N ew signings catch the eye

ClilherocFC ................ 7 Bradford Park Avenue . .3 FINISHING proved the difference between an established Bradford Park Avenue and a Clitheroe side

■ still finding its feet. The new players prom

ised were all aboard, and the Blues gave a good account against a side that scored seven against the club earlier in the season. Six fresh additions were

made to the Shawbridge side's last outing on Boxing Day, across the line up from back to front.

ffeAccrington Stanley's Martin Fearon took up the gloves in Paul Horridge's absence, Russ McKenna slotted in at left-back, Ryan Fisher bossed midfield and new striker Chris Ward net ted on his debut. Joining that quartet was

the returning Will Exton as Ward's strike partner, and captain Simon Garner at the heart of defence. In fact this new-look

Blues created twice as many opportunities as their Yorkshire visitors, only to be denied by a couple of excellent saves made by

VPolish goalkeeper Piotr Skiba. The result flattered Bradford, but there was no

denying their finishing was exceptional. David Cooke netted

Avenue's first on the half hour, breaking away after a period of sustained pressure by the Blues. The forward's lightning

pace saw him race 25 yards from the wing on to a through ball in behind the Clitheroe defence, where he tucked his shot past Fearon from the edge of the area. Two minutes later and it

was 2-0, although this time due to a defensive lapse that allowed Chris Clarke a free shot on goal. Garner brought much

stability to the centre of defence in what appeared to be a strong partnership with Gregg Anderson, flanked by McKenna and Anthony Daniels. The skipper dealt well

with Cooke's original chal lenge on goal, forcing the player wide with a tackle, but the Bradford player reacted first, the ball was laid back in to the middle and the danger wasn't cleared, gifting Clarke enough space to find his spot. However, Clitheroe could

have had two goals of their own by this point if their shooting had been equally as sharp. Fisher proved a thorn in

Bradford's side all afternoon and put a ball across the box in the opening 10 min utes that Exton struck wide at the back post. And Chris Heslop was

also guilty of leaving his scoring boots at home as he blazed over the bar, but the Blues were definitely out to make trouble in Bradford's box. However, the two first

half goals didn't stop Clitheroe competing as the introduction of player-man ager Peter Smith after the break brought an instant reaction. The veteran striker

forced Skiba into his first save of the game with his first touch and Clitheroe's first shot on target. And within the minute he

followed that up with another scurry into the box that called for a one-on-one save from the Polish shot stopper. But it was Ward's close

range header from substi tute Owen Roberts left- vving cross that brought the save of the game, as Skiba arched his back to palm

over a powerful attempt. Bradford's third goal fol

lowed in the form of a class free kick taken by veteran former professional Neil Redfearn. The former Charlton and Wigan mid fielder curled a 25-yard

don at Shawbridge, Blackburn Rovers Ladies will hope for more of the same in the league on Sunday when Chelsea come to Clitheroe (kick-off 1 p.m.). New manager Adam Lakeland saw his

H

side take victory in his first game in charge, and will look to match that achievement in the league. Rovers have recorded four wins and a

draw from their opening 11 games of top flight league foothall, and find themselves in eighth place in the Premier League National Division, with some clear breathing space

effort around Clitheroe's wall to leave Fearon no chance of a save. Picking the ball out of

the net was the only time the ball got near the Clitheroe keeper in the sec ond half, so much was

AFTER their 3-0 FA Women's Cup fourth round win over AFC Wimble

Clitheroe's search for a goal. So when Fisher was

tripped in the box follovying a cross into the box by Smith, Ward stepped up to fire home the spot kick which Skiba very nearly saved.

from the bottom three. And Lakeland is sure the team can sur

vive in the top flight and push on in the cup competitions too. He said: "Our aim is to stay up and I'm

confident we can do that. We've set our selves a target of 19 points, so two more wins ought to do it and then the pressure will be off.

"It's something of a learning curve for

both myself and the club this season, but if wc can retain our top-flight status then wc can focus fully on both the Lancashire and FA Cups, as well as looking further ahead to the next campaign."

Missed chances costly

Grindlelon....................2 Cononley Sports ..........4 IF a game was won on chances created, Grindleton would have won this at a canter. However it is scoring

goals that count, and this is where the village side’s Northern Plant Hire Tro phy clash was lost. Drawn against higher

opposition, Grindleton fan cied their chances and start ed the brighter, racing into a two -oal lead within the first 20 minutes. Martin Cowey opened

the scoring with a neat indi vidual goal, lobbing the goal keeper with a left-foot chip. The lead was soon dou

bled when Scott Fielding put the ball in the back of the net at the third attempt after fine approach play involving centre half Ryan Fawcett and winger John Ash. However, Cononley

pulled one back after what looked like a blatant push on Fawcett, only for the ref eree to wave play on, result ing in a tap in for a visiting striker. Grindleton continued to

have the lion’s share of the chances and continued to press, finishing the half the stronger, Cowey rattling the woodwork with a fierce strike. The locals began the sec

ond half as they finished the first, this time it was Scott Fielding’s turn to hit the woodwork, striking the right-hand post with only the keeper to beat. And with manager Sean

Hursl Green ...............3

IN-form Enfield started brightly against the East Lancashire League leaders Hurst Green and proved

yt^hysically strong enough to doininate the midfield in the early exchanges. It took a moment of con

troversy, however, for them to turn that early pressure into a goal when they were awarded a dubious penalty. Hurst Green skipper

Tom Bamber appeared to be pushed in his own penal ty area, but when He landed on the ball, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Mick Berry scored the

penalty, but Hurst Green did have two good chances to level matters before the

(.^interval. ■ Andy Whaites shot wide when well placed, but then forced an excellent save with a close-range effort. As the half wore on

Enfield almost doubled their advantage, but Steve Young made an excellent save with his legs as Berry threatened to strike again. With the leaders a goal

down at the interval, man ager Andy Holden addressed the situation by demanding much more

Rimington dish out a hammering

Riminglon ..................S Wilton..........................0

RIMINGTON got 2007 off to a great start with a com prehensive hammering of bottom side Witton. Mankowski was denied

an early opener after the keeper made a point-blank save after Jon Penman headed back across goal, but the midfielder put Rim- ington ahead after good work from Matt Coulter. Tom O’Neill caused

havoc down the left, but the locals were unable to profit from his quality crosses until Penman lashed home five minutes before the break. In the second half, with the next goal crucial, Rim

from his players after the interval. And his team delivered

with a performance of which he could be proud and within five minutes of the restart they were in front. The first goal came via an

exquisite Mark Young strike at the end of a flow

ington missed a glut of chances before Ollie Maclean unleashed a volley into the top corner, with both feet off the floor, to make it 3-0. O’Neill got in on the act

with his trusty left foot, before Rimington added four in the last 12 minutes through Coulter, O’Neill and a brace from Walmsley, just reward for his raan-of- the-match performance. The villagers will be hop

ing for another win at Peel Park on Saturday, before they travel to Barnoldswick for a re-run of last season’s Craven Cup Final. While Terry Braithwaite

accepts the league is out of their hands, with Hurst

games, Rimington had a lot to prove if they were to con tinue their title challenge, and the hard work paid off. Langho started the

match the brighter, but after a change in formation, Rimington took full control and never looked back. The Tangerines forced the breakthrough after 20

on the overlap and his dan gerous cross was turned into his own goal by an unlucky Enfield defender. That goal saw Hurst

Green assume complete con trol of proceedings with Bar ton unlucky not to increase the lead when his shot hit the inside of the 'post from the edge of the box.

minutes when a Jack Dear- den corner was fiercely whipped in for Gary Brun- skill to head home unmarked from six yards. A second came 10 min

utes later as Gary Haslam forced the keeper to save, only for Brunskill to claim his second and his eighth of the season. At the other end, keeper

Danny Anderson closed down the striker to prevent Langho getting a foothold in the game, and he then tipped a shot round the post. Rimington upped the

tempo, and fantastic inter play in the centre of the pitch from Haslam, .Andrew Blackledge and Brunskill

Craig Dewhurst and the

prolific Mark Young - twice - forced saves from the Enfield keeper and the third goal duly arrived on 75 minutes when Barton’s run and cross found his striking partner Young, who finished in style. , Hurst Green dominated the remainder of the game

sent Dearden down the left. He then beat the right

back to cross inch-perfect for Glen Dinsdale to power fully head home. The second half contin

ued in the same fashion as the first with Rimington in full control. Haslam missed a number

of chances until finally he got his just reward. When a corner was

returned to Dearden, he cut inside two players to unleash a fierce shot, only for the keeper to parry into the feet of Haslam, who made no mistake from three yards. Dinsdale was man- of-the-match.

with central defensive pair ing Phil Walker and "Tony Coupe ensuring that the early threat posed by Enfield never remateri alised. The locals will be hoping'

to stretch their lead at the top when they make the tricky trip to Silsden on Saturday (2 p.m.).

Lloyd cursing the-missed chances and the opportuni ty of putting the game out of the visitors’ reach, Cononley equalised with a rare attack, giving stopper Darren Jackson no chance in goal. In fact it was Jackson

who kept the scores level with a couple of fingertip saves to deny Cononley the lead. But, with over 20 min

utes remaining, Grindleton pressed the self destruct button and leaked two goals from dead balls, one from a corner, the second from the penalty spot. Overall a disappointing

end to a game that had promised so much more. This Saturday Grindle

ton return to league action and hopefully return to winning ways, with a game a t bottom side Trawden Celtic.

Dog-gone!

DOG Inn's hopes of begin ning 2007 with a win over Great Harwood Rovers were dashed when their match at 'Wilson's was called off due to a water logged pitch half an hour before kick-off. The Whalley side will be

hoping to get a game on against Stanhill WMC at King George’s on Sunday.

the standings, and have a great chance of winning. Also, a monthly prize of

£500 and 10 runners-up prizes of £50 are awarded to the highest point scorers on the website, so even more money could be won by the end of the season. This money came as a

great help to the Lions, which will enable them to progress and grow as a club. Meanwhile, the Lions

began the new year in emphatic style with a con vincing 5-0 victory at mid table Intake. The game heralded a wel come return for current

First Division player-of- the-year Gaughan, who had missed the previous four games with an ankle injury. The Lions made an excel

lent start after just 10 min utes, with Holgate threading a neat ball through to Pinard, who hit a great shot which went in off the near post. The hosts then applied

some pressure of their own, and a deflected cross brought an excellent full- length save from the diving Mashiter. The ball was cleared

downfield by the impressive Pickup, and fell to Hamil ton, who went on a mazy

run down the wing before whipping in a dangerous cross that was put into his own net by an Intake defender on the far post. Again the home side

turned the screw, but good goalkeeping and an excel lent central defensive dis play from promising.new partnership Paul Clegg and Avci kept Intake at bay. With their tails up in the

second half, the Lions poured forward, and good work from Callaghan put through Pinard, whose drilled shot was saved, but Holgate was there to bun dle home.

Minutes later Pinard was

again clear on goal, and an unselfish pass left Clegg with the easiest of tap-ins to make it four. By now it was one-way

traffic, and substitute and man-of-the-match Johnny Mashiter was at the heart of all the Lion’s creativity.

Clitheroe win table top clash

Clilheroe Hockey Club .1 Springfields.................. 0 THIS was a tough encounter between table-'^ topping Clitheroe and third place Springfields. The game started at a

fast and furious pace, and Clitheroe forced the first penalty corner after only three minutes. A cleverly-worked routine

ended in the league leaders taking advantage, with Anna Griffiths powering the ball past a helpless keeper. The game was end-to-end

for the entire first half, with both keepers making saves. Both teams played some

excellent hockey, and it was hard to call who would end the match with the points. Just like the first 35 min

utes, the game ebbed and flowed in the second half and was every bit as exciting. Springfields held firm in

defence and managed to keep the quick, skilful Clitheroe forwards at bay. Springfields then hit a

purple patch and forced five penalty corners in quick succession, but more out standing defending from Allen, Moorby, Hunter and Haugh maintained Clitheroe's advantage. The last 10 minutes saw

the league’s top scorer Rachel Walmsley, back after five weeks out with injury, Griffiths and Box- Morton go close, but Grif fiths’ goal proved enough. Southport 3rds .............0 Clilheroe 2 n d s .............. 9 CLITHEROE'S seconds had a great start to the New Year with a convincing win over Southport. The away team got off to

a flying start with a goal from a short corner after two minutes. Clitheroe continued to

dominate the first half with some excellent passing and , attacking play, which soon found gaps in the Southport defence, resulting in anoth er four goals in the first half. The Southport keeper

had an excellent game and saved many of Clitheroe's attempts to see the half time score at 5-0. Southport came out

strong after half-time and put together some good play to get through the Clitheroe defence, forcing some short corners and excellent strikes on goal. Clitheroe kept these

attacks at bay, and respond ed by being able to link p together yet more excellent play down the right wing, resulting in three goals from open play and one from a short corner. Both teams played in a

good spirit which resulted in an enjoyable match. • Clitheroe would also

like to thank Springfields and Southport for taking « part in a minute’s silence in remembrance of Eric Chard, the club’s first presi dent and umpire, who died recently.
