Mountaineers look to recruit more members for new season
AT CUtheroe Mountaineering Club’s annual meeting, retiring chairman Brian Davies celebrated the re-emer- gence of rock climbing as a major focus of the club’s activities over the past three to four years. I t is largely due to a regular weekly
programme of climbing meets at indoor venues during the winter and at local crags in the summer. An aim for 2007 will be to bring the factions of. mountain walkers and rock climbers closer together through the choice of venues for outdoor meets and by encouraging more social get- togethers mid-week. The chairman noted how clubs in
general are struggling to recruit new members and outlined some of the steps taken by Clitheroe Moun taineering Club to raise its profile, such as providing a more varied range of indoor meetings, improving the quality of presentation of the club’s meets calendar and the con struction of a website to promote the club’s activities. Due to e-mail tech nology, communication between
members has never been easier, lead ing to better social links and the development of extra-curricular activities such as visits to the Xscape centre in Leeds for ice climbing and ski-ing, and mountain biking. However, on a cautionary note, the
number of members had Med to rise and some of the weekend meets had not been well enough supported to meet the costs of accommodation. As a result, retiring treasurer Frank Taylor recommended an increase in members’ subscriptions to improve the club’s financial balance. It had been weakened by increases in rent ing other mountaineering clubs’ huts, the fees incurred to set up and run the club’s website, and increases in subscriptions tor the benefits and services of the British Mountaineer ing Council. Members unanimously accepted the proposed changes. After thanking the retiring com
mittee, the follomng officers were elected for the coming year: chair man Brian Davies, vice-chairman Ian Grace, treasurer Prank Taylor,
secretary (including membership) Nick Millward, hut meets secretaiy Valerie Grooby and indoor meets sec retary Steve Andrews. Also elected to serve on the committee were John Barrett, Aim Connell, Anne Daykin, Tony Halliwell, Bern Hardman, Eric Mansfield, Godfrey Metcalfe and Amanda Reddy. The indoor programme for this
year will include talks about moun taineering in Siberia, Dolomites via Ferratas, USA mountains and Africa, and informative sessions about the Search and Rescue Dogs Association, mountain weather and the geology of the Munros. Outdoor meets will comprise of six hut week ends in the Lake District and Wales, two camping meets in Northumber land and Wales and monthly day meets except for July. Mid-week climbing meets will continue indoors until the outdoor pro gramme starts bn May 3rd. Further information call club
secretary Nick Millward on 01200 441346.

RIBBLE VALLEY MP Nigel Evans has slammed the Government’s cuts to the Post Office network, which would result in an estimated 2,500 Post Offices closing across the country. He said: “The Government has dis
played no long-term vision on this issue. Post Offices are not just a place to buy stamps, but are often the centre of our small and rural communities. I urge the Prime Minister to personally intervene and make sure th a t his Government is doing the right thing by those of us who do not live in cities.”
