Kicking a car lands pedestrian in court

A MAN driving home from work who swerved to avoid a couple walking in the road had his car kicked by one of them as

he went past. Blackburn magistrates heard

that Steven Paul McDonald caused more than £500 worth of damage to the car. He was initially offered a caution

on condition that he paid the com pensation, but taken to court when he failed to pay. McDonald (27), of Spring Mead

ows, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to criminal damage. He was made subject to a condi

tional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £544 in compensa tion plus £60 towards prosecution costs. Mr Philip Potter (prosecuting)

said Mr Stewart Taylor was driving along Whalley Road when he saw a male and a female walking in the road. He slowed down and eventu ally had to swerve to avoid them. “As he passed he was travelling at

about 5 m.p.h. and the male kicked the back passenger door of his car,” said Mr Potter. He said Mr Taylor stopped his car- and got out and there was a struggle. Mr Basharat Ditta (defending)

said while the aggrieved said he had to drive round the couple, the defen dant maintained that he and his girlfriend were nearly run over. “The driver got my client in a

headlock and took him to the ground while the police were called,” added Mr Ditta.

A great life under scrutiny Hospital

THE life and achievements of Isambard Kingdom Brunei were examined by speaker Mr John Sims at the Clitheroe and District Probus meeting. Entitled: “Brunei - Gambler

or Genius?” his digital slide presentation included many photographs of Brunei’s engi neering masterpieces - bridges, tunnels and ships designed and built during his lifetime from 1806 to 1859. Educated at Hove and then in Paris he assisted his father in building the Thames TunneL In 1829 Brunei designed a

suspension bridge to cross the River Avon at Clifton, but due to his premature death and funding problems he never saw

it completed. His work on the wide gauge railway established him as one of the world's leading engineers. He designed the "Great West

ern” steamship, launched in 1838 and then the largest in the world. Two other steamships were designed and built, the Great Britain and the Great Eastern. While watching the sea trials of the Great Eastern, Brunei had a stroke and died. The club meets on the first

and third Friday morning of the month, at the Pendle Club in Lowergate, Clitheroe. The next meeting is the summer lunch tomorrow, with a normal meet ing on August 17th. Inquiries to 01200 429207.
