■ CHATBURN lost out by 29 runs to Barrowford. Hie Craven Cricket League

Second Division game saw the villagers win the toss and Rod Booth dominate the bowling with 6-49. However, Barrowford

opener Nigel Hargreaves put on enough runs with his effort of 45 to post a cred itable 125-7. In reply Chatburn's Nick

Hutchinson (38) and David Price (24) got the side off to a good start only to see Harg reaves prove just as good with the ball to reap 8-16. Only Paul Craig (12 not

out) scooped double figures outside the two openers as Chatbumwereoutfor96. Meanwhile the seconds

had an excellent 42-run win over Riddlesden to remain third in the league. The villagers batted first

on a difficult wicket and were bowled out for 106. Henry Kay (39) was the top

scorer and there were useful contributions from Mark Holmes (16) and Geoff Lam bert (14). In reply excellent bowling from Lambert (7-38) and Chris Mulhearn (3-22) reduced Riddlesden to 64 all oul

B CLITHEROE Cobras Under 13s A had a convincing victo ry against Whatley A Batting first, Clitheroe lost

early wickets and looked set for a poor total until Liam Nuttall (32) took control and played a superb innings of powerful shots. As a result, no further

wickets were lost and Clitheroe ended with a total of 69 off their 16 overs. Other good contributions came from Kay (12) and Banks (15). In reply Whailey were

never in a position to threat en due to some excellent bowling and fielding from Clitheroa In particular the leg spin of Banks (3-2) left Whai ley struggling. Further wickets from Bow-

ness (1-7), Parkinson (1-2) and Houldsworth (1-8) enabled the Cobras to run out comfortable winners.

H THE Clitheroe and District Midweek Cricket League took a break from league action and saw the semi-finals of both cup competitions. LowMoorcameoutontop

against previously unbeaten Waggon and Horses in a low scoring game. Low Moor batted first and

were all out for 65. This proved more than enough as Waggon were out for 56. In the final Low Moor will

meet Rimington who came out on top in a very close game against Calderstones. Rimington batted first and

reached 104-6 with P. Bishop scoring 30. In reply, the hospital side

were always up with the required rate thanks largely to K. Gill who retired on 30, and with his retirement, the Rimington bowlers managed to restrict Calderstones to 102-7. In the Supplementary Cup,

Chipping A scored 134-3 against St James before restricting the church side to 70 all out. In the final they will meet Sabden or Chipping Ramblers.

WHALLEY picked up maximum points against hotly-tipped Blackburn Northern on Saturday before dispatch ing victory over derby opponents Read on Sunday to move fourth in the table. Bradman Ediriweera and David

O'Neill led the way on Saturday before captain Martin Davies showed how it was done against Read. O'Neill took 4-26 and the Whailey

paid man 3-20 as Blackburn were reduced to 124 all out. The best efforts form the visiting

side were seen from mid-order batsman Ahmed Patel (46) and professional Devendrasingh Bundela (26). Declan Fitzhenry also got in on the

act with two wickets of his own (2-33), with the third dismissal of the day taken by Neil Cordingley (1-20). In reply Ediriweera top-scored with

37 runs, which included three bound aries, starting alongside Davies (12), before Cordingley (26 not out) and Richard Palmer (10 not out) conclud ed the innings to see the side home by seven wickets. The following day Whailey had to be

on top of their game to beat Read hav ing seen Will Driver (55) and Whailey Road sub-professional Hanif Ur Rehman (62) both score half centuries to post 223-8 having elected to bat first. The professional's 50 came in just 39

minutes off 41 balls and featured nine fours and a six, while Driver's came in 94 minutes off 76 balls thanks to five fours and two sixes. The innings also saw considerable

efforts from Terry Little (21), Chris Holt (34) and Kyle O'Connor before a mid-order collapse took the wind out of Read's sails. O'Neill was again chief wicket taker

with 4-87, with 2-39 from Declan Fitzhenry and one from Ediriweera (1- 37). But it was Whalley's reply that real

ly saw the ball slammed about as open er Davies struck 89 not out, featuring 11 boundaries and a six, as Read field ed badly. Fellow opener Ediriweera made 18

before he was caught by Frank Barden off the bowling of fellow paid man, first class Pakistan professional Rehman. But Lee Kearsley was on fire for his

74 runs off 77 balls as he struck eight fours and five sixes to take the score to 162-4 at his exit to Andrew Rushton. Leaving the undefeated Cordingley

(37 not out) to close with his captain as Whailey scooped 224-2 from less than 42 overs. On Saturday Whailey are away at Edenfield, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

Bolton in top form

NEIL Bolton smashed Settle to all parts of Chatburn Road on Saturday in Clitheroe’s four wicket win. The veteran former captain had 222-

6 to overcome having seen their oppo nents take advantage of some under- par bowling and fielding. Visiting professional Jeevantha

Kulatunga, who was dropped on zero by Danny Turner behind the stumps, had struck 81. And old-timer Andrew Davidson hit

a steady 38 followed by a quick-fire 42 from Tim Green. Clitheroe's Josh Marquet had

bowled ferociously and taken two wick ets (2-58), as had Mark Hargreaves (2- 46), but the score crept up. So in reply Clitheroe had to give a

good chase and thanks to a colossal effort with the bat from Bolton victory was theirs. His 96 not out was a well balanced, thinking-man's innings where not one

' V V V * O V ♦ ♦

chance was given. Several boundaries and sixes late in

his innings kept the Chatburn Road side in the game with a run-rate of about six per over for the last 10. Despite paid man Michael Papps

being run out early on for 13 and both Peter Dibb (5) and Jack Dewhurst (4) going cheaply, Turner ably supported Bolton with 37 and he too smashed numerous boundaries to keep up the chase. Captain Daniel Glover, in for the

absent Simon Coulter, had a quick-fire 26 before Hargreaves (11) and the awe some Bolton, who was middling every thing towards the end of the innings, took the Chatbum Road side past the target. The feat couldn't be repeated for

Sunday's trip to Baxenden. Coulter stepped back in as captain

and wicket keeper and Bolton typically went for a duck following the previous day's heroics. Fellow opener Papps didn't fair

much better as he was trapped leg- before by David Parkinson for 16. In fact Peter Dibb proved the best

with the bat with his 35 and the only other to reach double figures was Coul ter (14) as the rest of the order was removed after two or three overs apiece, the best of the rest being Glover with eight. Baxenden professional Jonathan

Fielding and Andrew Marshall took the team apart with their bowling, the former returning 4-36 and the last change bowler 4-21 as Clitheroe were all out for 118. In reply wickets didn't come quite as

easily for the locals. Marquet (1-30), Hargreaves (1-42)

and Papps (1-14) each took one but the troublesome Parkinson (51 not out) and Fielding (46) saw the side to victo ry by seven wickets. On Saturday Clitheroe are at home

to Great Harwood, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

Sub-pro can’t save Read

READ failed to make the most of the good weather at the weekend with dou ble defeat despite the pleasant surprises served up by first class sub-professional Hanif Ur Rehman. The Pakistan off-spin bowler and

batsman put in a superb stint against Cherry Tree on Saturday with 4-32 and picked up the bat to score 62 against Whailey on Sunday. And had three dubious decisions

against Cherry Tree on Saturday gone for the team, the paid man would have certainly gifted the side victory on his debut. Captain Will Driver won the toss

and elected to take up the bat alongside Joe Marshall (22). Unfortunately the skipper was first go for just four, caught and bowled by Jon Baldwin at 14-1. There was no question about this

dismissal, but leg before calls on next man in Rehman (22), and later Michael Whailey (0), off the bowling of Andreas Sudnik, did not go down well with the Read crowd. However Chris Holt (25) and Kyle

O'Connor (22) both managed double figures, despite Sudnik going on to col lect 6-21. Baldwin finished with 2-36 and professional Zahoor Elahi scooped last man Frank Barden (0). The middle order proved to be the problem, as it proved again on Sunday, as the side collapsed from 91-4 to 118 all out. In reply Read had Cherry Tree

under a degree of control with only Elahi scoring anything much of note with his 62 not out.

This, and the fact that after umpir

ing decision was wide of the mark, cost the side victory as only Mark Hadfield (12) and Joe Bolton (16) scored double figures. It was the contentious eighth wicket

of Sudnik that caused friction as the team and ground clearly heard the ball nick the bat before David Swarbrick had the ball caught behind only to go unnoticed by the umpire. Cherry Tree had needed 20 runs to

win at this point and thanks to the reprieve, Sudnik finished alongside Elahi on 11 not out to record a three wicket victory. On Saturday Read are away at Set tle, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

Wanderers beaten twice

RIBBLESDALE Wanderers were on the wrong end of two defeats over the weekend against Edenfield and Oswaldtwistle Immanuel. Saturday brought an 11-run defeat

away at Gincroft Lane, and then back at Church Meadow, Oswaldtwistle Immanuel won by seven wickets on Sunday. Edenfield were skittled for 172 but

Ribblesdale fell short of the mark as they were bowled all out for 161. Sunday's game saw Joe Scuderi top

score with 28 runs with other double figures coming from Craig Hall (24), Ryan Gladwin (14) and M. Clarkson (16) as Gerard Metcalf got to grips with the order. The Oswaldtwistle bowler took 6-29

with the support of two wickets apiece for professional Ahmer Saeed (2-38) and Imran Abid (2-9) as Ribblesdale were all out for 109. In reply the Church Meadow locals

threw everything they had at their vis itors with seven bowlers taking on at least four overs, but it proved to no avail.

Saeed and Anthony Dignan were not

for moving until over half their target had been attained. David Howard, Scuderi, Terry Braithwaite and Barry Spencer all tried without success before John Braithwaite dismissed Dignan for 26 at 64-1 However, Saeed (54) continued with

Daniel Hothersall (14) and then Daniel Metcalf (5 not out) before Stephen Kerr had him caught and bowled for his second wicket at 104-3 having seen the paid man make his half century. But with just five runs needed for

victory, Imran Abid came in and off six balls he struck the winning boundary. On Saturday Wanderers are down

for a trip to Barnoldswick, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

Dog hit eight!

DOG INN began their pre-season campaign with a convincing win over Forts Arms at Moorhead School. Debutant Tom Bartlett gave them

a third-minute lead, but the Second Division side fought back to take a shock lead with two in five minutes. Bartlett's second, a diving header

from close range, brought things level before Darren Fothergill's deflected shot rounded off a flowing Dog move. Jamie Enefer then tapped home

from close range to ensure a 4-2 inter val lead. Dog stepped up a gear after the

break, with Liam Porter's point-blank finish followed by a stunning Enefer free-kick. The hugely impressive Bartlett then scored twice more to complete an impressive four-goal debut salvo, with Enefer completing his hat-trick with a deft header.

■ RIBBLE Valley District Under 15s Cricket team have reached the semi finals of the

Lancashire District Competi tion thanks to an eight-wick

et win at Lancaster. Lancaster went from 61 -1,

to 61-4 inside three overs. Ribblesdale Wanderers'

Andy Hutchins came back into the attack and struck immediately as Clitheroe's Jack Dewhurst took two catches at mid-wicket - the second a remarkable one- handed overhead diving catch. . Andy Laycock continued to

bowl brilliantly and snapped up another wicket thanks to an excellent catch by Gary Knight Clarkson took a second

wicket, having also attained the first of the game, and Lancaster eventually finished their innings on 118-9. Laycock finished with fig

ures of 2-12 off 11 overs, Clarkson 3-15 off nine and Hutchins 3-30 off nine and Knight had three victims, a run out and didn't concede a bye. In reply the Valley had a

shaky start. Ribblesdale's Joe Hopkins went early for four and Laycock made a brisk 14 before Dewhurst and Read's Sam Marsh came together. Lancaster made the mis

take of dropping a straight forward catch off Dewhurst and the pair took control of the game. Good running followed

between the wickets and some fine boundaries were seem from both players as they past the winning with eight wickets to spare. Dewhurst finished on 56

not out and Marsh on 36 not out

Meanwhile, Clitheroe

Cobras Under 15s maintained their winning streak at home to Baxenden with a 20-run victory. Batting first the side

amassed an impressive 143- 6 in 20 overs. Dewhurst and Geelan got

the locals off to a good start until the latter fell for eight. Dewhurst was joined by

McKenna and the former took a liking to the bowling and had to retire on 33. Stinson carried on in his

place and scoring a quick 26 with some lovely cover drives, while McKenna made 30 runs of his own before he too retired Gallagher finished with an

impressive 14 not out at the end and was ably supported by Walsh with eight In reply Baxenden lost two

early wickets to some fine bowling by Stinson. Kilkenny continued his rich

vein of form by taking 1-6 in four overs and there were wickets too for Robinson and Ruddock as well as a fine keeping display by Wright that all contributed to a com fortable victory.

Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 47

GOLFERS from across the region shared the spoils in Clitheroe’s Sir Michael Bon- nallack open seniors event. But K. Duncan (Leyland)

took the cut glass replica of the Open claret jug home with him with a nett 68. Pleasington’s B. Goodwin

missed out by one shot but claimed second prize by the same margin from J. Kidd (Ringway). Pleasington captain

Michael Dunn returned an impressive nett 71 to capture the Under 60s prize and ever green Don Partington was the only competitor from the home club to win a prize when his nett 73 took top spot in the Over 70s category Clitheroe members fared

much better in the annual Open Fourball. A four-way tie on 43 points

was resolved by scrutiny of cards and Clitheroe’s Archie Moro and Peter Harrison were delighted to find their better back nine put them in first place. A birdie at the tricky Nth

was not enough to elevate Heyrose members P. Hulse and J. Pearson above third place as they were pipped by homesters Daniel Preedy and James Andrew. Tony Bridge imported his

buddy Ian Wrathall from Burnley and they finished fourth, lone shot clear of cap tain elect Andrew Wamsley and Accrington’s Ian Ready. Chris Vines and John

Whowell are both enjoying a profitable season and so it was no surprise when they went head to head for the Seniors’ Club Championship. Both returned 79s but the

former got the nod after a card play-off. Chris Eddlestone shot an

impressive nett 71 in the Seniors Rosebowl, but John Ashurst snatched the trophy from him with the same score and a better back nine. Eddie White was two shots

away in third and Geoff Sut cliffe added to his prize fund by claiming the Under 60s prize. Douglas Woodburn, John Pawson and Roy Wood topped the other categories. Young Jack Rothwell is in

sparkling form and his nett 67 in the Midweek Medal gave him top spot and another handicap reduction. Rob Andrew’s 72-3-69

would have been good enough on most occasions, but he had to settle for second place ahead of Simon Swindells. Dennis Underwood jnr

took Division Two with a nett 72 after cards with Mal colm Goldsworthy, Peter Boddie was two shots away with a nett 74 and Mark Ash worth’s 73 was good enough for the gross prize. Whailey member Dave

Wetton had two consecutive wins in recent Open competi tions. Starting with the Whailey

Open Fourball, and part nered by John Berry from Mytton Fold, their score of 43 points was good enough to take the top spot after a card play-off with Trevor Thom- ber (Whailey) and Bob Scott (Mytton Fold). Whalley's Steven Brown

and Andy Palmer were in third place with 42 points. On the following day he

was partnered by Trevor Thornber who, having reached the requisite age, was playing his first seniors event. Their score of 44 points

took first prize in the Whailey Seniors Open. Second, with 42 points,

were Steve Askey and Andrew Danley with Ian Hartley and Nick Williamson in third place with 41 points. Following recent victories

by both his father and moth er, it was finally Andrew Har vey's turn to mount the vic tor's rostrum. Playing with a new set of

clubs, a new putter and with Gary Clough from Great Harwood, their score of 43 points was just enough to win the second invitation of the year. Steve Shoreman and

Simon Pilbin (Mytton Fold) were in second place with 42 points. A card play-off decided the

final nett prizes; Martin Foulds and Mike Sherrin (Leeds) with 39 points edging John Heap and Chris Hugh es (Mytton Fold) into fourth place. With a certain degree of

inevitability, Roger Altham and Martin Cane (Clitheroe) took the gross prize with a 73. Stuart Herd, who will be

representing Whailey in the English Golf Union Gold Medal finals at Woodhall Spa later this month, took first prize in the Sunday medal with an excellent 83-1667 from Mel Earle (80-872). Away from Whailey, club

president Chris Davies and Roger Altham were invited to play in the Rochdale Golf Club Invitation Mixed Texas Scramble. And Ann Prior and Irish

Sherry finished second in the ELGA Scott Leggatt finals played at Haydock Park Golf Club. After the washout and can

cellation of the previous week’s Captain’s Day at Stonyhurst Park, members successfuly contested a four- man team event sponsored by Paul McEvoy of Clitheroe Golf Club. In glorious sunshine the

winners, John Buxbaum, Ray Robinson, Richard Moody and Chris Thomas, carded 103 points. Second place, with 97

points were Steve Clash, Gra ham Monk, Steven Young and Mike Kerrigan. Partnered by Chris's wife

Celia and Lancashire Ladies Golf Union Treasurer Brenda Flett, their score of 66-5.6- 60.4 saw them claim first place by 0.2 shots. Lauraine Wall (98-24-74)

won the Christine Stokes Pendant at Clitheroe and also claimed Bronze Division hon ours ahead of Marion Read (101-35-76). Silver Division prizes went to Sarah Walton (81-3-78) and Deborah Cat- low (94-16-78). Thelatest junior stableford

at Clitheroe saw victory for James Taylor (36) by four shots from William Kenyon.
