Clitheroe land summer title

NEIL Reynolds will fight for the right to play alongside his players this season. Competition for places is at an

all-time high at the club, such is the strength of the squad, but the play er-coach isn't about to take a back seat and will be vying for a place in the side just like everyone else. Joint player-manager Pete Smith

will only play when needed, but both are prepared to roll up their sleeves and take a hands on approach. Saturday's 4-1 win over Vodkat

First Division side Ramsbottom United saw both in action. Reynolds played the full game and also netted the final goal set up by his fellow manager and an out-field Peter Collinge. He said: “I’ve still got dynamite

in the old boots yet. I enjoyed it, my first 90 minutes, and I scored with my left foot, my first goal for a while and probably my first ever goal in a Clitheroe shirt with that foot. “I’ve gotten over my injuries and

V-

I will be pushing for a first team place this season. Pete has said he will only play when he’s needed but I’ll be competing for a place - look ing at the squad we’ve got, though, i t ’s going to be hard to break through!" He added: “It was the first time

we’ve played someone below us in pre-season and with us as favourites and them underdogs it was difficult to play against. “Ramsbottom raised their game

and made life difficult for us a t ' first, but eventually we settled and our match fitness came through." And Reynolds was pleased to see

Gary Jackson, David Dempsey and new signing Keiran Fletcher get on the scoresheet too. “No one was going to take the

ball off Jacko," said the Blues boss. "As soon as he went down the lads wanted him to have the penalty. It was a great relief for him to hit the back of the net and hopefully that will be the catalyst as his move ment and fitness are coming back like the Jacko of old. “Keiran's come from Bacup and

he’s impressed in a number of posi tions at centre half, right back and centre midfield. He’s given us options and it was good to have him in the squad and see a defender up for a set piece. “David Dempsey laid that goal

on and then sublimely chipped the keeper for his penalty.” Clitheroe face Preston side New Longton Rovers on Saturday for a more relaxing friendly! Admission is just £3 with £2 concessions, and, depending on the weather, a barbe cue is planned for players and fans alike afterwards. Then on Tuesday night Clitheroe welcome old rivals and

UniBond Premier League hot favourites Fleetwood Town to Shawbridge for what is sure to be another testing fixture. Reynolds said: “Fleetwood have

signed a few in pre-season, we all know they are fantastically finan cially well-backed and their man ager Tom Greenwood has done exceptionally well with back to back promotions from the North West Counties and our league. “They’re a very capable, physi

cal side and it will be another big test and a good game to pit us against. There is always a good friendly rivalry between the fans whenever the two teams meet and we’d expect them to bring a few." He added: “Will Exton will be

back from holiday but Joel Byrom and Chris Ward probably won’t play Saturday as they've got nig gling injuries. “Stanno (Paul Stansfield) will

feature if training goes well this week as with just three weeks left he has to get involved now if he is to compete for a place when the season starts." Saturday's game against New Longton h i a 3 p.m. kick-off and Tuesday's fixture against Fleet- wood gets underway at 7-30 p.m. © Clitheroe FC are looking for a new programme editor for the forthcoming season. Anyone inter ested in the position should contact club secretary Colin Wilson (01200 424370).

Athletes triumph ‘Power’ display!

TRIUMPHANT young Ribble Valley athletes have returned from the Lan cashire Youth Games with the prestigious gold medal for athletics. Ribble Valley entered

nine teams for the event, which was held at Stanley Park, Blackpool, and the athletics team, run by Rib ble Valley Borough Coun cil’s sports development department and the Ribble Valley Athletics Club, duly won the gold medal for ath letics. • The council’s sports

development officer, Tom Bamber, said: “We took over 100 young people, as well as team managers and volunteers, to the Lan cashire Youth Games,

which was our biggest ever representation. “Congratulations go to

all our young sportsmen and women for their ster ling efforts, but particularly to our athletics team for returning from the games with the coveted gold medal.” Ribble Valley Mayor,

Coun. Doreen Taylor, added: “Young people get so much unwarranted criti cism so it is fantastic that our youngsters have returned from the Lan cashire Youth Games with this prestigious accolade. “I look forward to their

continued progress and, who knows, perhaps we will see some of them at the London Olympics!”

TWO of darts’ greatest global superstars are set to appear at the Mytton Fold next month. Phil “The Power” Tay

lor has won 13 World Championship titles, making him the most suc cessful player in history. He will be joined at

Mytton Fold by protege Adrian “Jackpot” Lewis, a former British teenage champion and a rapidly rising darts rookie who has leapt into the world top 10 in just 18 months. And the pair are set to

toe the oche on Thursday, September 13th with the action getting underway at 7-30 p.m. with doors opening an hour earlier. Not only that, but 20

lucky members of the audience will get the chance to get up on stage and play with them. As well as this wonder

ful exhibition of darts, there will be a signed sports memorabilia auc tion, with the action over seen by MC Paul Booth. There are a limited

number of tickets for this prestigious event, priced at £15. However, for only £90,

you can have a fantastic package including even more than just world darts legends -18 holes of golf, an evening meal, ticket for the darts and bed and breakfast. Paul Booth can be con tacted on 07775 861461.

CLITHEROE Ladies Hockey Club had much to celebrate as they were crowned Summer League Champions with a crushing 9-1 win in their final game against Garstang. The Ribble Valley locals went

into their fixture knowing that the league was very tight at the top and three teams could have clinched the trophy on the final day. Clitheroe have been in

tremendous form since week one carrying on their success from becoming Lancashire First Divi sion champions in the winter league. Their first game was against

old rivals, Blackburn based team Witton warriors. This was a very physical game and after coming from two goals down, Clitheroe fought back with two excellent penalty comer routines from Judith Hunter to take a share of the points. Week two was always going to

be a highly competitive game against Garstang who were still grieving from having the First Division title snatched from them on the final day. After a very even first five

minutes Clitheroe opened the scoring form skipper Laverty who smashed an unstoppable penalty comer into the goal. This opened the flood gates

for Clitheroe who raced into a 3- 0 lead with goals from Horsfall and Collins, before going further ahead in the second half with further goals from Horsfall and Collins A good sjiell of play from

Garstang saw them add to the scoreline leaving them 5-1

behind, only for Horsfall to have a purple patch and fin ish off the match with three more goals giving Clitheroe an overwhelming victory. The week after was a

game against Brookfields and Clitheroe brought in some of their under 16 girls for an easy 4-0 win with goals from Teece and Box Morton, before another trademark penalty corner from Laverty sealed the three points. In week four Clitheroe

had potentially a very tricky game against a young skillful Springfields seconds. But another dominant

display saw them coast to a 4-1 victory, goals coming from Horsfall, Laverty and Box Morton. Clitheroe then played

Leyland and this game was very even throughout until the final five minutes when Under 15s county player Teece stunned the Leyland defence and fired the ball through the keeper’s legs to give her side another three points. So, sitting nicely at the

top of the league, the side continued its run against Chorley. Clitheroe scored in the

first minute and produced a training type match which ended in a resounding 8-1 win. Goals came from Box, Allen, Teece and Horsfall. A 2-0 win against Pre

a solid defensive display in 9--------

ston, followed by a 3-0 win against Leyland to put Clitheroe in a strong posi tion at the top. Southport were next and

the first half kept the game tight at just 1-0 to Clitheroe. A stunning second half

followed from the league leaders and saw them run out comfortable 5-0 win ners. Goals came from Horsfall, Griffiths, and the youngest player in the team, Tasha Fell. Fulwood conceded victo

ry, setting up their final win against Garstang seconds which was a crushing 9-1 win that secured yet anoth er title for Clitheroe Hockey Club. This is the eighth piece of

silverware the club has won over the last three years and they hope that the coming season can bring more. Clitheroe have other

tournaments coming up over the next couple of months, most notably their own annual tournament on September 1st, the Cannon Chard Tournament, named after the late Eric Cannon Chard of Clitheroe If anyone would like to
