EXTRA seating had to be arranged in Whalley Methodist Church on Sunday evening when a packed con gregation gathered to say “farewell” to Mr Mark Sleet and his wife, Karen, the Rev. Stephen Foster and the Rev. Chris Cheeseman and his wife, Anne, as they move to new call
ings. Mr Sleet, for eight years having pas
toral care of the Methodist churches in Waddington and Grindleton now awaits his next appointment. Mr Foster, cur rently a full-time journalist, looks after
Chatburn Methodist Church and is soon to commence training to become a full time minister. Mr Cheeseman, the Clitheroe Circuit Superintendent Minis ter based at Whalley for the past 10 years, moves to the South Fylde Circuit, Lytham St Anne’s. Early in the service a most moving
announcement was made explaining why the church bells which could be heard as people arrived. In a tribute to the close co-operation between Whalley Parish Church and Whalley Methodist Church, a special peal had been rung on the bells of St Mary’s to coincide with the arrival
of the congregation 200 metres away at the Methodist church. Conducted by the Rev. Geoffrey Ped-
die, the service included many tributes and presentations from members of the Grindleton, Chatburn and Whalley churches and also from the Rev. Stephen Poxon, district chairman. After the service, refreshments were
served and there was opportunity to make individual farewells - sad to lose such valuable and hardworking friends but happy that, as is the way in the Methodist world, it was “au revoir” rather than “goodbye”.
