THE Clitheroe Advertiser has teamed up with local employer 3M for a special competition for our young readers to mark National Road Safety Week,

which runs all this week. 3M is a headline sponsor of the

week - organised by the road safety charity Brake - and the company also runs its own child road safety initiative to help prevent the high number of young people killed or injured on our roads each year. This initiative includes the web

site www.3Mstreetwise.co.uk that lias been created by 3M with the Department for Transport, Brake and teachers as a free teaching

resource for schools and with spe cial sections for parents and chil dren to use at home. Our competition is open to all

children aged between 7-11 years inclusive and the first prize is a new bicycle, worth up to £200, plus a cycle helmet and a pack of reflec tive accessories from 3M. The winner will be the first entry

picked out of the hat to answer cor rectly the questions on road safety on the left. The answers to all of these can be found on the 3M Streetwise website if you need a helping hand. The closing date for entries is November 16th.

RUBBER-FACED funny man Phil Cool is playing his home stage for the first time in three decades. Described regularly as a “stand

up chameleon”, Phil Cool (pictured) last played Clitheroe in the 1970s when he entertained the local pigeon fanciers.

AUTHOR Gervase Phinn, widely known for his witty books describing his life as a school inspector in the York shire Dales, was at Clitheroe’s Kaydee Book shop to sign copies of his new title, “Little Trea sures”. Mr Phinn was in the shop

for almost two hours, during which time he kept the cus tomers and staff entertained with a few of his comical anecdotes. His latest book is full of the amusing things th a t children say and do. Signed copies of this and his other titles are available at the Kaydee. The author is pictured with fan Jan et Parker during his visit to Clitheroe. (s)

However he hopes his latest one-

man show - at Stage and Screen @ St Mary’s on Saturday, November 24th - will be a big improvement on his last appearance in the town. Said Phil: “I was booked for the

pigeon fanciers’ dinner at the Swan and Royal in 1977.

A u th o r keeps 'em lau g h in g It was horrendous! We were in a

little back room, I did not have a proper PA system and it just went from bad to worse, a nightmare gig.” His new two-hour show will fea

ture some new experimental materi al: “My material is unique to me and my strange brain. I will be look ing at how we have dumbed down as a nation and Churchill’s reaction to it, with some help from the dog from the Churchill’s television advert. I will also be looking at visits to my doctors and being in a waiting room and dentistry.” And, of course, Phil will be paying his own special trib ute to Antipodean Rolf Harris. After the pair met some years ago, they became friends and enjoy a “Christmas card relationship”.
