Festive cake contest launches show
THE judging of the annual festive fairy cake competition for Ribble Valley Borough Council has taken place. This year around a dozen entries were submit
ted by council staff, along with their family and friends. The task of judging the tasty treats fell to
Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Doreen Taylor, who awarded first prize to Helen Bolton, the coun
cil’s printing officer. The fairy cake competition took place at the Platform Gallery in Station Road Clitheroe to help launch the annual Christmas exhibition. This year called “Compilation”, it features
handcrafted items from more than 100 artists. Our photograph shows the Mayor and her
consort, Mr Gordon Taylor, judging the fairy cake competition. (T041107/4)

Cheers to our latest lucky winner
CHRISTMAS has come early for our latest competi tion winner, Mr Vincent Ash worth, of Henthorn Road, Clitheroe. A keen fan of p or t and
Madeira, so much so that during his holidays he visited both the Port house of War- res and the Madeira house of Blandys, he was delighted with his win and said: "Drinking it in the festive season will bring back many happy memories." His prize, presented by our
wine writer Mike Murdoch, was three bottles of Otima 10-year-old Tawny Port, which is packed with honey, fruit and nut flavours making it an ideal after dinner drink or to be different served chilled as an aperitif. He also wins three bottles
of Blandy's Alvada, five- year-old, from the island of Madeira, ideal as an accom paniment to rich fruit cake, dark chocolate puddings and some cheeses. Second place winner is
M a rtin Nolan, of Chapel Close, West Bradford, who receives two bottles of Oti- man Port and two bottles of Alvada Madeira. Third prize goes to Sally Cole, of Hip- pings Way, Clitheroe, who receives one bottle of each. The correct answer to the
question was the Symington Family/Group who were the
generous sponsors of the competition. Although a fairly new resi
dent in the Ribble Valley, Mr Ashworth is also a keen advo cate of the Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times. Pictured is Mike Murdoch

The money, which includes a

Christie representatives at a fund raising Hallowe-e’n party at Three Rivers Woodland Park, in West Bradford. Most of the fund-raising is led by
resident Beryl Statham, who spends her week at her home in Milnrow, Rochdale, and her weekends at the residential park - the majority of the time running fund-raising events. This year’s donation takes the
Three Rivers’ total to £50,112 and Beryl is delighted to pass the £50,000 landmark target she set herself when she started. She said: “We are thrilled to be successful, but now we've hit our target we will carry on collecting for Christie's because it’s so worthwhile.”
