BASED on Antonia Fraser’s book about the ill-fated Archduchess of Aus tria and later Queen of France, “Marie Antoinette” tells the story of one of the most misunderstood and abused woman in history, from her birth in Imperial Austria to her later life in France. From her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 15 to her reign as
queen at 19 and to the end of her reign and ultimately the fall of Versailles, Sofia Coppola’s film focuses on the personal qualities of the character of
Marie-Antoinette and thus participates in her historical rehabilitation. Antoinette is seen as a respectful loyal daughter, a loving mother and a patient wife who had to withstand a flood of vin dictive criticism from the moment she set foot in the French court. The cast includes Kirsten Dunst in. the
lead role, with support from Marianne Faithfull and Steve Coogan.

m A treat for all children
James and the Giant Peach; Octagon Theatre, Bolton; until January 20th
CONTINUING their success ful format of adapting Roald Dahl books for great Christ mas shows, the Octagon is put ting on an imaginative produc tion of “James and the Giant Peach”. After James has been
orphaned when a rhinoceros kills his parents, he is sent to live with his cruel aunts. He is given a bag of crocodile
tongues, which he accidentally drops next to an old peach tree, whereupon a giant peach grows. James finds himself inside the peach and befriends Centipede, Earthworm, Grasshopper, Ladybird and Spider and they embark on a series of adventures. The cast - two women,
Emma Manton and Elizabeth Marsh, and four men, Anthony Hunt, Alan Morissey, Thomas Padden and Matthew Woody- att - are lively and multi-tal-, ented, singing and dancing and
playing a range of musical instruments. They make the
most of the opportunities for humour. Simon Slater has composed
the music and
Jon.Bausor’s design is clever and entertain ing and I liked the unusual use of the peach stone. In these days of computeri
sation, digitalisation, anima- tronics etc. it was lovely to see children still entranced by the magic of theatre. My young companions were impressed by the costumes, especially Spider, and the laughed loudest at Earthworm’s attempts to attract the seagulls by acting ^ bait. They would have liked just a little bit more audience participation i.e. shouting! But they too enjoyed the various forms of the peach and the puppets. Sarah Esdaile’s pro duction is ideally suited for children of all ages.

p.m. Simon, whose “day job” is as a grounds
man for Ribble Valley Borough Council, also does a nice sideline in spooks and sound effects. He has had plenty of fun and helped put Ciitheroe on the map in recent years by taking visitors on guided “Ghost Tours” around the Ribble Valley and beyond - a hobby which led to him being chosen to present Granada TV series “Into the Unknown” last year. His “audience with” stage appearance
in his home town is sure to be an interest ing and engaging one, ivith Simon talking about local ghost sightings, noted haunt ed local'buildings and some creepy myths and legends. The audience will also be treated to some of his now famous sound effects, with plenty of comedy and anec dotes thrown into the mix. Crganisers at the St Mary’s Centre hope
to make the “an evening with...” format a more regular event, with local guest speakers on various subjects. Tickets for the event cost £4 on the door
and all money- raised will be divided between the St Mary’s Centre and help ing Ribble Valley Radio get back on air, scheduled for the not-so-distant future. ’
