first-class workers I WAS sorry to see that councillors Stephen and Margaret Sutcliffe had to write in your columns last week. While I fully understand the feelings
of K. Snape and others with regard to the outcome of the mosque application, I have to say th a t Margaret and Stephen are two of the hardest working, most dedicated and competent council lors we have. It has been a pleasure to work alongside them over the years. They work tirelessly for the welfare
and wellbemg of Clitheroe and the Kib ble Valley and they, along with their other Liberal Democrat colleagues, are not harbouring over-inflated political egos. The best interests of all those they represent are always at the forefront of their thoughts and actions, but sadly, even in local politics you cannot please everybody. I hope Margaret and Stephen continue their work for a long time to come.

It is time to put the
record straight I NEED to set the record straight. My daughter, Kathryn Snape, and
her partner, Paul Rosthom, have been on a much-needed holiday following much stress in the past few weeks. They have spent much time and money reno vating their cottage adjoining the old chapel before their forthcoming mar riage. They have also spent much time and money along with other local resi dents objecting to change of the old chapel to a mosque (now passed) with no support at all from local councillors. They did not a t any stage receive
phone calls (they do not have a land line) or a letter from Couns Stephen and Margaret Sutcliffe. I am sure that his “friendly letter” would have includ ed Paul’s correct name and not Peter as Coun. Sutcliffe refers to him. Coun. Sutcliffe also says that he called and they were not in. I personally think that a caring councillor would call again when they were in on such an important issue!

Three-stream bin
service inadequate AS I write this - on Christmas Eve - it would seem unlikely that I will be one of those consulted by Urban Mines on RVBC's three-stream wheelie bin col lection service.
I would therefore like to use your
pages to comment upon both this and Lancashire County Council's threat ened closure of the Petrie Waste Collec tion Point. The wheelie bins are too small for the
needs of average families, particularly as there is no provision for the recycling of cardboard and plastic packaging material. The emptying of the recy cling bins once a fortnight is too infre quent. We recycle cardboard through our local recycling point at Petrie, an outstanding service staffed by truly outstanding individuals whose under standing of the concept of “service” seems to far exceed that of the Lan cashire County Council that is evaluat ing it and threatening its closure. The only faihng with the Petrie site
is that there is still no provision to col lect plastic packaging, which probably makes up several bins of our household waste in the course of a typical year. This is about our children’s future, not Government targets. •

Freedom of speech
should extend to all AS a firm beheyer in freedom of speech, democracy and religious freedom, may
I say before anyone else writes to this newspaper complaining of “intoler ance”, they should take a look at the way Christians are being treated in Islamic countries, such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to understand what “intolerance” really means. ■ Correct me if I am wrong, but going
on what has happened elsewhere, it does seem to me that local religious and political leaders are propelling many voters into the arms of the BNP and UKIP. Muslims have their rights, but so do
we. Am I alone when I say I am fed up with the rights of the English being ignored? Looking a t recent events in
Clitheroe, it seems that some Muslims and blinkered Christians love free speech, but do not agree with anyone else having it. Freedom of speech is being suppressed by allegations of “intolerance” and “racism”. This can not be fair.

St James welcomes
ALL children IT has been brought to my attention that, possibly because of the debate surrounding faith schools in the nation
al media, some local parents may believe that St James’ CE Primary School in Clitheroe will only admit chil
dren whose families attend church. As anyone who knows St James’ mil
tell you, the school has always been proud that its children come from a variety of faith and non-faith back grounds. We continue to welcome all children and I would therefore seek to reassure all parents and carers that their children can be assured of a place at this open school.

« Your support is very
precious to us all THANK you for sho\ving your support over the past year by publishing our news releases. We are particularly grate ful for publication of our youth activi ties and achievements. At a time when many young people
have a reputation for bad behaviour, it must be very reassuring for your read ership to know that some young people are working to make a positive impact on their local community. We wish you all a very happy and healthy new year.
