Santa’s Slei^ Tablers raise'

by Duncan Smith

CHRISTMAS is as much about giving as receiving - and the gen erous folk of Ribble Valley certainly proved

the case! Rob Stevenson, chair

man of Clitheroe Round Table, this week said “a huge and heartfelt thank you” to everyone who helped Tablers raise more than £4,900 through their annual Santa’s Sleigh fund-raising effort. The total was almost

£300 up on last year and all the money raised tvill go to support local chari ties and good causes. Tablers rallied around,

making 18 outings with Santa in and around Clitheroe in the run-up to Christmas. Their fund raising success was in spite of some dreadful weather conditions, which left &nta pretty soggy on occasions and his helpers drying out drenched bank notes!

PRIVATE CHAPELS Mon - Fri Bam -7pm

Sat Bam -12 noon, Sat/Sun 2-4pm This year’s “new and

improved” sleigh also proved an overwhelming success during the rounds, with many children tak ing the opportunity of a picture with Santa. On the Saturday before Christmas, Lancaster Round Table members turned up with a car packed full of donated toys and gifts, which were handed out to children meeting Santa outside the Castle Gates.

Table member and

Santa collection co-ordi nator Darren Fletcher commented that just see- ing the children’s faces light up on receiving a present and meeting Santa really made his Christmas and underlined the importance of the col lection, which ultimately benefits the local commu nity. Mr Stevenson also said

a big thank you to all the Table members and

£1.4m. sports facility launch

A MAJOR new £1.4m. sports facility bringing opportunities for fitness and fun to school children and community users in Ribble Valley was to be opened yester day. Lancashire County Council has used a

£1.4m grant from the Big Lottery Fund to build a much-needed sports hall at Grindleton’s Bowland High, a school with specialist performing arts status. Funding came from the Big Lottery

Fund’s £750m New Opportunities for PE and Sport Programme The new facility was to be opened by

Burnley FC manager Mr Steve Cotterill. Representatives from Lancashire Coun

ty Council, Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil, the Big Lottery Fund and a number of other civic dignitaries were to be entertained with a selection of sports demonstrations before the opening. ■ Mr Stephen Cox, headteacher at Bow-

land, said: “The school and local commu nity are absolutely delighted with our new sports hall and are extremely grate ful for the support received from the Big Lottery. “The sports hall will help meet the

great demand for sports facilities and coaching in the community, raising stan dards of PE and sport and increasing participation in this rural area.”

friends who assisted in the collection programme and the sleigh building, not forgetting local businesses who kindly donated materials and equipment for the sleigh. Our picture shows

Clitheroe Round Table members Rick Pallister, Lachie MacDonald, Dar ren Fletcher and Andrew Whiteman with Santa resplendent in^his new sleigh a t the Castle Gates. (A231206/1)

Bridge club WINNERS

a t

Clitheroe Bridge Club on Thursday evening were: N/S Pat Ward and Roy Ward, Chris Pollard and George B. Pollard. E/W Pat Murray and Tony Edwards, Brenda Wil son and John Renton. On December 28th,

winners were: Geoff Capstick and Frances Porter, Richard Lap- thorne and Ruth Reid, Roy and Pat Ward.

C.P. Bob made it a meeting of note for the Probus

CHATBURN resident and Probus Club mem ber Bob Hornby turned the monthly meeting into a notable musical event. Emphasising the debt

he owes to the late Jim Parker, Mr Hornby described, during a meet ing of Clitheroe and Dis trict Probus Club, how Mr Parker had inspired him to start to learn key board techniques 20 years ago. Mr Hornby described

how he spends weeks tun- ing the basic keyboard “voices” to produce the sounds made by the mas ters of the dance floor, of

jazz, ragtime and big bands. Different musical

instruments were illus trated with the piano, trumpet, trombone, sax ophone, church organ
