www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Sun shines on sports day

A POSTPONED Ribble Valley village sports day was rewarded with glorious weather when it took place on Satur

day. Rimington and Middop sports day

had been rained off earlier in the sum mer, but was rescheduled for Septem ber.

A large crowd gathered on the

Coulthurst Jubilee Recreation Field to enjoy a full programme of sporting events and keen competition and the afternoon ended with a popular barbe cue.

Mr Edward Carter presented the

trophies and thanked everyone for helping to make it a super afternoon. Members of the sports committee

also thanked all those who contributed goods or donations which were appre ciated.

Independent schools — what to remember

THE school year starts in Sep tember, and independent schools are often full six months in advance, so it is wise to start planning at least a year in advance of entry if possible. The sooner you start looking, the more chance you have of getting a place. Ages for entry into each year

group are based on completed years as at September 1st. For example, a child born on March 3rd, 1994 will be 14 for entry in September 2008 while a child born on October 3rd,

ADVERTISING FEATURE

1994 will be regarded as aged 13. ■ Think carefully about the

best time for your child to join a school in th e UK. Most preparatory (junior) schools do not normally accept pupils in the final year (at ages 10+ or 12+). Senior schools do not normally accept pupils for entry at ages 15 (Year 11) or 17

The Headmaster of Stonyhurst College is pleased to announce the provision of

Scholarships at 13+ (Year 9) and Sixth Form (Year 12) for entry in September 2008.

Academic, Music and Art Scholarships as well as All-Rounder Awards are available for those pupils who would benefit from a modem and dynamic Jesuit education at Stonyhurst

College, one of the country's leading co educational boarding and day schools.

Scholarships are worth up to 50% of the fees.

I t is important to be clear about your child's academic abilities so that you can look for appropriate schools. Schools which are willing to

consider offering your child a place will require your child to sit an entrance examination. This will tes t your child's

knowledge and level of achievement in English and Mathematics. Older children will also be tested in Science and a foreign language. Schools will also want to interview your child and will ask for a report from the Head of your child's current school: Independent schools vary

widely in size and atmosphere, and i t is important to visit three or four schools to enable you to compare the options and to consider which one

thrive in a more for mally structured environment. Others prefer a less formal atmosphere. Schools have different styles and it is important to choose one where your child feels com fortable and which gives him/her appro priate motivation. Most independent

boarding schools insist th a t pupils whose parents live overseas have a guardian living near the school, who can offer a home at exeats (weekends out of school) and at half-term holidays. You will want to be sure that your child will be safe and well cared-for when not in school.

THERE was an alternative venue for this year’s Hodder Valley Show. Cattle movement

restrictions after the outbreak of foot and mouth in Surrey made organisers decide not stage a showfield event this year. Instead they opted to

hold an indoor show and Saturday’s event was staged in Newton Village Hall. And instead of all the

usual animal classes, the only competitive sections were for chil dren and members of the Young Farmers’ Club. Visitors were invited

along to the venue to view the exhibits all afternoon. Committee chairman

Mr James Carr said: “There was a good turnout of people on a

nice day. The children and YFC put on a good show of exhibits of a high standard. Thanks to everyone for their help and support in making this year’s show a success. “Next year the Hod

der Valley Show will be back to normal at Dun- sop Bridge on Septem ber 13th.” A full round-up of

Hodder Valley Show results will be appearing in next week’s Clitheroe Advertiser and Times. Our photograph
