargeson heading over the bar. Clilheroe ............... . .1 FCUM. . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 FLOODLIGHT failure brought Glitheroe’s home game against FG United of Manchester to a pre mature end on Tuesday, night. With ju s t under ah

hour played of this cohit: petitive fixture, and 95l| fans in attendance, half, the lights in the ground went out-whenthe Blues looked keen foftheir first league -victory of the sea son.

• United took the lead

on 37 minutes with a well-taken strike by Rory Patterson, before Graig Sargeson equalised just before the break. The Bury-based side

were a threat, very quick on the attack and dan gerous on the counter, b u t the Blues had the rhost chances of the first haF thanks to a spright ly Peter Smith. The Glitheroe player-

manager put players haF his age in the shade, bely ing his 42 years to push the side forward at every opportunity as he used the right wing to full advantage. Glitheroe’s Ghris Ward

pinged a header over the bar when Smith got the better of left back Shauh Roscoe. And Ward had a good

shout for a penalty when he turned r ight back Matty Taylor and was tripped in the box, only to see it waved away. Patterson and Jerome;

Wright proved tricky in: the United attack, con necting in a flowing move with Nicky P la t t that, saw the former rifle past James Mann. Glitheroe's equaliser

came courtesy of some Joel Byrom trickery. The forward weaved his way; past two challenges only to be intercepted by Tay lor, the ball spilled, and Sargeson was on hand to tuck home a t the near post. But at 9 p.m., less than

15 minutes into the sec ond haF, the lights went out, leaving the result very much in the balance as the club now await a league decision; on a rematch.
