MEMBERS and guests of the Rotary Club of Ribbles- dale were treated to a display of ballroom dancing through the ages. Entitling his talk: “Ribble

Valley’s Billy Elliott,” former coal miner Jock Lawrey gave a sprightly display of basic dance steps within the con fines of the club’s meeting

room at Waddington’s Moor cock Inn. The son of a boxer, Mr Lawrey described how, 50 years ago, while working as a Rossendale miper, he decided to take up ballroom dancing which led to a career teaching dance. Club president David

Frost welcomed guests and members following the pres

entation of cheques to the Castle restoration appeal and East Lancashire Hospice. He also thanked members for their help in packing bags during the festive season at Marks and Spencer outlets in Blackburn and Accrington in aid of the East Lancashire Hospice. The venture, he said, had raised £11,500.

Plans for a graffiti showcase

COUNCIL bosses are holding talks with police to allow young graffiti “artists” to express their handiwork in a socially acceptable manner. Mr Bill Alker, policy and development officer for Ribble Valley Borough Council, has been speaking to officers at Clitheroe Police to identify some funding, which will enable the budding new artists to showcase their talent in a unique, but tolerable way and at a designated place. The move follows a spate of graffiti

attacks which are making Clitheroe look “messy, unsightly and ugly”. As reported on page one of last week’s

Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, police have joined forces with the council to crack down on the spate of graffiti incidents blighting the town. In the past few mpnths, officers have

been studying spray-painted artwork of so- called graffiti “taggers” - the signatures of the offenders responsible - and they will be stepping up patrols in the area and issuing on-the-spot fines of up to £80 to vandals caught daubing graffiti on walls and build ings. Areas hit by graffiti include the Cas tle grounds, Henthorn Road, Pimlico Road, Kemple View, Edisford Road, Rich mond Terrace and the Woone Lane areas of Clitheroe. In light of these incidents, Mr Bill Alker

said: “We are exploring ways in which funding can be obtained and spent towards an arts project. “If we obtain the relevant funding, we

can work with the young people and get them to practice their art skills in a con structive rather than destructive manner.” Young graffiti artists who are interested

in getting involved in an arts project or have any ideas about funding are asked to call Mr Alker on 01200 414412.

Simpson, of Clitheroe Police, after bogus r / ^ callers tricked their way into an elderly cou- pie’s home in Castle View and escaped with money and jewellery worth £260.

The incident took place at approximately

12-40 p.m. on Monday. A conman, posing as a workman from the water board, called at the couple’s home and wished to inspect a water tank in the rear yard. He is described as white, approximately 30

years of age, of solid build, about 5ft. 7ins. tall with short dark hair. Police say the offender then said to the

woman victim that he would send a col league to the yard where she should meet him. The woman made her way through to the yard where she met the second offender. He is described as also white, approxi

mately 20 years of age, about 5ft. Sins, tall, of thin build and ivith a thin face. He had shaved hair with scarring or pock marks on his head. While the second offender engaged the vic

tim in conversation, it is understood that the first offender let himself in through the front door of the house, made a hurried search of the premises on both floors and made off with £260 worth of money and jewellery. Police investigations are continuing into

the incident and officers are anxious to alert local residents to such practices and are par ticularly keen to catch the culprits who prey on the elderly or vulnerable.
