GRINDLETON
Parishioners of St Ambrose Church, are reminded that there will be no service in Grindleton on Sun day, instead there MU be a joint service in St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Bolton-by- Bowland at 10-30 a.m.During the month of August the Sunday morning services will be held alternately with St Peter and St Paul’s.
Village cricket On Sunday Grindleton played host to Greg- son Cricket Club. The Lancaster based club, whose side include many well- known thespians, arrived at Grindle ton, to see the ground bathed in sunshine. To the surprise of no one Grindleton skip per Crossland lost the toss. Gregson invited the home-side to bat
first.The home-side got off to a poor start, when Middle- brough returned to the pavilion before most spectators had taken their seats. Ainsworth, the elder statesman of the club, was joined at the crease by the youngest member of the side, Charlie Jackson. Both bats men played with extreme caution, as the wicket showed a lack of consistency. Ainsworth (12) and Jackson (7) both fell victim to McCallis- ter, and with 20 overs gone the score stood at 37. In the space of two overs skipper Crossland and Tay- lor(22) doubled the score.

HURST.; ■g r e e n ;
Wl undies Members of Hurst Green WI were treat ed to a fascinating talk by Mrs June Comer on the history of underwear. She brought along a Mary Poppins style bag and just kept bringing out example after example of knickers, corsets, stays, bloomers and the like, most hand made and beautifully finished.
She
explained that knickers only began to be worn in the early 1800's and there was no elastic for another 50 years or so. Early bras bore no resemblance to the anatomy of the wear er! Mrs Corner showed examples right up to the pres ent day which were tiny by comparison, but do not hold the same romance as the hand-made pair of combinations. The competition for a pair of knickers was won by Mrs Christine Sunderland with a pair of children's handmade Victorian bloomers, Mrs Rita Holden expressed thanks.
The show of aggression continued with Nut- tall (29), Mills (11) and Hutchinson (22 n.o.) supporting the skipper. Crossland’s sparkling half centu ry enabled the home- side to post a total of 177.
After tea Gregson set about the task of scoring 178 for victo ry, However, the Grindleton bowlers made life very diffi cult for them. Hutchinson’s five over spell saw him concede just four runs. The bowling remained tight throughout, and at the halfway stage Gregson had scored 34 runs, for the loss of three wickets. Only McCallister(56 n.o.) looked up for a fight. The home-side field ed keenly, a ffne stop

Playground An exciting plan to refurbish the play ground in Hurst Green has been launched by the parish council, and they need the help of villagers. The revamp is going to cost more than £27,000 and the parish council has only got until the end of March next year to raise the necessary funds.
Ribble Valley Borough Council has given a huge fillip to the plan by granting £15,169- but that is only on condition that the council and the vil lage raise enough to bring the fund up to £25,000. If they fail the council grant Mil be reduced propor tionally. To try and raise the rest of the money in the time available the parish council has applied to Awards for All for a further grant but is also asking the people of the parish and particularly those with businesses, to sponsor items of equipment in the new playground.
The whole scheme is explained in a leaflet included with Round the Green which will be with most house holds next week, and parish, council chair man Coun. Peter Butterfield is appeal ing to everyone, including the organi sations in the village, to give generously.
Toddler group To complete the end of the school year Hurst Green Toddler Group held a Teddy Bear's picnic at their meet ing. A home-made hot lunch was provid ed for the 25 children, and bacon rolls and home-made choco late fudge cake were in abundance for the mothers and carers. The entertainment was provided by Mr Jolly, whose puppets were enjoyed by the children. Games were played and prizes where given out. Tod dler Group will not be meeting through the holidays due to the work at the Memorial Hall. The first meeting of the new term will be on Thursday, September 6th. Details of the group can be found on the Hurst Green
