Tamura never dies I

F you are looking for a sporty medium-range family car and the kind of person who just

can’t help themselves when it comes to ticking extra cost option boxes, then this test demands your attention. The Mazda6 Tamura is priced

at £15,995 - just £315 more than the standard TS model while offer ing customers £3,441 worth of additional equipment; a saving of £3,126. Those are the facts - and here

are a few more. The equipment list includes almost everything you wouldn’t expect for this kind of money. For example, a body- coloured sports styling kit, front fog lamps integrated into the head lights and unique ‘Tamura’ exteri or badging. This model comes with twin chrome exhausts, 17in. alloy wheels and a choice of three colours - Stormy Blue Mica, Tungsten Grey Mica or Silver Contrail Metallic exterior paint finish - a t no extra charge. Only 1,200 examples will be

made. If th a t ’s whetted your appetite, you also need to know th at the Tamura comes with all the items you’d expect on the stan dard TS modeL That means electric heated door

mirrors, a radio/CD with steering wheel controls, black/blue interior trim, a ‘piano black’ centre console, climate control air conditioning, electric windows front and rear, a leather wrapped steering wheel, geaknob and handbrake lever, remote central locking and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser. On the road, although the steer

ing is a little overassisted, the helm is seriously quick. Flick this Mazda6 into a corner and you’ll marvel a t the body control and the reserves of grip. Body roll is well controlled as is

the sort of pitching th at often affects this class of car when accel

erating or braking. I t feels supremely stable a t motorway speeds, shrugging off crosswinds with disdain, but it’s here that the sporting bias can wear a little thin, the firm ride and both wind and tyre noise making it a little less cosseting than a big mileage spe cialist like a Vectra. I t ’s easy to form the impression

that the Mazda is just looking for an exit slip and an opportunity to plaster a big smile across your face at the subsequent roundabout. I t ’s that sort of car. The 145b.h.p. 2.0-litre 16-valve

engine used isn’t the punchiest unit of its type but it’s still enough to break 62m.p.h. in 9.7 seconds en route to a top speed of 131m.p.h.. Fuel economy in is perhaps better than the sporting looks would lead you to believe, with an average of 36m.p.g. and the realistic 9E insur ance rating will claw back some of the margin against higher rated but more economical choices like an equivalent Ford Mondeo or Peugeot 407. The neatly sculpted aluminium-look centre console, the big-button stereo and the sharp hooded look of the fascia all resem ble Mondeo, but instead of the

remainder being a watered down version of Ford’s class leader, it’s refreshing to note that Mazda have pitched in with some genuinely pleasant touches of their own. The steering wheel could have

cribbed from the standard Pas- sat/Mondeo mould, but instead it’s a neat three-spoke item. Likewise, the controls on the

centre console don’t ape the Euro mainstream. This could only ever be a Japan-'

ese car, but akin to the Nissan Primera, it revels in its origins instead of trying to be something i t ’s not. At night the minor con trols glow a wicked red hue, giving the cabin an inviting feel good fac tor. Interior space is a strong point,

swoopy styling notwithstanding. The steering wheel and drivers seats ad ju s t in a multitude of directions, making i t easy for almost anybody to get comfort able. There’s decent space in the back and you’ll appreciate the internal width when travelling three up in the rear. There are a number of handy

cubbies around the cabin, includ ing one atop the dashboard that is

unfortunately a little fiddly to operate. Like standard Mazda6 models, the Tamura hatchback features a ‘one-touch’ karakuri sys tem to fold th e entire rear seat structure. I t instantly creates a completely f lat load floor simply by pulling one handle for each of the seat backs providing a 60/40 split. Safety-wise, equipment levels

include driver and front passenger airbags, plus an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) backed by Electron ic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) for shorter stopping dis tances and safer braking control. The Mazda is also unique in its class for having security-etched windows. How to put this car into perspec

tive? Probably the best way is to point out th at for approximately the same money, you could have a weedy 1.6-litre petrol-powered and sparsely-equipped Ford Mondeo 1.6i Edge And that an entry level Vauxhall Vectra wouldn’t be much cheaper. Need any more persuad ing? Then you probably don’t need this car....
