Teen’s double-attack victim asks court to show some mercy
A CLITHEROE teenager launched a double attack on a man who he believed had been making “derogatory”
comments about his sister. Blackburn magistrates heard
th a t David Patrick Johnson punched and kicked Hans Pel- grom when he bumped into him in the street. The victim eventually got up
and walked away, but 20 min utes later he again chanced upon Johnson who again beat him, leaving him with a bloody nose, bleeding mouth and blurred vision. But despite his brutal treat
ment, Mr Pelgrom wrote a let ter to the court saying he didn’t believe his attacker deserved to go to prison. Miss Clare Knight (defend
ing) said Mr Pelgrom had responded to newspaper reports of the case by coming into her
Specialist accolades for experts in wine
REPRESENTATIVES of a successful Clitheroe family business travelled to London to pick up a major award. Andrew Byrne and his wife,
Wendy, attended the presenta tion of the International Wine Challenge 2007 awards. Renowned as the world's
most prestigious wine competi tion, D. Byrne and Co., of King Street, was nominated in 13 categories. The family run business won
four specialists categories for their wines, together with the North West Regional award. They were shortlisted in eight categories for specialist wines, together with the small inde pendent merchant of the year, which they have won on numer ous occasions in the past. Brothers Andrew, Philip and
Tim, who have been joined by Andrew's son, Joseph, continue to run the long-established business. Andrew and Wendy received the awards on the fam-
ily’s behalf at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, which was attended by wine royalty from all over the globe. In a ceremony similar to the "Oscars," Andrew had to mount the podium to receive his numerous awards. He told us that, although delighted by all the successes, winning the award for the country’s special ist Spanish wine merchant had
provoked the most pride. The Oberver’s wine
writer,Tim Atkin, was reported as saying: "If ever there was a wine shop created by wine lovers for wine lovers, this is it. What more can be said of D. Byrne and Co.” Our photograph shows

office and asking if he could make a retraction statement. When he was told that was not possible after a guilty plea had been entered, he went to the trouble of writing a letter in support of his assailant. “Mr Pelgrom has told one of
my colleagues that my client has apologised to him and he believes tha t to be a genuine apology,” said Miss Knight. Johnson (18), of Meadow
View, pleaded guilty to assault ing Mr Pelgrom and assaulting him causing actual bodily harm. He was given a four- month prison sentence, hut sus- pended for 12 months, and must observe a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m curfew for the next two months. He was also ordered to pay £500 in compensation to Mr Pelgrom and £60 towards costs. The court heard tha t after the first assault Mr Pelgrom
had met his girlfriend and they were walking down to Edisford Bridge when the second con frontation occurred. Miss Knight said her client
had confronted Mr Pelgrom about comments he believed Mr Pelgrom had been making about his sister. Mr Pelgrom had laughed these off, b u t Johnson later received further information which suggested the things said were worse than he had at first believed. “T hat was why he
approached the aggrieved on that night and he accepts that he lost his temper,” said Miss Knight. “He shouldn’t have taken it upon himself to sort things out and certainly not when he had been drinking.” Miss Knight said the second
meeting had been entirely acci dental when Johnson was on his way home.

ahead. An application to con
struct a two-storey block of 16 units a t Mitchell Street was granted per mission by members of the borough council’s planning committee. Conditions imposed on
the permission include parking spaces being made available before anyone moves in. Further details about bin storage areas, landscaping and samples of materials to be used for the walls and roof was also requested.

Village pub one of best places in country for food
A VALLEY eatery is one of the best places in the country to enjoy Sunday
lunch. According to one of the weekend
lifestyle magazines published in The Times, The Craven Heifer at Chaigley was third in the country. Langho’s Northcote Manor also made
it into the top 10. This is not the firs t time th a t the
Craven Heifer has made it into a Times food list. Previously it has been listed in the newspaper’s Gastro Pub guide. For the past three years Alison Ash
worth has run the front of house at the Chaigley pub, while head chef Nick Wharfe has taken charge of the kitchen. Said Alison: “This is the second time
that we have been featured in The Times. On this occasion they sent someone out
to eat here and they also had a website where people could vote for th e ir favourite place for Sunday lunch, so it was half down to the public and half to the mystery diner.” The dessert featured in The Times’
piece was Lancashire parkin with raisin honeyed syrup. Alison added that after the article appeared in The Times they were beseiged by hoards of customers.
