WINNERS and officials at the Shireburn Trophy presentation, (s) Tennis club promoted

CLITHEROE’S Open B team were promoted to the Second Division of the East Lancashire Tennis League for the first time on Saturday. They defeated nearest rivals ■

Towneley 3-2 to secure runners- up spot behind Burnley B. And it was a combination of

the team’s oldest and youngest players, Peter Bell and Dominic Parrott, that won the vital points to see them home. Captain John Calvert was

delighted with the result and the team’s best-ever season: "We have a great squad, and over the season have used 12 different players, which says a

lot for the strength in depth at the club. “We only lost one match all

season, and that was at champi ons Burnley, but we did beat them at Chatburn Road, and we look forward to playing them again at a higher level next season". The Open A side finished

runners-up in the Second Divi sion for the fourth successive year, despite another 4-0 victo ry on Saturday, at Crosshill from Blackburn. Skipper Derek Parrott dropped himself from the team for this final league match of the season, leaving Steve Pym

Clitheroe hold out to win

CLITHEROE Badminton Club’s C team recorded the narrowest of victories in their first-ever Mid-Lancashire League Fourth Division clash against local rivals Flight. Gaynor Sutcliffe, Rebecca Lee and

Julie Pym gained a 3-1 point advantage, only for Chris Tomlinson, David Dar nell and Tony Bush, to lose it. In the mixed doubles it was extremely dose, with four out of five games being

shared. Pym and Bush took the decisive

game to give Clitheroe a 10-8 victory. In the Second Division Clitheroe A travelled to play a strong, newly-pro moted St Andrew’s B. Olstowski, Pym, Meadows, Smitton;

Louise Burrill and Mary Brass battled well against a distinct home court advantage to come away with four wins, with Olstowski commendably involved

in them all. Members of Clitheroe Badminton

Club are looking forward to an exciting season with a move to the recently:built sports facility at Oakhill, offering five county standard badminton courts. Anyone interested in playing compet

itive badminton in one of the club’s five teams in the Blackburn and District Mid-Lancashire League should contact

Doubles event winners

THE annual Move-it Dou bles Bowling Competition was won by A. Threlfall and M. Niven on Sunday. Sponsored by Mel

Edmondson and played at Ribblesdale Wanderers Cricket and Bowling Club, the competition attracted 26 entries and lasted over eight hours. .Threlfall and Niven beat runners-up A. Wallace and

B. Driver, having come through the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The losing quarter-final

ists were C.Snape and T.Etchells, S.Edmondson and D.Rostron, L.Tomlin- son and M.Rostron, and I.Tomlinson and H.Hodder. And the losing semi-final

ists were A.Dewhurst and B.Hinks, E.Wallace and MrsM. Dennett.

and Daniel Bush, and Phil Mileham and Tony Bush to secure maximum points. Neither pair were troubled in

their matches, which means that the team only lost one match all season, away to champions Burnley A - as had the B team. The team now await the deci

sion of the league over whether they are promoted to the First Division next season. The A team have a chance for honours on Saturday when they play Blackburn Northern C in the cup final, hoping to win the trophy that has eluded them for the last few years.

enjoys narrow victory

By Edward Lee

WILLIAM Walne emerged as the overall winner of the Shirebum Trophy at Stony- hurst Park Golf Club. But he needed a card

play-off on 36 points to take the title off Henry Farrar, the latter having to settle for the Division Three prize. Division One went to

Steve Clash (34), the Divi sion Two award was claimed by Steve Bufton (35) and there were long-drive and nearest-the-pin awards for Tony Wright and Ross Hib- bert respectively. Carolyn Blockeel (31)

won the ladies’ top prize, with divisional honours going to Janette Dowdy (28) and lady captain Sue Kirk (31), who also won the long-drive and nearest-the- pin awards. A meal was provided by

the sponsor Steve Alcock at the Shireburn Arms, and that was followed by the presentation of the prizes. The previous weekend,

John Kirk’s Captain’s Day went ahead in very wet weather, providing difficult conditions on the day. In a really tight finish,

three players scored nett 68, the outcome being decided on a card play-off.

• Neil Duckworth (87-19- 68) emerged victorious ahead of Keith Fitzhenry (85-17-68) and Shaun Wil son (85-17-68). Graham Monk won the

nearest-the-pin award and Andrew Blockheel carded a round of 76 to take the gross prize. A fierce battle is develop

ing at the top of the Mytton Fold Order of Merit table, as good friends and playing partners Keith Gill and Chris Chadwick vie for the lead as the season end approaches. Chadwick's victory in the

September Medal was enough to propel him to the top of the table after Gill took the lead only a week ago. An excellent 70-5-65 was

enough to secure first prize for Chadwick over Mark Green, who scored a fine 79- 12-67. In Division One, David

Clegg's 79-11-68 was good enough to take the prize over Lee Owens, who returned to form with 83-14- 69.

The Division Two hon

ours went to Josh Davies (84-16-68), who just edged out Chris Hughes (91-20-

71), and in Division Three, Dave Pennington's fine 91- 22-69 was good enough to see off Gary Keogh's 95-24- 71.

committee enjoyed it's annual outing to Bingley St Ives. An excellent day, and a

The previous day, the

superb course, were matched only by the weath er.

Lady Captain Elect

Linda Clegg showed her male counterparts the way by winning the event with 34 points, and also carried her playing partners, presi dent David Hargreaves and captain Tony Cross, around the majority of the course to claim the team prize. Mytton Fold ladies have

had a successful summer in the LLCGU Bronze Divi sion League. Around 120 Lancashire

clubs entered, and the local ladies qualified for the final stages on Monday. They travelled to South-

port and Ainsdale and fin ished third overall. Former member and cur

rent ELGA captain Andy White made a triumphant return to Whalley to claim the Open Singles. He scored 72-7-70, but

needed a three-way card play-off to edge out Ghyll members Ainsley Ashby (88-18-70) and Jack Farn- hill (83-13-70), as Dandy Liles carded 74 to win the gross prize. Martin Shorrock (95-21-

74) won the Hitchon Tro phy Final after a card play off with Andrew Wray (76- 2-74). And Peter Shaw (82-11-

71) win the Vintage Medal for members aged 65 and over. In the subsidiary medal

. Danny Rodgers (89-23-66) was the overall winner and also topped Division Three ahead of Geoff Mayoh (92- 21-71). Mike Conroy’s 75 was

good enough for the gross prize and also saw him lead Division One with a nett 69, one better than fellow six- handicapper Chris Blackad- der.

Division Two went to

Kevin Walker after a play off with Steve Shoreman after both returned 86-14- 72.

The September Brooch

and LGU Medal at Whalley saw Daphne Dawson (82-6- 76) beat Iris Sherry (100-24- 76) into second place with Anne Prior (102-25-77) fin ishing third.
