The school carol serv­ ice is a t 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Decem­ ber 19th, when the FSA will run a cake stall. School closes for the holidays at 1-45 p.m. on December 20th.


Festive fair Father Christmas opened the annual Christmas fair in St Mary's Parish Hall on Saturday after­ noon. The hall was filled with visitors and the stalls were packed with Christ­ mas gifts, toys, books, plants and wreaths, cakes and chocolates and Irish


Next Thursday, the children will enjoy their school Christ­ mas dinner and on Monday, December 17th, they will go on a school trip to see the panto “Jack and The Beanstalk”.


School Pupils at St Mary's RC School will per­ form their Christ­ mas production in school on Tuesday, December 11th, at 1-30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and on Friday, December 14th, they will go to Lit- tlemoor sheltered housing at 1-30 p.m. to present it for the residents there.

Children of the parish will make their first confessions next Wednesday, Decem­ ber 12th, in church from 7 p.m. Anyone else is welcome to take confession in preparation for Christmas.


The church is hosting get-togethers for Christians of all denominations dur­ ing Advent in the presbytery on Thursdays at 7 p.m. There will be a light meal followed by a hearty discussion and everyone is wel­ come.


St Mary’s The last two weeks' £20 bonus ball win­ ners a t St Mary's RC Church have been Mr Alan Dewhurst and Mr Peter White.


Tickets cost £3 and are available from Damian Buggie or Jane Sharpe. It is a “take your own drinks” evening.


Primary school Sabden Primary School children will hold their Christ­ mas concerts next Wednesday after­ noon and Thursday evening for parents, family and friends in the school hall. School parties will be held on Monday, December 17th, before the break up for the holidays on Wednesday, Decem­ ber 19th.


A good time was had by all, as they sang and danced the night away with a karaoke and disco.

Cricket awards Around 30 players and guests attended the Sabden Cricket Club annual presen­ tation night at the White Hart.


John Hargreaves won the Player-of-the- year Award.


A potato pie supper was made by Cheryl McCullough of the White Hart.


SAWLEY Tomises .


A wonderful promise auction evening, organised by Mrs Janet Cosgrove, was held in Sawley Vil­ lage Hall. The evening began with comedian Jay Ryan entertaining a large audience.


The next event is a Christmas fair on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be art and crafts stalls, mulled wine and home-made cakes.


SIMONSTONE


Toy service Pupils of St Peter’s Primary School, Simonstone will be holding a family and toy service in church on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Out and about A video evening is being held in Sim­ onstone Old School hall tomorrow at 7- 30 p.m. by Mr Ron Harrison and Burn­ ley Camcorder Club. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children, with a hot­ pot supper included.


SLAIDBURN


Whist drive Whist winners at the drive held in Slaid-


Thanks were expressed to Mrs Cosgrove for organ­ ising the event and ensuring there were so many wonderful promises, and also to Mr Gatty and Mr Rogers for encouraging so many bids.


Mr Rupert Gatty and Mr Steve Rogers were auctioneers for a wealth of promis­ es, ranging from barrow loads of horse manure to a 4D baby scan. The highest bid was for a dinner party, and in total the evening raised over £3,300, a welcome boost to village hall funds.


Paul McKenna col­ lected the Clitheroe League Bradlow Trophy, which was shared with Chip­ ping Cricket Club following the aban­ donment of the final in September due to the horrific injury suffered by skipper John Hargreaves.


The Christmas whist and domino drive is on December 22nd.

The hymns, chosen by the candidates, included Kumbaya, the Lord of the Dance, and Love Divine. The Bible readers were Rachel Harrison for the youngsters and Jane Dickinson for the adult candidates.


The baptism and con­ firmation service was followed by a first communion for the candidates.


Eight youngsters and three adults were presented to Bishop Hope to be con­ firmed. He also bap­ tised one of the young, all in front of a congregation of family and friends who numbered over 160.


Service The St Andrew's Day service in St Andrew's Church- was different this year. There is usual­ ly a few loyal wor­ shippers to remem­ ber the patron saint, but this year theRt Rev. Dr David Hope, formerly the Archbishop of York, was welcomed to the confirmation service.

Christingles Children will gather in Whalley Parish Church at 5 p.m. on Saturday to make Christingles in readiness for the Christingle service

Stray kitten A kitten aged about 10 to 12 weeks and well-cared for has been found wander­ ing near Whalley Library. The animal is now in the care of Whalley Vets, who say it will be easy enough to find it a a home, but wish it to be returned to its owners. The vets' number is 01254 53622.

Bethany bake


Six pupils in Year 5 at Whalley Primary School, Ellie-Mae O'Neill, Bryony Fisher, Chloe Wilkinson, Eliza Trickett, Ysabel Carter, and Danielle Jacks, raised £110 for the Bethany Project by selling cakes they had baked.


The fund-raising effo- erts for Barnardo's has raised about £825 “to help Barnardo's give clil- dren a brighter future”.

Fair total The Christmas fair in Whalley School on Saturday raised £1,730 to be divided between the general fund of Whalley Parish Church and the servery appeal.


Senior citizens Because of other commitments, there will be no games evening for Whalley senior citizens on Saturday. The final social evening of the year will be on December 15th in the Meth-odist Church hall at 6.30 and the first one of the new year will be on January 12th.

A collection to pay for the flowers for the Christmas festival is being made in a bas­ ket at the back of the church.


Nativity play Rehearsals for the Nativity play “It’s a Baby” at the Eng­ lish Martyrs' RC Church are taking place on Sundays after mass and on Thursdays at 4-30 p.m.


The SVP Mass is on Sunday at 2-30 p.m., to be followed by the party in the presbytery.


Successful bidders at the auction at the Merry Berry Ball are requested to send in their cheques, made payable to “Friends of Whalley School” by tomorrow.

Another round of Christmas offers at Morrisons


Two piglets have been bought through CAFOD, thanks to money raised by the Thursday Group. These will go to wherever they are needed to provide food or for breeding.


Salsa A demonstration of salsa dancing, in which the audience was invited to take part, formed part of the entertainment in Whalley Village Hall on Saturday.


This was the last Rural Touring show until February 2nd.


The costumed per­ formers brought music from Brazil to the hall as well as two very realistic donkeys, which rolled their eyes at the audience.
