drive-inspired output now available from the pokier engine. This Prodrive Performance Pack


makes quite a difference too. Not only is power up by 40PS, but torque has been improved by a staggering 74 lb ft to 310 lb ft. The result is a 0-60 m.p.h. time


reduced from 5.9 to 5.3 seconds and a 0-100 m.p.h. time of 13.9 instead of 14.4 seconds. Mid-range response is also substantially improved. The Impreza GB270 comes well


equipped, too, offering around £7,600 in extra equipment on the saloon ver­ sion and just under £7,000 for the Sports Wagon five-door variant. Both models cost £22,995 on-the-


road - that is £2,898 or £1,898 more than the standard Impreza WRX saloon and Sports Wagon models respectively. Numbers will be strictly limited to 300 for the Impreza GB270 saloon and 100 for the Sports Wagon. Shared features for both body styles

of - but what of the Impreza WRX itself? Well, the change to the 2.5-litre power plant is relatively recent, intro­ duced for the ’06 model year. This brought far more useable power low down in the rev-range, just where you need it for everyday driving. The downside of the engine change


was that CO2 emissions suffered, and with them the car’s BIK tax banding (which jumped from 30% to 35%). Fuel consumption also slipped, from more than 30 m.p.g. to 27.4 m.p.g.


As befits true driving enthusiasts,


the engineers at Subaru have spent most effort fine tuning the engine, sus­ pension, bodyshell and steering. As with so many “evolutionary models” , this generation Impreza range emerges as a better car, although perhaps not quite so exciting as the original first generation model. It certainly feels a more mature proposition. The exterior is distinctive, especially


in GB270 guise, and although the sin­ gle nostril front grille brings to mind some coke-ravaged Z-list celeb, it com­ bines well with the “hawk-eye” head­ lights, to give the Impreza a more aggressive personality than ever before. Subaru seems to have jumped onto


the clear lensed tail lights bandwagon just as most other manufacturers have jumped off and they do not do a lot to lift the impression of overall quality. Despite its many facelifts and revi­


sions, the Impreza never feels like a thoroughly modern car. The doors dang shut, the trim feels cheap and hard in almost every area and the seat­ ing position is far from ideal. Occupant safety has also been


boosted in recent times with the fit­ ment of anti-raindrop door mirrorsm which stay cleaner longer, thus enhancing visibility. The Impreza also takes a cue from

the Forester, featuring active front head-restraints which reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. The brake pedal is energy-absorbing, being designed to snap away under severe impact, pro­ tecting the driver’s lower limbs. In the rear seat are two ISOFIX-compatible child seat mountings. Subaru has had to think long and


hard about the positioning of the Impreza 2.5 WRX, and with these final GB270 variants, appears to have pitched for the position of best rally replica around. In going head to head with cheaper


versions of Mitsubishi’s Evo, the WRX model has a tough task on its hands, but many will be seduced by the more characterful engine, the more evocative rally heritage of Burns and McRae.


’ ES.it is a bit dull, but you will soon forget


that when you sample the Toyota Verso’s other qualities. It is well built, neat­


ly packaged, has a versatile seating sys­ tem and is offered with couple of partic­ ularly strong diesel engines. Factor in Toyota’s reputation for reliability and the Verso’s case to com­ pact MPV buyers is a compelling one. Toyota presents


buyers with a choice of two W T - i petrol engines generating 109 b.h.p. and 127 b.h.p. from their respective 1.6 and 1.8- litre capacities. These modest power-outputs are produced at a lofty 6.000 r.p.m., so both engines need to be worked quite hard in order to extract mean­ ingful performance. They are adequate


for short trips around town, but if you can afford them, the diesels are a better bet. Both oil-burners are


2.2-litre D4-D unit, and in each instance Toyota has been slightly disingenuous in terms of its naming culture. The D-4D 140 actually produces 134 b.h.p. and the D- 4D 180 engine found exclusively in the range-topping T180 model actually has 175 b.h.p. on tap. The two oil-burners


are predictably strong on torque, serving up 310Nm and 400Nm respectively from just 2.000 r.p.m. On paper, perform­

has a lot in common with that of other mainstream Toyota products in that it is neat and unfussy rather than extrovert in any way. Unlike some simi­


larly-sized rivals, the Verso can seat seven and all five rear seats fold down into the floor to create a total­ ly flat loading surface.


This means that you will not need to haul heavy seats into and out of the car if ulti­ mate carrying capaci­ ty is required. A lot of thought has gone into this system, the seats not only being the lightest in class hut also requiring a simple one-touch operation to fold each one flat. Prices start from
