Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Ramblers’ quaint journey Family’s fund-raising thankyou!

ON an overcast, drizzly after noon, 14 Clitheroe Ramblers started from the unusual and quaint hamlet of Bell Busk towards Airton. Their route took them along

Kirk Syke Lane and arriving at Scotsthrop and then Airton, they noted the few pigeon lofts

built into some of the old hous es. From there they went down to the River Aire, looking at the large mill converted to flats, and along the Pennine Way. The group left the Way as they went over Haw Crag. The 4.5-mile walk was led by Mr John Whitehead.

A CLITHEROE family has raised more than £1,800 for two good causes. A bacon butty day, car boot sale and

three peaks walk helped members of the Whittaker family raise £1,857.40.

' The money has now been donated to

Ronald McDonald House and The Imag ine Appeal for Alder Hey Hospital. - Mrs Rebecca Whittaker explained why

these two good causes had been chosen: “This is where my son Simon had major

heart surgery two years ago, He had a large ventricular septal defect and an arterial septal

defect which was repaired through surgery. “We wanted to say thank you for all the

medical support, so we decided to fund raise. I would like to thank all who helped

. to raise this money. It will be used in two ways, one to help build some more bed rooms for families like us to stay in while their child is in hospital, and the other cheque will help to purchase more vital machines.” Our photograph shows the cheques

being presented, (s) For related articles, visit our website at

Fancy going on trip of lifetime?

YOUNG people in the Ribble Valley have just a few days to apply to go on the trip of a lifetime. Each year the Daniel Thwaites Travel

Scholarship enables a dozen young peo ple aged 18-20 to go from Lancashire on a cultural visit abroad, staying in the homes of local people. Next year's two-week trip, on July

23rd, will be to the ancient Indian city of Dehradun, nestling in the foothills of the Himalayas. The trip is organised by Daniel

Thwaites in conjunction with the Exper iment in International Living (EIL) which promotes cultural understanding by organising homestay trips abroad. The young people will take part in the

family life of their hosts and undertake some community work in the area where they are staying. Participants on the trip are recruited

via Lancashire County Council's Youth and Community Service according to area and gender to obtain a mix of young men and women from the whole county. In the Ribble Valley, young men

between 18 and 20 should contact Tim Bleazard on 01254 824544 or tim.hleazard@ed.lancscc.gov.uk. Applications should be in by Decem

ber 7th. There is also the opportunity and

place for one male and one female leader to support the group. Anyone who feels they have the expe

rience and skill to take a group of young people on this two week trip please con tact Gillian Lander.

E r r T m r r r MJ Jo’s diabetes talk One lucky reader will win all this.

A MEMBER of the Diabetes UK research team spoke at the Ribble Valley diabetic group meeting. Jo Brodie told members that the organ

isation sponsors research projects which have to meet specific targets for patients’ benefits before being approved. She added that local groups can “Adopt

a Project”. After answering questions she was thanked by chairman Mr G. Dixon.

Next to Tescos. Far beyond comparison.

Andrew’s real life teaching

LEARNING is about to become a real life hands-on experience at a Clitheroe high school. Mr Andrew Davidson, pic

tured, who scooped the nation al Edexcel Outstanding Voca tional Teacher Award during his time a t Skerton High School, Lancaster, is the new deputy headteacher at Rib- blesdale High School Technol ogy College. Bom and brought up in Set

tle, Yorkshire, Mr Davidson’s first job was at Eckington, in North Derbyshire, where he worked as a PE teacher between 1981 and 1987. His next move was to Lan

caster and Morecambe Col lege, where he lectured in sports studies, leisure and tourism and later began teach ing a GNVQ in that subject. He has also worked at Rhy-

ddings County High School, Oswaldtwistle, and is a former captain of Settle Cricket Club.

Within months of starting,

Mr Davidson has been work ing in conjunction with the Year 9 pupils who have set up their own travel company to sell tailor-made two centre breaks to pensioners from Bradford. The move is part of the pupils’ Leisure and Tourism course. Looking forward to his time

at Ribblesdale High, he says he is keen for pupils to move away from the old-fashioned approach of learning through textbooks in the classroom and instead gain experience from real-life scenarios. “I ’m here to provide oppor

tunities to young children,” he commented. “I would like to help the

school offer a richer education al experience for their young sters and by working in part nership with local businesses, I believe we can do this. It’s the best way of learning.” (A151007/1)
