International spotlight shines on Valley gallery

A COLLECTION of pictures by local and international artists is under the spotlight at a Ribble Val

ley art gallery. Julie and Chris McCabe, who run Art

Decor, Whalley, invited guests for the preview of the distinctive collection and were delighted with the turnout and pos itive feedback on the evening. “We have been especially delighted and proud to welcome the work of Man

cunian artist Geoffrey Key, who has made a great impact at the gallery with his distinctive, imitable and instantly recognisable style,” they said. Work by Hollywood ar tis t Todd

White, whose originals are collected by many A-list celebrities, were also on show, as well as pictures by local artist

David Mellor. Sandra and Harry Marshall, of Black

burn, were the winners of an original pastel by Elaine Cooper, who talked to

guests on the evening. Elaine’s latest col lection has been influenced by the hills and farms of the Ribble Valley together with her memories of country fairs and fanners’ markets. She also used the preview evening to

introduce a more contemporary slant on her popular theme of crooked houses and shops, using stronger and more vibrant colours. The exhibition runs until this coming Saturday, December 8th.

Head full of praise

for recorder concert YOUNGSTERS from Whalley Prima ry School were in fine tune during their most recent performance. The school’s recorder group, accom

panied by headteacher Mr Brian Beresford, performed a concert of var ied music at the opening of the Whal ley Abbey Fellowship Coffee Morning. The 10 talented pupils have already

reached a high standard of perform ance and demonstrated their skill to an appreciative audience that included many of their parents. The concert included a variety of

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, December 6th, 2007 5 Make a child smile this Christmas by Natalie Cox

CHRISTMAS is now less than three weeks away, but there is still time to donate items to our annual Toy Appeal. Salvation Army officers Capt.

Elizabeth Smith and Lt Brenda Wise are delighted at the quality of presents th a t they have already received. Since the appeal launched three

weeks ago, bags packed with gifts have been delivered to both the Sal vation Army shop in Lowergate and the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times office in King Street. Every festive season since 2004 we have tried to supply brand new gifts But we still need more - particu

larly items which can be handed out to boys and girls between the ages of nine and 12. Remember, all the presents donat ed to this appeal must be brand new.

Malcolm’s Highland experience

IN his f inal visit to Clitheroe Naturalists ' Society meeting before retirement Mr Malcolm Roberts presented a delightful audio-visual entitled “A Highland Experience”. In a succession of

superb slides the audience saw the landscape of tow ering mountains and reflections mirrored in the lochs mainly of the west and north of Scot land. Slides began with the

Isle of Arran where the ascent of Goat Fell pre sented difficulties for the climber. This contrasted with

shots of the ruined castle of Lochranza at the north

of the island. Glencoe provided dramatic views of its tu rb u len t past, including the memorial to the massacre. Then followed the road

to Mallaig and the Sands of Morar. The new bridge to Skye

introduced the rugged ness of its fantastic mountains. Also included were the

famous gardens of Inverewe flourishing in the Gulf Stream's milder climate. Here were tropical

plants along close-ups of rhododendrons. Many waterfalls were a

feature of the programme some in narrow gorges and others with details of

the fanlike p a t te rn of spray. The coast of the North

West corner was the sub ject of particularly diffi cult ascents and the stacks showed the eroding power of the sea. Accompanying the

visuals, traditional folk music provided a back ground. Finally, the chairman

thanked Mr Roberts for the spectacularly beauti ful presentation all in blue skies and calm waters. The next lecture in

Clitheroe Library will be tonight at 7-30 p.m. when Dr Irene Ridge's subject will be based on “Wild Orchids”.

For many of the children that we

help this is the only time of the year when they get something that is not second hand. We want to make sure they have a magical day by unwrap ping something that is extra special. Books, games, toys and toiletry

items are among the donations we have already received. Capt. Elizabeth Smith, of

Clitheroe Salvation Army, said: “The gifts that have already come in have been absolutely excellent, but we still need general toys for children of all ages. “The community spirit in the Rib

ble Valley is absolutely unbelievable - the way people rally round to help those th a t are less fortunate than themselves.” The last official date for donating

presents is next Thursday - Decem ber 13th - to give Capt. Smith and Lt Brenda Wise the chance to sort the gifts and deliver them in time for Christmas.
