Grindleton ease to emphatic win

Cowling....................................................2 Grindlelon............................................7 GRINDLETON bounced back in spec tacular fashion from last week’s disap pointment to hammer b ot tom side Cowling. By half-time the game was virtually

over as a contest as the visitors raced to a five-goal advantage. From the first whistle Grindleton

showed their intention, peppering the Cowling goal with shot after shot. The op en in g strike came v ia the

penalty sp o t , though, when winger Martin Dobson was unceremoniously dumped on his backside, allowing strik er Martin Cowey to claim the first of a well deserved hat-trick. Grindleton soon doubled their lead as

front pair Scott Fielding and Cowey linked up well to allow Fielding to glance a header past the flailing Cowl ing keeper. Fielding then claimed his second as

he rounded the keeper and coolly slid the ball home. Cowey then picked up his second,

and arguably the pick of the bunch, with a mazy run down the right wing,

before despatching a sublime strike which nestled in the back of the goal. Cowey then claimed his hat-trick

shortly before half-time, making sure at the third attempt after previous efforts from skipper Darren Barrow and mid

fielder Tony Middleton were snuffed out. In the second half, Cowling respond

ed and got on the scoresheet again via the penalty spot.

Cowling then pulled another back

with their second penalty of the game, after centre half Ryan Fawcett upend ed the Cowling striker. The game was never in doubt,

though, and when Dobson charged down the left wing to strike home the sixth goal of the afternoon, the visitors sealed the three points. However, the goal feast didn’t end

there as James Driver served up a tasty run and finish to cap an accomplished display and put the village side’s title charge back on track. On Saturday Grindleton travel to

Keighley to face Long Lee Juniors in the next round of the Northern Plant Hire Trophy.

Undefeated Wolves earn share of spoils

Knuzden Juniors . . .1 Wolves Under 8s . . .1 WOLVES remain unde feated after their titanic encounter against fellow high fliers Knuzden. The home side started

strongly, and early attempts to capitalise on their advan tage failed

against a strong Wolves defence. A near-perfect playing

surface enabled good football from both sides, and the deadlock was broken in the first minute of the second half, when striker Henry Derbyshire f inish ed well to give Knuzden the lead.

The young Wolves

were dominant for the remainder of the half, with no fewer than seven shots on target, but had to wait u n t il the final minute of the game, when Charlie Dewhurst almost burst the net with an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area.

CHARITY BID: Former Claret Andy Payton with fans Bill Proctor and Heather Trickett at his DVD signing ses sion at Shacklctons Garden Centre in aid of Pcndlcsidc Hospice. A01I207/3

Payton’s charity relaunch

CLARETS legend Andy Payton was in Chatburn on Saturday, relaunching his best-selling DVD in support of Pendleside Hos pice. “Natural Born Claret”

sells at £19-99, and the Whalley-born Turf Moor favourite has promised to donate £2-50 from each sale to the hospice., as he looks to raise £5,000 from

a 2,000-copy limited re-run of the special look at his prolific career. The DVD features more

than 100 of the Padiham Predator’s goals, including all 81 he bagged for Burn ley, along with interviews with former teammates and fans, as well as Adver tiser Sport reporter Chris Boden. To celebrate the release

he has embarked on a mini tour of venues across the borough to personally sign the DVDs, with Shackle- tons Garden Centre on Clitheroe Road the first stop on Saturday. He will be at Barden

Mill on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and at Asda, Princess Way, Burn ley, on Sunday, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Kaye Bartle, hospice

fund-raising manager, said: “As well as being the per fect present for Clarets fans, Andy was such a local legend it should appeal to many. “We are delighted that

he has decided to donate some of the proceeds from the sale of the DVD to Pendleside.”
